Not sure I'd call most of the Bundesliga stadiums "beautiful", Berlin and the Allianz certainly are but the rest are pretty functional.

The redevolpment in Germany certainly seems better planned with fewer white elephants than other recent major football events but I'd say the 2002 and 2010 WC's plus euro 2004 had a better looking lineup of stadiums.

For character and variety I'd say it has to be english county cricket

Of the European leagues my favourite is Portugal. So many beautiful and unique stadiums were built for Euro 2004. Shame that many of them are white elephants.

Yes! In this new Season the team União Leiria changed the stadium because it is very expensive the costs of maintenance.

Now this stadium is empty:

Another "white elephants":

Aveiro - 8 km from the city.

Coimbra - the local suporters dont like the distance from the stands to the field

Bessa, Oporto - Local team Boavista plays in third division.

Algarve - some regional teams play in this stadium

other stadiums

Braga

Porto

Lisboa - Sporting

Lisboa - Benfica

finally, Guimarães - Vitória SC (my team XD)

And that's why they are the best IMHO.

PNC park's skyline view is just impressive.

It must be down to German Bundesliga and NFL. NFL stadiums are bigger, maybe that could tip the scales in favour of NFL

Hey, once-proud clubs fall on hard times -- look at Leeds.

Its average attendance might be getting lower - 8.409 -> 6.411 -> 5.787 -> 5.102 -> 4.429 -, but I wouldn't call it a white elephant.

This stadium is a regular venue for concerts (Rolling Stones, George Michael, U2, etc.) and it is commercially active (book store, travel agency, restaurants, bars, dancing, laundry, pharmacy, optician, health club, car renting, lawyers, etc.). Therefore, it's far from being something like a Ghost-Stadium or a financial loss.

P.S.: Do you really think Braga's attendances will remain the same when the team returns to its usual status?

Reasons are far from being the same. But that's another story.

Aveiro is in use.

The problem with Leiria is that the stadium doesn't belong to União but to Leirisport that rents them the stadium. Their relationship was always terrible.

Major League Baseball, in my opinion and for the following reasons:
- all stadia bar none are first class
- each field is unique
- more than half of the stadia are less than 15 years old
- +40K is the standard
- all were designed by the best firms in that domain (Populous, HKS, NBBJ, 360...)
- especially for downtown ones, integration within the surrounding area is just perfect (front building, materials...)
- lack of outstanding architecture?? Come on! Just have a look at Milwaukee Brewers park or Houston Astros field, just to name my two favourites...
- MLB ballparks tend to offer a spectacular view of downtown skyline over their outfield walls (personal favourites: 1. Pittsburgh 2. St Louis 3. Detroit 4. Baltimore 5. San Diego)
- unique and crazy features such as the Green Monster (Boston), the pond at Denver's, rooftops seating at Wrigley Field (Chicago) etc.
- a bit of retro touch particular to that league (inside and outside architecture, heritage promotion), and to the US sport in general (retired numbers, teams history...)
- I could go on...
