SUDAN | Railways

I noticed there was no thread on Sudan and since I have a few questions regarding trains running there I started a new one.

Information on the web is quite scarce on what trains are running right now, according to the official webpage of Sudan Railways there are one daily over-night train between Khartoum-Atbara. It also mentions trains between Nyala and Ar Rahad running twice a month. It does not mention the service between Wadi Halfa and Khartoum. I also understood that there was a direct service between Khartoum and Nyala.

Does anyone out there have more information?

Nothing more up-to-date than you, I gather. I was there in 2007, and if I recall correctly there was a Khartoum - Port Sudan service as well. Did they cut that too? My guidbook mentioned that Sudan once boasted Africa's largest rail network... so sad :-(

At any rate, the huge run-down marshalling yards outside Port Sudan were an interesting sight to behold!

Oh, and isn't there a line from Juba to Djibouti or something? Granted, it's a different country now!

These images are borrowed from user Northern Sudanese who posted them in the Sudan forum. New DMUs bought (or given as payment for oil) from China to be be used on the Khartoum - Atbara line. I was quite surprised as it seemed that the whole system had collapsed. We'll see if these new trains can change anything.

User "Northern Sudanese" reports that the Al Nil train now runs twice daily between Khartoum North and Atbara.

Wikipedia has a map of the Sudanese rail network, something I feel is needed on the first page of threads here:

Never thought I'd see a Chinese DMU in Africa. Perhaps one day they will put some on the Tanzara line.

Does any one know if China took over on the track maintenance as well?

Ghana also has a couple of DMUs from CNR Tangshan shipped over around 2009 and running 2 services each way between Accra - Tema (about 30km away).

I doubt they're the only countries in Africa with Chinese DMUs - with the role China is playing in Angola, DRC, Ethiopia, etc there could well be some more multiple-units around.

Actually, there is no surprise - China have been agresevilly expanding to Africa for around last 5 years.

I guess the surprise is mostly about seeing newish trains there at all. With few notable exceptions countries there have no money to pay for them and very little rail infrastructure to use them on.
