Nanaimo is a city in Vancouver Island 55 kms west of Vancouver (30 nautical miles from West Vancouver) and 110 kms northwest of Victoria.
It has a population of 78,692 (2006 census) and has been dubbed the "Hub,Tub and Pub city"
Hub because of its central location in the island and due to the layout of the downtown streets which form a hub pattern;
Tub because of its association of the bath tub racing
and Pub because of the numerous "watering holes in the old Nanaimo.
The city is where the main campus of Vancouver Island University is located
which brings many international students.
Notable residents are Diana Krall - jazz pianist and vocalist, Justin Chatwin, John de Santis, Cory Monteith, Cameron Bright - actors,
Ashleigh Harrington & Jodelle Feland - actresses, Shane Sutcliff - boxer, Gogo - keyboardist of the rock bank "Trooper"
and Allison Crowe - singer-songwriter and pianist.

I like the city too specially the heritage section.

@DWest - it was Sunday and according to locals, they closed shops
in mid afternoon, so that explained the less people in the streets. I was a little surprised the public bus stopped running
at 4:00 o'clock on that day only (otherwise, it's six I think)so taxi is the only option.
