@ Texas Ranger,

I might be moving to Croatia (Adriatic Coast) in the coming few years, once I've saved up enough money to buy a house and live reasonably comfortably. Do you have any general advice for someone moving to Croatia? (e.g., about life in the country, things to be aware of, etc)

Yes, here are some:

1) If you open up a business, don't open up something that produces (like a factory), because the taxes are high, various "givings" are high and you will have have a very hard time to get people (better said the companies) to pay you, but regardless of whether you get the money, the government is going to demand it's taxes at the end of the month! Rather open something where you get payed immediately (an cash-only business) like a bakery, fast-food stand or whatever else you can think of.

2) Don't go to turbo-folk night clubs (narodnjački klubovi), it's attended by the mafia and various other hillbillies. If the "music" sounds turco-arabic, it's an turbo-folk club.

3) If you have an habit of showing numbers with your fingers, don't show the number 3 with your thumb, index finger and middle finger, it's an chetnik sign (actually an Orthodox Christian one, but hardly anyone will make the distinction).

4) Don't say or do anything pro-homosexual (actually, I would recommend not discussing (domestic) politics at all)).

5) Croatia is an "connections" society, so make connections!

6) We will enter the EU in 2013. (unless it gets rejected by referendum, but I doubt that will happen), so if you are going to buy a car, waiting until then is probably a good idea, since the prices will probably be halved.

7) 0n the highways, even though the maximum recommended speed is 130 km/h (so that would make the maximum actually allowed speed 143 km/h I think), they tolerate you driving up to 160 km/h (only where you see the 130 km/h signs).

8) When buying real estate, always try to bargain the price by as much as possible (prices are way over-inflated in most places, and even if they weren't, trying to bargain is always a good idea)

9) Croatia is generally an extremely safe county, so unless you go around provoking people or go to one of those turbo-folk nightclubs, the chances of something (bad) physically happening to you whether during the day or night are generally 0,000000000000000000000000001%.

10) Tap water and food and generally of good quality across the country.

That's all I could think of right now, if I think of anything else, I will add it in an new post.

I have an idea for a medical technology business that I want to start; but assuming my idea works, I would probably try to have it based in some tax haven anyway. (Regardless of where I live)

Croats listen to Turco-Arabic style music? I never would have imagined. I could never see myself going to such places anyway, but thanks for the warning.

Not a problem for me. I am apathetic about homosexual-related issues anyway.

Damn! Just like Israel! And there's like 5 Jews there, so there goes any obvious connections.

Oh that's good to know. And how is public transportation in major cities? For example if I were to live in Rijeka or Zadar or Dubrovnik, would I be able to get by without having my own car?

Shit! That's fast! Sounds like Israel (more or less).

Oh that's good to know! I am Israeli; so I would bargain even if it isn't customary. I just wish I could have brought property in Croatia before prices started going up like crazy...

That's good to know. I think I'll just avoid those hillbilly's and try to meet nice and normal Croatian people.

Oh that's good to know. I am just worried how I am going to survive in Croatia, since apparently you guys have a strong liking for pork and I don't touch the stuff. :/

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

And do you have any recommendations for which towns/cities would be nice to live in? I think I would prefer something on (or near) the coast, but I really don't know much about Croatian cities other than what I've seen in photos.

1) Lichtenstein is close by.

2) I cringe to call those people Croatian, but yes, a lot of the Croatian youth listen to such "music". This is an example of what I am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ucFiSsVVmo Even though there are much worse examples, but even this example sounds turco-arabic-gypsy to me.

3) There are supposedly still around 2500 Jews in Croatia.

4) In Zagreb the public transportation is crowded, but you can get around without a car, as for the other major cities, I don't have much information about their public transportation, but I really can't see why you couldn't get around them without a car.

5) We do like pork, but you can get whatever kind of meet you want here, food really shouldn't be a problem, actually the food is probably one of the best things about the country.

6) Your welcome.

7) If you want to live on the coast, if you want to live in Dalmatia, then I would suggest Zadar ( a lot has been invested in it in recent years and I think it will become the economical center of Dalmatia soon), while if you want to move to Istria, Pula would probably be the best choice. As for the continental part of the country, Zagreb is obviously the economic center of the country, so from that point of view it would make the most sense to move there, some smaller continental cities that are doing nicely are Varaždin, Čakovec and Koprivnica.

Interesting music. Is this the kind of music that neo-nazis listen to in Croatia? (I am a little confused.... I don't know much about Croatian hillbilly's yet )

Really? I heard some good things about Croatian food. I know you guys eat things like Burek and cabbage stuffed with meat, lots of pork, and also lots of shrimp. Do you have any favorite Croatian dishes? Is the food closer to that of Italy? Turkey/Greece? Other Eastern European/Slavic countries? Or is it some combination of everything?

And I can't wait to try Bajadera. It looks really delicious.

Yeah, I think if I move to Croatia, I will need to be near the coast, otherwise I don't see much reason for me to move. Besides, my girlfriend lives on the coast in Zadar. And, not for this to sound the wrong way, but I am not moving to Croatia because of the economic opportunities; I think the only way for me to do well there, from an economic point of view, will be to have my own business. And the business(es) that I have in mind don't necessarily require living in a big city.

Well, I hope to visit sometime this year and see how the country is like. I have heard it's one thing to visit Croatia, and quite another to live there. So it should be an interesting and eye-opening experience.

Certainly, it is a very beautiful and impressive country and I wish you guys all the best.

They are hypocritical imbeciles, they listen both to the turko-arabic-gypsy sounding stuff from Serbia (like the video I posted above) and to Croatian "nationalist" music like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOTl8ux2K8A

My favorite Croatian dishes are sweets like rapska torta, štrike, orahnjača and makovnjača. I would say it is closer to the (south) Slavic countries.

Zadar then seems to be the best choice for you.

Yes, living here and visiting are definitely two different things, even though if your earnings will come from abroad, I can't see you really having any problems here.

You mean nazi collaborators from WW2, don't you?

As for your places to invest, Estonia celebrates the SS, (FYR) Macedonians are mythomaniacs who think that they are Greeks and Georgia is place where they blow up monuments to the soldiers who fought against the nazies the Great Patriotic War (members of the Red Army, you know, the guys who liberated Auschwitz).
