Ropewalks

The Ropewalks area is mainly known today for its bars and clubs but actually owes its name to the rope-making industry that used to occupy many of its old factories. These factories used nearby Bold Street (page 2) to lay out rope from top to bottom - as this was the standard length needed for ships! The Ropewalks area includes many streets and these photos are taken from some of them . . .

Looks great! But why are the streets so empty?

There seems to be a pre-occupation on this forum with 'street-level scenes' - meaning pictures of crowds of people.

In most cities - there are certain areas in which large numbers of people congregate - but in other areas, 'human traffic' is not as heavy, or is dependent on time of day.

Personally, I sometimes like to avoid catching people in shots of buildings - as I imagine Mossy does too. ( The Rope Walks is, in large sections, an evening/night -time area - of bars, clubs and pubs.)

I was tempted to say how Victorian warehouses--highly functional in purpose--put contemporary offices and public buildings to shame. And, more often than not this seems to be the case--but not in the above. I love the mix of styles, old and new alike.

Its just i took these photos quite early in the day and not alot of people walk down these streets in the daytime because its home to mostly bars/clubs which are closed. Bold Street is nearby and most people walk down there because it has more shops and cafe's. I've got some more photos coming soon with lots more people

Yeah the new buildings in this area tend to be quite good quality and industrial looking - so to fit in with the warehouses. Most of the buildings complement each other and make an interesting place to walk around.

Ropewalks
Concert Square

This is the main square in the Ropewalks area and a very popular destination in the night time and whenever the sun comes out!

Coming soon . . Duke Street!

superb shots

Concert Square is not my favourite place, but Ropewalks itself is full of character, there are hardly any 20th Century buildings in the district.

Wow, that area looks amazing! Liverpool seems to be full of surprises. I'd love to head up there next time I'm in the UK over the Christmas period. Looks to have changed so much since 2004 which was when I was last there!

The Ropewalks area looks great. The last time I walked around it was about 12 years ago. Nice to see lots has happened since.

These are great photos! And yeah, I agree. People here on SSC are to concerned with "foot traffic" and the look of a busy street. Personally I avoid taking pictures of people because my interest lay in the actually buildings. But also, some people are alittle un-nerved by random people talking their picture.

Duke Street

Duke Street is one of the main streets in the Ropewalks area. It has quite a mix of architecture from georgian houses (both derelict and refurbished), old factories and new-builid apartments. Its hard to sum up this street with words so i'll get straight to the pictures . . . .

I love the photo of the ex-back-to-back houses off Duke Street. Beautifully preserved.
