source: bizjournals

Reuters: FAA Deal Brokered
source: bizjournals

The partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation AdministrationbizWatch grounded about 14 projects at South Florida airports, which signifies the importance of a reported deal on Thursday.

The FAA fell into a temporary shutdown on July 23 after Congress failed to pass its 21st short-term funding extension. Congress recessed for summer vacation this week, delaying any chance for a quick funding measure until September.

Reuters reported late Thursday that Congressional leaders had struck a deal to resolve the issue.

Construction workers across America will lose their jobs and local communities will be hurt the longer this goes on, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood had warned earlier. Congress needs to pass an FAA bill to prevent further economic damage.

He reportedly called the breakthrough a tremendous victory for workers who were furloughed.

As a result of the shutdown, 12 workers on a $2.1 million status light project at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International AirportbizWatch were removed from the job, airport spokesman Greg Meyer said earlier Thursday. The project is an extra safety measure that includes embedding LED lights in runways, along the side of runways and where runways meet taxiways to let pilots know the runway is safe.

The south runway expansion project at the airport was not been impacted because grant funds could still be accessed electronically, Meyer said.

Miami International AirportbizWatch has 13 projects that could have been impacted by the FAA shutdown.

Pre-applications for a re-roofing project on the old Concourse A and a resurfacing and lighting project on a diagonal runway were delayed, MIA spokesman Marc Henderson said. The applications were submitted through the FAA area district office in Orlando, where employees were furloughed. Work on a project that would relocate runway navigational aids was also delayed.

The tower at Opa-locka Executive Airport is currently under construction, and installation of FAA equipment was affected by the shutdown, Henderson said.

Palm Beach International AirportbizWatch was not been impacted by the shutdown, spokeswoman Casandra Davis said.

Prior to the shutdown, the FAA was prepared to award contracts for new air traffic control towers at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and in Cleveland, according to a transportation department release. The award process was suspended because the agency no longer had access to the Airport and Airway Trust Fund.

During the shutdown, airports statewide lost access to $88 million in project funding, including $1.2 million for Fort Lauderdale airport projects, more than $4 million for Miami airport projects and more than $1.2 million for West Palm Beach airport projects, a transportation spokesperson said. In addition, 26 Florida-based FAA employees were furloughed.

Charter flights from Fort Lauderdale to Cuba start in September
Source: Miami Herald

Charter service to Cuba, operated by JetBlue, will begin from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Sept. 12.

Airline Brokers Company, which already offers charter flights from Miami International Airport, is adding Fort Lauderdale to its schedule. U.S. Customs and Border Protection approved the Broward airport to host charter flights in March.

Flights to Havana are scheduled for Mondays and Saturdays and are expected to cost just under $400, round-trip, for adults.

Conditions on who can travel to Cuba still apply. The U.S. government allows Cuban exiles who have relatives on the island and some Americans under certain categories to visit.
