Airline adding direct service between Boston, Shanghai
19 February 2015
Excerpt

BOSTON (AP) A Chinese airline plans to offer the first nonstop service between Boston and Shanghai.

Hainan Airlines and Gov. Charlie Baker made the announcement Wednesday at the Massachusetts Statehouse.

Hainan says it will offer three roundtrip flights per week between Boston and Shanghai starting in June on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The flights will begin exactly one year after the airline launched the first nonstop service between Boston and China, beginning with four weekly flights between Logan International Airport and Beijing. That will expand to daily service in May.

China Southern boosts flights to NZ
19 February 2015
The New Zealand Herald Excerpt

China Southern Airlines will move to year-round, double daily services between Auckland-Guangzhou from August using a Boeing 787-Dreamliner.

The move builds on the summer peak season double-daily service on the “Canton route” and could be worth close to $100 million for the New Zealand economy.

It will lift the year-round flights from 10 to 14 a week, which, according to the airline, was in response to high demand from Chinese tourists.

“We have great confidence in the Auckland-Guangzhou route due to the high level of tourism demand between China and New Zealand,” said Mike Ma, China Southern Airlines’ general manager New Zealand.

The airline began flying the Guangzhou to Auckland route in April 2011, with three services a week.

“We have seen strong returns on our investment in the New Zealand market,” Ma said.

Norris Carter, Auckland Airport’s general manager aeronautical commercial, said the latest increase in services will add 95,000 seats on the Auckland to Guangzhou route.

China's air traffic up during Spring Festival holiday
Excerpt

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's airlines operated over 60,000 flights during the week-long Spring Festival holiday travel season, up 7.8 percent from last year, according to an article posted on the official website of the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday.

Airlines in China carried more than 1.35 million passengers each on Feb.23 and Feb. 24, hitting an all-time daily high during the Spring Festival travel season.

Chinese passengers made 8.25 million trips by air during the week-long holiday, up 7.3 percent year on year, the article said, quoting data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The number is about 85 percent of railway trips nationwide during the Spring Festival holiday travel season. Traffic authorities estimated Tuesday that about 9.7 million trips were made by train during the holiday.

Back in 2008, air passenger traffic was only about one-ninth of railway passenger traffic during the Spring Festival travel season, but today more Chinese people can afford air travel.

According to data provided by the Beijing Capital International Airport, some 1.6 million passengers traveled via the airport during the seven-day holiday, up 7.14 percent from the previous year.

Singing protesters decry flight route
Lawyer Lai Chung-chiang said that civilian flight routes in China are congested because a lot of its airspace is restricted to use by the Chinese military
5 March 2015
Taipei Times Excerpt

More than 100 demonstrators yesterday sang in unison outside the Taipei office of China Southern Airlines to express their opposition to controversial flight routes proposed by Beijing.

Headed by a coalition of social advocacy organizations and pro-independence groups, the protesters demanded that China cancel its plans for flight route M503, which runs close to the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

They said that the proposed route reflected Chinas ambitions to encroach on Taiwanese airspace and posed a threat to national security.

The groups accused President Ma Ying-jeous administration of failing to stand its ground in negotiations with Beijing.

While China originally planned for the new route to take effect today, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) on Monday said that China has agreed to postpone use of the route.

The CAA also cited an agreement with China that the proposed route would be moved 6 nautical miles (11km) west of its original location.

Blacklist of unruly air passengers planned
5 March 2015
Shanghai Daily Excerpt

CHINA Eastern Airlines has joined other national carriers in appealing to the nations civil aviation regulator to establish a blacklist of misbehaving passengers as soon as possible, a senior official with the airline said yesterday.

Those on the blacklist will not be issued flight tickets by the carriers. The list was necessary to deter those breaking the civil aviation regulation, said Ma Xulun, general manager of Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines, also a national legislator.

Ma made the plea following a series of incidents involving airborne Chinese passengers in recent months. In one case, a passenger opened the emergency exit doors of a plane because of a flight delay, while another made hoax bomb calls which forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

Air China, Air New Zealand aim for Beijing-Auckland service this year
Excerpt

WELLINGTON, Mar. 23 (Xinhua) -- The flag carriers of New Zealand and China on Monday detailed plans for an alliance that would reinstate direct flights between Auckland and Beijing by the end of the year.

The alliance, subject to regulatory approvals, would see Air China introduce a daily direct service between the two cities, while continuing to codeshare on Air New Zealand's daily Shanghai-Auckland service.

The airlines said in a joint statement that they aimed to almost double their capacity between China and New Zealand while delivering greater frequency and network connections.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon said the alliance would see two home carriers with complementary strengths at each end of the route working together to drive traffic in both directions.

"By connecting the Chinese capital with New Zealand again we would provide tourists and business travelers with unparalleled air connectivity between and within each home market," Luxon said in a statement.

Air China Chief Executive Officer Song Zhiyong said the relationship between China and New Zealand was entering into a new phase with significant achievements already made in economic development, as well as cultural and political exchanges in recent years.

Air China's Profit Rose 14% in 2014
26 March 2015
Dow Jones Excerpt

HONG KONG--Chinese flag carrier Air China Ltd. kicked off earnings reports for Chinese airlines with a 14% rise in 2014 profit, as strong growth in outbound travel demand and lower fuel prices more than offset foreign exchange losses during the year.

The Beijing-based carrier said net profit for the 12 months ended Dec 31 was 3.78 billion yuan ($608 million), according to Chinese accounting standards, up from a net profit of 3.32 billion yuan. The result was higher than the average 3.22 billion yuan forecast by nine analysts in a poll by Thomson Reuters.

The carrier's revenue rose 7.4% to 104.83 billion yuan from 97.63 billion yuan on higher air-traffic volume during the year, it said.

Air China's stronger-than-expected results come on the back of the nation's resilient demand for air travel despite a weaker Chinese currency.

Hainan Airlines to buy 30 Boeing Dreamliners
26 March 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Hainan Airlines, the mainland’s fourth-largest carrier, yesterday posted a net profit increase of 20 per cent for 2014 and said it will buy 30 next-generation Boeing 787 planes for up to US$7.7 billion.

The airline, which was operating 169 aircraft at the end of last year, posted net profit of 2.59 billion yuan (HK$3.27 billion) on a 14 per cent traffic increase. Passenger load factor grew by 1 percentage point to 86.8 per cent. Revenue from core business rose 4.7 per cent to 32.4 billion yuan, with an 11.92 per cent growth in business outside mainland China.

The company said in a separate notice to the Shanghai stock exchange that it planned to order 30 B787-9 aircraft from Boeing, with a catalogue price of US$257 million each. The plane, known as the Dreamliner, is Boeing’s new fuel-efficient long-range aircraft that seats 280 passengers. The order is expected to have a volume discount and will be for delivery before 2021.

Fuel, which halved in a global oil price plunge in the second half, accounted for 39.11 per cent of Hainan Airlines’ operating costs last year. Fuel price fluctuation, currency, and competition from the high-speed rail network are among the biggest risks for its operations in 2015, the firm said.

China Eastern airline says profit up 44 percent
28 March 2015
AFP Excerpt

Chinese airline China Eastern said its net profit rose 44 percent in 2014 from a year earlier, as fuel costs fell and passenger numbers increased.

Net profit at the Shanghai based firm was 3.4 billion yuan ($548 million) last year, it said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange on Friday.

"This result was also primarily due to the continuous improvement of the Group's operating abilities and the decrease of jet fuel prices, as well as adjustments to the retirement benefit policies of our employees," China Eastern said.

The number of passengers travelling with the airline rose about six percent to reach nearly 84 million, it added.

When I flew China Eastern A330 PEK-XIY, I noticed that 1), the flight was barely pushing 600km/h and 2), it was flying at a relatively low altitude. I thought this was odd, until I flew Hainan Airlines back and noticed the same thing. Is there any reason for this?
