Regardless of what happens to that building, the Co-op supermarket is finished. They had a good run, but decent competition — at last — will see them off.

Aren't the neon light clock and barometer in the listing doc? (I think someone posted bits of it on here a while ago...if not, then I've made it up and it's just wishful thinking). I do like them, it's like our own little OXO towers.....

Marriot did a good job on the conversion of the old Speke Airport terminal building into a hotel. Different architectural influence but there's a degree of overlap.

Oh dear, that's not very clever - this from the Heritage, Design and Access Statement @ http://planningapplications.newcastl...=LP3I67BS05100
Clock faces will be repaired with new lighting to replace original neon. Clocks will not be made operational. Tell me, what is the point of having a clock if its doesn't work, or at least on more than twice per day

The main hotel?! Or the options for the lower levels?

Underwhelming to say the least, especially for such a brilliant building. But I suppose it's better than having it stood empty.

I thought it was gonna be 4star? Travelodge? Rather disappointed if that is true- then again it will be ideal for the stag and hens right next door to the gate- it will make a roaring trade

I've stayed at the County Hall Premier Inn - really well done. To be honest as far as hotel chains go, Premier Inn are pretty good for the price you pay.
The only weird thing in County Hall is the feeling that the floor's moving when you're in the rooms. Not shaking as if there's an undergroung going past, but actually swaying slightly. I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if the floors are suspended on cables from above somehow, possibly due to listing restrictions on drilling into the walls to support new floors. As for the Travelodge, it's a shame that they've got the Co-op, but as people have said it'll keep the Stag/Hen groups heading for The Gate in one nice neat area. Well, when I say nice and neat, you know what I mean... |
