Mwalala: Why Kenyans like the Tanzanian league

Immediate former Al-Khaboora (Oman) striker Bernard Mwalala has given reason as to why Kenyan players and others from Africa love to grace the Tanzanian Vodacom sponsored league.

The former international who has been out of international limelight in recent times, has stated the uniqueness of Tanzania makes is a great attraction for many players.

handsome sign on fees

- Foreign players live very well in Tanzania. Even once they stop playing football, it is easy to venture into business in Tanzania, said Mwalala in a one on one with mwanaspoti.co.tz

- Passion for football is very high in Tanzania and fans hold foreign players in very high regard. The pay – salaries and incentives are also very attractive, added Mwalala who has played club football in Kenya, Uganda, Malaysia, Tanzania and Oman.

The Tanzanian league for several years now has been a great attraction to many Kenyan players due to the higher pay as well as handsome sign on fees.

the recent past

In 2008, two Kenyan players were paid US $ 15,000, to sign up for Young Africans (Yanga) and the figures have become better over time.

Currently, Jerry Santo and Hillary Echesa turn out for Simba Sports Club while defender Ibrahim Shikanda is at Azam FC.

In the recent past several other Kenyan players; Maurice Sunguti, Francis Ouma, Hassan Aden, Joseph Ruto, John Baraza, George Owino, Mike Baraza, Osborne Monday, Crispin Odula amongst many others have turned out for a club or more in the Tanzanian league.

Abductions, domitable lions, a derby

By Gary Al-Smith
(Archive)
This week's Africa Report visits the fabled Dar es Salaam derby played out in Tanzania on Wednesday night, as well the unfortunate abduction of the father of John Mikel Obi. And also, could the real reason Alex Song stamped Joey Barton be found back home?

The Mikel situation

John Obi Mikel: Was advised to stay in England as elder brother Emeka tries his best to handle the affair of their father's kidnapping
By now, the workers manning the phones at the offices of God's Time Transport Company are nerve-wracked. They have referred more calls to their bosses for handling in the past six days than at any other time they can remember. Last Friday, 'Oga Mike' did not report to work in the morning. Later, they heard in the media that he could not be found.

Everyone at the company has always known that Michael Obi Snr is a ripe target for kidnappers, considering who he is, but unlike a lot of parents of famous African footballers, the father of Chelsea star Mikel is unassuming. Obi Snr could have chosen not to work, considering the successes of his superstar son. Yet he has regular 9-to-5 working hours like everyone else, sometimes staying late to make sure everything is being efficiently run. Like he always tells his workers and anyone who would listen, he has not forgotten his humble beginnings.

Obi Snr played for local side Gombe XI in an era when megabucks did not line footballers' accounts. He had hoped to gain some recognition and at least make it into the national team. In the late 1960s, Jos state, where the Obi family has always lived, was embroiled in the Nigerian civil war that saw society grind to a halt. His football ambitions stopped there, and he turned to trading like so many of his peers. Eventually he became a tyre repairer and took care of his football-mad sons. The Chelsea star was born John Michael Obi Jnr but his name changed along the line, like so many footballers, during his ascent to the top.

Ever since the Obi family moved from the Apata area to the more affluent Rayfield suburb, security precautions had been stepped up, but the kidnappers had still outsmarted their victim. Mikel's plea on Monday was broadcast worldwide - "My father is just an old man" - but at home, he has delegated his mother and elder brother, Emeka, to handle things as he's been advised to stay in London. Emeka is a goalkeeper for Nigerian Premier League side Enugu Rangers and, although seemingly forgotten in all this because of his younger sibling's global status, he's suffering similarly.

It seems that when Oscar Wilde said "we're all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars", the kidnappers of Mikel's father had a different interpretation. The kidnappers have contacted the family and have now made a "sizeable demand", according to Mikel's agents. Here's hoping he's found hale and hearty. And soon, for the sake of all involved.

"Our FA did what?"
Egypt said no to Brazil. Really, they did. The country was scheduled to play the Selecao on September 6 in Cairo - news that had whipped the Masr media into frenzy. The last time the two nations met, Egypt played some delectable attacking football but lost 4-3. That was in the Confederations Cup. Anticipation turned to anger and disappointment as the Egyptian FA announced that the date would not be favourable for the Pharaohs and decided not to go ahead with the match.

Following Brazil's 3-2 friendly defeat by Germany, the CBF announced that it had rescheduled friendlies against Italy and Spain slated for this year to 2012, instead choosing Egypt, Costa Rica and Gabon for later in the year. The move was widely believed to have been taken to boost morale for the South Americans, having fared poorly under Mano Menezes so far. Egypt, who are virtually out of the 2012 African Nations Cup qualifiers, will play Sierra Leone away, either on September 2, 3 or 4, before hosting Niger in the final group game nearly a month later.

Ahmed Shobeir, the former football turned pundit, was not kind in his assessment of the authorities' decision. Shobeir was interviewed on the Shabab Wal Riada (Youth and Sports) station and said: "How can EFA turn down such a valuable game with the silly excuse that the Egyptian team has a game against Sierra Leone? Don't they realise that playing Brazil at this difficult time could boost tourism in the country?"

The federation defended the postponement, with president Zaher insistent that a qualifier must always take precedence over a friendly: "We have official international games at around the proposed date, which is why the EFA has turned down the proposed date and asked the Brazilians to choose another one."

Instead, the Brazilians chose another team. On Tuesday, they contacted Ghana and asked the West Africans if they were interested in a friendly. The four-time African champions grabbed it and secured the date: on Wednesday morning, both FAs announced that they'll be playing in London on September 5. The backlash in Egypt has not been pretty.

Cameroon's cracks

GettyImages
Alex Song: Eye off the ball as a result of a legal matter?
The Indomitable Lions look anything but that these days. There is restlessness and instability everywhere you look. Ahead of crucial African Nations Cup qualifiers in the coming weeks, the structure underpinning Cameroon's national team looks shaky. In the past week, the country's Under-20 team were knocked out of the ongoing World Youth Championships in Colombia. Their delegation was packed and ready to leave the Hotel de Pereira when they were informed that lodging bills had not been sorted.

The Cameroon federation had not wired in money to the hotel as previously agreed. After the team was held back for a few hours, the team manager, Junior Binyam, paid the outstanding €1,700 himself. The incident summed up preparations for this tournament as coach Martin Ndtoungou Mpille pointed out: "All our preparations were not up to scratch. Even though this is a junior competition, it is still a World Cup."

Elsewhere, Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has had a pretty bad past month. His season did not start well at the weekend when he stamped on Joey Barton in the Premier League opener. The subsequent three-match ban would see him miss some crucial ties for his club. But why did he look so off-form and antsy in that game? Theories were quickly formulated back home in Cameroon that his distracted play had everything to do his court case.

As I write, Song's lawyers will be representing him in a Cameroonian court in a case involving the alleged assault of some students in June. The students claimed when they sought the player's autograph at a popular hangout in Douala, he reacted angrily and struck one of them, who "ended up in a drain". If Song is found guilty, he could be jailed for two years.

After this case is done, Song's lawyers will then grapple with a separate appeal for a fine imposed by the FA against their client last month. Song was fined $2,000 by FECAFOOT after he was found guilty of not greeting Samuel Eto'o in the build-up to their qualifier against Senegal. All these troubles considered, it is hardly surprising that Cameroon are currently third in their qualifying group, five points behind leaders Senegal and two behind DR Congo.

Derby in Tanzania

It is not only England that loves to apply the cliché 'curtain raiser' to the Community Shield. There are several equivalents in Africa. Late Wednesday night saw a huge game played out in Dar es Salaam. It was the Charity Shield, an annual contest played ostensibly so a large portion of the proceeds can be donated to the needy. Everyone knows it's just a chance to get cash for the football clubs.

The 60,000-seater national stadium was filled before kick-off and, as has been the norm before big games since it was finished in 2007, the $53 million dollar Chinese-built facility saw the country's president in attendance. His presence was viewed with suspicion by one set of fans. The two competing teams were Yanga and Simba, the biggest teams in Tanzania. Although never substantiated, Jakaya Kikwete, and the ruling CCM party, is rumoured to be pro-Yanga.

This would be the fourth time the two have met this year - twice in the Premier League and once in the Kagame Cup East African Cup final before this encounter. Funny preparation always characterises a meeting between these two old foes, who have won 35 league titles between them. Known as the 'Dar es Salaam Derby', this game sees both sides train at different venues from the usual. They take different routes to the stadium in a game of cat-and-mouse. The outcome is usually the same: feisty and passionate. Added to that, Tanzania Breweries Limited threw in 5 billion Tanzanian shillings ($3 million) only last week. The temperature of this game changed considerably after that.

The game kicked off at 8pm local time with a pan-African flavour. Simba fielded two Ugandans and a Kenyan. Yanga started a Zambian, a Ghanaian and a Ugandan. Simba, smarting from losing this year's league by one goal after finishing level on points, raced into a two-goal lead which crushed the morale of their rivals. Simba's Haruna Moshi, known as Boban for his combative style, ran the show and continued his great form. The game ended 2-0.

Tanzanian Lady Golfers Retain Regional Trophy

Tanzanian lady golfer and team captain Madina Iddi powered four over par 76 as Tanzania completed a sublime performance to retain the second edition East and Central Regional All Africa Challenge Trophy, 31 strokes clear at the TPDF Lugalo Golf Club.

The three-day event also saw second placed Zambia stamp on her second position after scoring a collective 750 with Kenya beating Uganda for third position at a poor 813 and 819 respectively.

The tournament attracted only winners to compete for regional supremacy with the visiting teams going all out to unseat host and defending champions from the driver’s seat, ahead of the more superior continental championship.

Tanzania won the first season 20 points clear at the Kampala’s hilly Kitante Golf Course, thanks to the clinical Madina, and it was interesting to see the fire instigated youthful team going full throttle to keep the trophy at home for the second season in a row.

The evergreen Madina was the power behind the team’s success particularly on final Day 3, when she returned 76 strokes, the best score of the tournament and in the process crowned top scorer in the individual leader-board.

And, to add sugar to a cup full of honey, towering compatriot Ayne Magombe improved her Day 2 score of 81, to return 79 on final day and ensure Tanzania’s score remained unassailable keeping visitors at bay through to the end.

Despite her scoring a slow footed 81 on final day, Angel Eaton made her own contribution through the event when she secured 77 strokes Day 2 to become one of the best scorers overall.

Madina said: “I am very happy… we are on top of the region. We must now focus on the continental championship slated for Zambia mid next year and hope to win the African Cup for the first time.

This should be our next commitment.” Meanwhile the Tanzania Ladies Open season 2011 tees off at the same venue tomorrow and men have been invited to cheer up the two-day networking event.

TLGU President Mbonile Burton said in a statement that all was set for the event that is expected to attract contestants from across the region.

She said: ”This is a competitive networking event where golfers rekindle new friendships in the spirit of a good swing. We hope men turn out in large numbers to support the development of women golf in the region.”

Cricket team sets sights on the title
Friday, 19 August 2011 11:46

By Epifania Magingo, The Citizen Correspondent
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania cricket team underlined its quest for the indoor cricket tournament title by thumping Australia by 138 runs yesterday.

Organised by Business Machines Limited (MTL), the tournament has brought together 12 teams.
Tanzania and Australia clashed in yesterday’s Super Six stage match after sparkling at the group stage of the tournament.

The top four teams in the Super Six stage will qualify for the semi-finals of the annual tournament opening later this week.

Most of the teams competing in the tournament use names of some of the world’s best cricket-playing nations. In yesterday’s match, Australia started to bat and collected 110 runs in 16 overs. They had to bat extremely carefully after losing wickets consecutively at times.

Sensing the danger of being outsmarted, the Tanzania bowlers worked hard and continued to terrorize Australia batsmen, who however did their best to add runs. After a tight battle in the opening minutes, Tanzania batsmen managed to score 148 runs and win the match.

Following their impressive performance in the preliminary and the Super Six stages, the Tanzania team is now one of the most feared teams in the tournament. The tournament also has the Slippery Six stage which involves teams that finished at the bottom three positions of groups A and B during the preliminary stages.

Three matches in the Slippery Six stage took place on Wednesday and saw New Zealand and Zimbabwe registering wins over Pakistan and India respectively. Another Slippery stage match between Bangladesh and England battled to end in a draw.

They are very rich in terms of assets ownership (e.g., Land, buildings etc). But they are not that organized, so it will be a bit difficult to get you their financial status.

Btw, they both have a tradition of hiring foreign coaches and signing foreign players...

Stars book Cranes date

DEFENDING Champions Kilimanjaro Stars set up a semi-final clash against Uganda Cranes in this year’s CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup after sending guest team Malawi spinning out of the competition with 1-0 win in the quarterfinal tie played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

After a quite mediocre performance in the group stages where they only qualified as one of the best losers, the pressure was on the champions and the Charles Boniface Mkwasa’s side had a lot to prove going into this quarterfinal clash.

And the holders, who have endured a torrid relationship with a section of home supporters due to their indifferent run of form, put on brave performance characterized with a resolute defending to book a semi-final berth thanks to a fantastic, first-half goal by Nurdin Bakari.

The versatile Young Africans’ midfielder picked up a Mrisho Ngasa pass just outside the edge of the box, cut inside and finished emphatically with his right foot to give the hosts a deserved lead in the 37th minute. The victory guaranteed Kilimanjaro Stars a place in Thursday’s semi-final when they will meet Uganda Cranes who also defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 in the preceding quarterfinal encounter at the same venue.

It will be a repeat of last year’s semi-final clash between the two sides, in which the Stars knocked out the Cranes with 5-4 in post-match penalty shoot-out. The Mainland’s outfit, then, beat guest side Ivory Coast 1-0 in the final match to lift the coveted regional trophy.

The Malawi side that has impressed under veteran Kinnah Phiri came to the match as favourites having finished top in Group C ahead of Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia, but the game that got off at a cracking pace, saw Kilimanjaro Stars dominating the early exchanges but without causing the Flames many problems. Kilimanjaro Stars created their first meaningful chance with 21 minutes on the clock.

Overlapping fullback right Shomari Kapombe curled an inviting cross inside Malawi box but the Flames custodian Charles Swini reacted swiftly to punch the ball to safety before it could reach on-rushing Ngasa. Soon afterwards, a poor clearance by Juma Nyoso presented Malawi with a great chance to break the deadlock.

The no-nonsense defender leaped to a long shot outside Kilimanjaro Stars’ area and miscued a header towards his own six-yard line, where it found a Malawi striker, however Juma Jabu responded promptly to clear the ball for a futile corner.

Stars’ best chance of the match came after the half hour mark when Ngasa’s cross from the right flank evaded Malawi’s defenders and goalkeeper to find Ramadhani Chombo who was lurking just outside the six-yard line but with the net gapping in front of him, the Stars midfielder unleashed a feeble shot that was cleared off the line by a Malawi defender.

Bakari, who was impressive for Stars yesterday, controlled Ngasa’s pass few yards from the edge of the area, beat his marker as he cut into the Flames box, and smashed a powerful diagonal low drive with the outside of his right boot to beat Swini to his right.

Malawi started the second period with more adventure and to their credit curved out some openings with Ndaziona Chatsalira, John Banda and Joseph Kamwendo all testing Kasseja as the Flames turned up the heat on Stars. Stars resorted to deep defending while launching occasional counter attacks using Ngasa and Hussein Javu.

In one of the moves Ngasa made a solo run from his own half, beating three players on the way into the box but was denied by fantastic piece of defending by Malawi’s James Sangala, who made a desperate interception as the Stars diminutive attacker was about to pull the trigger.

Uganda progressed into the semi-finals of the regional championship when they saw off invitees Zimbabwe 1-0 in the third quarter final that kicked-off at 2pm at the same venue. Hamis Kiiza, who features for Mainland champions, Young Africans scored the winner for the Cranes in the 15th minute from a well measured cross from Sula Matovu.

Tanzania/Congo-Kinshasa: Stars to Face DR Congo in FriendlyMajuto Omary
31 December 2011

The national soccer team, Taifa Stars, start their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers build up with a match against DR Congo on February 23 at the 60,000-seater National Stadium.

TFF information officer Boniface Wambura told reporters yesterday that they received a request from the DR Congo's FA and already initial arrangements were underway.

"DR Congo are among the formidable teams on the continent, they have some world-class players, so we agreed to play them in February, for we believe they will provide a perfect test for Stars," Wambura said.

Taifa Stars have a daunting task to down Mozambique's Black Mambas at the National Stadium on February 29 while DR Congo have a relatively easy qualifier against Mauritius in Port Louis.

Wambura said the Leopards would arrive in the country on February 18 with most of their overseas-based players.

DR Congo boast prolific players like Lomana Tresor Lualua, who plies his trade for England's Blackpool, Herita Ilunga of West Ham and Valenciennes' Christopher Mfuyi.

"It will be a great experience for our players ahead of the two legged Afcon assignment. If Taifa Stars win, it will be a morale booster," the soft-spoken TFF official said.
