This isn't a building project, but is under construction I guess. It's a pretty innovative interchange and I thought the video was pretty cool.
Anyone driven by there lately?

Which interchange are you specifically speaking of?

BTW, Ballantyne is growing like weeds again. There are now a few lowrises (10-20 floor range) springing up.

The 85-485 interchange on the east side.

I was reading up on it a bit. Takes a lot of land for a turbine interchange but you save a fortune on flyovers.

You're right about that and I think it would be a lot speedier build. If I'm not mistaken the NCDOT owns the right of way already.Last time I rode by there before I moved it looked pretty desolate so I don't think imminent domain would be an issue.

Here's something I drew several years ago that I thought would fill out the skyline nicely.

I think we need another type of building, like a boxy type, or something else and not a pointed one. It would look too much like Atlanta.

It's all about good architecture and not looking "too much like" any particular city. A regular box as a new tallest would be pretty boring, unless it's a variation of a box like the Comcast tower in Philly.

There was a Childress Klein project announced as 12 stories with 200 apartments a few months back. The project put out a bid for contractors this week, and they have doubled the size of the building to 21 floors with 372 apartments. Construction will start in 2012. The building is going where Twelve Charlotte (37 stories) was supposed to go, so while this is a good bit smaller than twelve, its nice that its going to be a substantial building 200+ feet.

Quote:
Building elevations show 21 floors (1 level lobby, 5 levels of parking, 1 club level, 14 levels of apartments). The good news is the parking garage levels will have units facing the park, so no exposed parking deck from the front of the building (similar to The VUE).

Building height is 227' to the roof plus another 8' or so of screening cornice, so about 235' total. So it will visually be a step down from Catalyst which is 27 stories and 372', but certainly not short.

Building has first 2 floors of cast stone/brick then the rest is stucco, I think similar to what 330 S Tryon uses. Top 3 floors are a different shade.

No retail which is a huge shame, though there are going to be 372 units, which is a lot of people. That is going to be a very active park.

Great looking building!!!! Great Scale!

I never get to make it out to see Ballantyne, I'm always visiting friends in South Park area. Where are these new 10 -20 story buildings going up at over there?
Back in 2001 I worked at Pinkerton in Ballantyne and there were only a handful of office buildings then. All low rise.

I semi agree with my friend Mr Bond from the lower Snohomish County Region. We are both akin to our Seattle skyline, always looking for more. Now that I live in Charlotte I feel we need some more filler buildings. This time I am hoping for 25-45 story modern but not too regal looking structures. Almost a Vancouver looking residential feel with a typical Eastern Seaboard commercial building style. Amen to Charlotte for using bricks. How about a new giant brick exterior structure consisting of 3 to 5 color bricks strategically placed in some form of an architectural design bliss. Lets not be Atlanta or Philly or Boston. Make it unique in a Charlotte kinda way. Oh and South BLVD will definitely be a "midtown" in 15-25 years or so. I can guarantee that. Ballantyne is just a phase, and will not continue since they ran out of land. University area had potential that I feel it is no longer there for at least another 15 years. North Tryon can disappear and become the second midtown for all I care. Oh, and that area west of uptown, west of 77 can become a new role model for how to change property values in the south.

Ballantyne is just a phase? They are in the process of undergoing a 500 acre 1 billion dollar expansion...

Folks over on UP believe that it has applied for a permit this week, an indication that it is going ahead.

I have it on good authority that Grubb's Rennaissance project will now feature Novare's new Apartment tower Brand "Sky House" which are being built all over the Southeast. The project will probably be the same Unit size as the others, except the project as a hole will feature a 25-30 story Sky House Apartments stacked on parking and a 12-15 story office building. This will be the northern most skyscraper in Charlotte all the way at 10th and North Tryon. A full block north of our current northern most tallest building, adding some more breadth to the skyline.
