Wow - this all are realy beautiful villages. I like it very much. - We have also some nice villages in Germany but nothing comparable to this. It is so beautiful!
You can see that some of the villages have problems with its population, I think many young people are leaving this villages, but they have to be preserved at all cost. Italy is so beautiful!

I think it's just a question of different features striking one's eye. What looks dull and routinary to me may look somehow 'exotic' to german eyes.
To me, villages retaining timbered houses, Giebelhaeuser and Zwiebeltoepfe are just fairy tale places. So northern.

Maybe the uneven orography of Italy also plays a role. Perched villages offer a nice view and fresh air, but living there is quite uncomfortable.

Sadly so.
Many of these villages have been turned into week-end or holidays venues, which helps preserving.
But there are thousands that are slowly dying, as ageing population, waning agriculture and the flight of young people is a real trouble.
And also when population is not shrinking, living in the historical core may be uneasy, as old houses don't fit contemporary way of life.
I think there's still a lot of preservation and revitalization to be done, and a huge real estate market to be stimulated and exploited.

Still in the end you will hardly find real "ghost villages".

#37 - Pacentro is a village of 1279 inhabitants of the L'Aquila province, Abruzzo

It is a well preserved historic medieval village located about
170km east of Rome. The village has documented origins back to the
9th or 10th Century, but the area was known as a mountain retreat
since Roman times.
