Liverpool Riot 2011

As I write this the London riots have spread to Liverpool where it is reported some 300 people have descended on L1 setting cars/vans and buildings on fire and fighting with police officers.

Post any images of building damage (really hope there is not much) on this thread/news articles.

As a lover of Liverpool's architecture I hope from the bottom of my heart these bastards don't touch any of the gems that our city is privileged to have. We've lost enough because of the blitz and dodgy council decisions.

Although this is bad, it's not reached a scale equivalent to those seen in Tottenham yet. THe police have dealt with it quite well, the main fear is that it carries on tomorrow.

How long will it take before the riots spread to all UK cities? This is actually quite scary

It's going to start raining across the UK from tomorrow night onwards.

Since these riots appear to have no real impetus I'd imagine a little rain will put a damper on things.

burnt out van by the women's hospital and a couple of burnt out car on Lawrence road this morning, looked like a lot of tipped over wheelie bins, a couple of wheelie bin fires and a few bus shelters smashed, not much damage to shops or houses from what I saw at about 7am this morning

Riots: Violence flares in Liverpool for up to five hours

Violence flared in Liverpool for up to five hours overnight as rioters took to the streets in the south of the city.

The police worked to contain the rioters, rather than confronting them

Cars and wheelie bins were set alight during the disturbances which spread from the city centre to Toxteth, Dingle and Wavertree.

The disorder started at about 22:00 BST and calmed down at about 03:00 BST.

There were reports of hundreds of youths on the rampage. Merseyside police said they had only arrested six people so far.

Andy Ward, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, said the violence was a "copycat issue", as London saw its third night of rioting.

Two officers hurt

The rioters set fires to try to stop the police behind them

"It is a very saddening picture to be honest," he said.

"We had a situation last night where a number of young people decided to gather and they have decided to go on a spree of disorder and violence across parts of south Liverpool."

He said the youths had organised on social networking sites, which he conceded made the force's job more difficult.

He said police officers were attacked, with two suffering injuries to their legs.

It is understood the windows of Admiral Street police station were smashed in and a police van burned out.

The force tried to contain the troublemakers rather than get involved in running battles.

As the night progressed, the group became more fragmented as officers in riot gear and wielding batons, supported by police vans, sealed roads off.

However, there were several stand-offs as rioters pelted officers with missiles, from golf clubs to bricks and bottles.

Each flashpoint would end with the mob dispersing but they often regrouped elsewhere.

A particularly fierce confrontation took place near Admiral Street police station. Officers came under attack from about 100 youths, as residents looked on.

'Tesco store looted'

After midnight, police warned members of the public to avoid the Smithdown Road, Upper Parliament Street, Lodge Lane and Lawrence Road areas.

Princes Road and Princes Avenue was particularly badly hit, with several cars set on fire.

A works van was set alight in nearby High Park Street and the windows smashed at Mount Carmel Social Club.

The rioters also scattered bins across the road, setting them alight, to try to stop police pursuing them.

There were reports that the Tesco Express store in Myrtle Street was looted - with some of the raiders said by witnesses to be as young as 10.

However, homes do not appear to have been damaged and there were no reports of injuries.

By 03:00 BST police set up roadblocks at the troublespots as police helicopters circled overhead.

Mr Ward said Merseyside Police had been prepared for last night but the force had not expected the scale.

He said while there had only been six arrests overnight, an investigation was under way and the perpetrators would be traced.

Residents referred to the violence as "madness" and "senseless".

One said: "This has been waiting to kick off for a while. They will be back on the streets tomorrow night."

Mr Ward said: "Tonight we will have a very robust response to events that take place."

Riots predominantly occur in summer.

I hope this gets rid the Cameron Tory government. They are in cloud-cuckoo land. Just over a years after they get their arses in the seat and what happens????

In 1981, as now, they said it was just criminality. Everyone knew it was not.
The same on this occasion. The flashpoint has little relevance to the real motives of the unrest. This is one way of the disenfranchised, landless, have-nots expressing frustration at their lot in life.

Of course the sensible shoe wearing middle classes will point to the disenfranchised as architects of their own doom and shot on sight.

Russia Today says a survey of the primes reasons are:
  1. Dismay at the economy
  2. Failure of the muti-cultural society

I would say only No. 1 is relevant.

One wonders why in that case wrecking the areas where they and other working class or "disadvantaged" people live is going to help? Going up to Edinburgh and burning "Fred the shreds" house might be a better idea!

I suspect no one is happy about the economy but not everyone is out looting and burning other people's property. In parts of London they have destroyed the flats above shops where very ordinary people live leaving them with nothing.

Much of it is I suspect simple criminality taking advantage of a mass of people and general confusion in order to steal.

Liverpool MPs say rioters won't tarnish Liverpool as David Cameron recalls Parliament
By Ian Hernon
Aug 9 2011

LIVERPOOL MPs today vowed that a minority of "copycat" rioters will not be allowed to once again tarnish the city's image as David Cameron announced Parliament would be recalled on Thursday.

The Prime Minister said: "Those responsible will feel the full force of the law."

Riverside's Louise Ellman, whose constituency bore the brunt of the violence in Liverpool, said: "We are determined to ensure that this does not reflect badly on the decent people of Liverpool."

David Cameron, who flew back from holiday, was today chairing a meeting of Cobra, the civil emergency committee.

A No 10 spokesman said that the prime minister had returned because "the situation has become more serious."

Earlier Home Secretary Theresa May did not rule out extraordinary measures to reclaim the streets, including curfews, water cannon and the deployment of troops.

She said that "in these circumstance" she would listen to what the police feel they need to do the job.

The rioting, which started in London's Tottenham district, has now spread to Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham and Bristol.

Mrs Ellman said: "Such copycat attacks on property amount to bad behavioyur which will not solve any of the problems confronting my constituents.

"It is important that the police identify the culprits and stop them doing further damage to our community.

"In the 30 years since the Toxteth riots Liverpool has changed due to massive efforts to rebuild the city and its image."

But she said that there was "no case" locally for curfews or water cannon.

Walton MP Steve Rotheram, who as a young bricklayer helped to rebuild Parliament street after the 1981 riots, said: "A spark has been lit and the job now is to see that it doesn't escalate.

"We must not allow this to tarnish Liverpool's image after we have spent so many years repairing it following Toxteth."

And Wavertree's Luciana Berger was today helping volunteers clear up broken glass and debris in Lodge Lane and Smithdown Road.

"People are turning up to show that the Liverpool community spirit is alive and kicking," she said. "They want to show they are different from the mindless minority which wreaked such havoc.

"The police have done sterling work and we must ensure that they have adequate numbers and resources to prevent further trouble."

These bullshit reports are really getting on my nerves. It has nothing to do with the faltering economy or multiculturalism, it's thugs, who are using any excuse they can possibly find to cause trouble. Do they not understand this?

Calm down! It's only RT. They regularly spout anti-western bullshit at any given opportunity.
