The sport is entertaining to watch but a bit scary when you are the one taking part. |

Mrisho Ngassa the only trialist to play vs. Manchester United
Posted by Joshua Mayers There were a handful of new faces at Sounders FC training today, including Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe, who plays collegiately at UCLA. With Wednesday's friendly looming, I asked coach Sigi Schmid if any non-contract players might get some action against Manchester United. "The only trialist that we're looking at playing is (Mrisho) Ngassa," he said. "We haven't had a chance to see him yet on a real big field because just of our training schedule and the amount of games that we've had. We haven't done a lot of big-field stuff in between, so it will be good to see him on a big field." Ngassa is a 22-year-old speedy wing player from Tanzania. He was brought to the Sounders in an effort to strengthen the team's relationship with clubs in East Africa. "It's a loose affiliation at this point, although we are trying to put something more structured in place," said general manager Adrian Hanauer last week. "It's a relationship that has evolved over the last five years or so. We believe that there is some opportunity in East Africa. We would like to create a link, a pipeline. We are planning to do so with a team called African Lyon in Dar es Salaam. Ngassa happens to come from a different team called Azam, which were willing to work with African Lyon and ourselves in bringing him out for a trial. We are excited about the relationship. We've got work to do to make it more robust, but it's something we think could pay dividends down the line -- two years, three years, five years, 10 years |

Nizar Shines Against Man City
TAIFA Stars midfielder Nizar Khalfan was among outstanding performers as Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered a 2-1 defeat to English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester City in a pre season friendly match in Canada on Monday evening. Khalfan, who joined the Canadian side some two seasons ago, was introduced in the 45th minute and he nearly produced a second goal for his side barely three minutes from introduction. From Wes Knight's throw-in on the right, Nizar Khalfan's byline cross found Long Tan at the near post, but the Chinese striker was unable to steer his shot on target. Tan was also gifted another great chance just after the hour mark, as he latched on to a wayward clearance by City's second-half goalkeeper Stuart Taylor before drilling a shot just wide. Roberto Mancini's men needed a late goal through Shaun Wright-Phillips to secure the win, while Yaya Toure picked up an injury during the game. Camilo Sanvezzo had earlier stunned the Premier League side with a shock opener for the Whitecaps - a new MLS franchise this season - before youngster John Guidetti drew City level on 68 minutes. But victory came at a cost for the Premier League club after influential midfielder Yaya Toure hobbled off during the first half with an apparent knee injury. As promised, City boss Roberto Mancini named a strong side for the match, which was given the go-ahead despite heavy rain in the area which had led to the postponement of the Whitecaps' MLS match against Real Salt Lake at the weekend. The rain had abated by the time Mancini inspected the pitch and gave his consent for the match to be played but the temporary grass playing surface - laid at City's request - was nevertheless heavy. The federation's Information Officer, Boniface Wambura, said the league's loan move procedures stipulates clearly that there must be a written agreement, which has been approved by the player's club, the club that will receive the particular player on loan and the player before the confirmation of the move. Wambura's clarification came in the wake of the recent saga involving three players of the Mainland soccer giants, Simba, who objected to their loan move to other top flight teams. He said the written agreement is crucial to the loan move as the process will be difficult to be put into effect if any of the three parties has not been involved in it. "Players should carefully examine the contracts they have signed with their clubs to see whether they have a clause recommending loan move and the move's procedures will then be followed should the clause," he said. After the match, Mancini was full of praise for Whitecaps FC. "I congratulate their manager because they played very well in both halves and did a very good job," the Italian told reporters. "It was fantastic, the crowd was fantastic, the people and stadium were incredible. It shows Vancouver can have an important future in soccer. They need to improve, but this is only the first year they are playing in MLS. " City go on to play David Beckham's LA Galaxy next week hoping to make it three wins from three World Football Challenge games, but of more immediate concern to Mancini will be the fitness of Toure. Meanwhile, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has insisted that any loan move for Mainland Premier League teams' players must be sealed after written agreement involving the concerned parties.
