BD, NABH roll out infection control in India, Kerala first to implement SAFE-I certification
Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a leading global medical technology company and NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers), a constituent body under the Quality Council of India (QCI), have joined hands together to launch the infection control programme. The collaboration, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two partners earlier, is a step towards strengthening health systems in the country and promoting continuous quality improvement to ensure the best care for patients when visiting hospitals with effective infection control practices in place.
Setting another benchmark for the healthcare system in the country, Kerala became the first State to roll out a national infection control programme aimed at supporting hospitals in attaining quality-of-care standards. SAFE-I certification will be viewed as a precursor for preparing healthcare organisations for NABH accreditation. Through its experienced clinical team, BD will guide applicant hospitals toward SAFE-I preparation and other relevant capacity building workshops, he added. This infection control programme will be completed in three phases. During the first phase, initial workshops will be carried out across hospitals in India to ensure the SAFE-I programme is adopted by hospitals. This will be followed by the second phase where Centres of Excellence (CoE) and health economic models will be developed for the enhancement of patient safety and infection control standards in India. The last phase will augment national capability of SAFE-I standards dissemination by expanding CoE network. The flagship SAFE- I programme was started by BD India in 2008 in association with Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) and National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). ![]() This looks more like an IT building or a Hostel than a hospital. I thought hospital structures should be more open than these kind of closed structures.

Medical College awaits aid for deaddiction wing
KOCHI: In spite of the excise department’s promise to aid the setting up of a de-addiction centre for Kalamassery Cooperative Medical College, no money has been sanctioned for it yet.
The decision to set up a de-addiction centre in the hospital was taken last year, after a proposal was put forward by the excise department to aid the setting up of such centres in Kerala. Taking the proposal into stride, the cooperative college was the first to ask the aid of the department. “We were interested in the proposal because it provided us an opportunity to help addicts in the society, whose number is increasing on a daily basis. The excise minister promised to aid us. We realised that the procedures were taking time and therefore, started a de-addiction centre on our own,” said Jaisurya, Regional Medical Officer at the Cooperative Medical College, Kalamassery.According to him, the psychiatric ward on the lower floor of the hospital has been converted into a de-addiction centre. A doctor with the hospital said, “Sometimes we are forced to make the psychiatric patients and the de-addiction patients share the same room,” he said. “We don’t have the facility to give complete care to the patients. Therefore, the relatives of the victims are also forced to stay back. Once the government sanction’s the money for setting up a different block for the de-addiction centre, the problem would be solved,” Jaisurya added. An official of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC), which has been handed over the responsibility to provide the financial aid to the hospital as per the orders of the excise department, said, “The government has requested the KSBC to finance `30 lakh to the hospital. We have decided to release the money. However, we still have not received any orders from the government to release the money.” Excise Minister K Babu said, “The money for the project will be immediately released.”URL-http://expressbuzz.com/cities/kochi/...ng/367344.html

Ayurveda popularising among Germans
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Like many enlightened societies, Germans are also finding a way to beat the stress and pressures of routine urban life and stay healthy by embracing authentic ayurveda of Kerala. More and more Germans above the age of 50 are reportedly preferring the ancient Indian system of medicine to stay healthy and reduce stress.
Recently, leading figures from the health sector of Germany took part in a workshop, titled ‘Ayurveda: Wellness or Medicine’, in Munich, organised by Kerala Tourism. “We presented ayurveda of Kerala to the German audience as there is an increasing demand to stay healthy and improve wellness among the people there,” said Kerala Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar. “Our data shows that the highest number of people coming for ayurveda treatment to Kerala from abroad are from Germany,” Kerala Tourism Director Rani George said. Celebrity Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci had come to Kerala for ayurvedic treatment some time ago for his chronic back ailment. “The promotional campaign on ayurveda is a boost to Kerala’s Tourism sector in Germany,” she said. The workshop also witnessed demonstrations on various subjects like ayurveda massage, ayurveda cooking and ayurveda oils. Mark Rosenberg, chief executive officer of the European Ayurveda Academy, Detlef Grunert, ayurveda practitioner and an expert in sports medicine and Sylvie Peipe, a medical ethnologist and ayurveda therapist were among the panel of experts at the workshop. As part of the focused promotion of ayurveda, Kerala Tourism would also participate in two international wellness fairs in Germany next month and enter into a tie up with online shops in a marketing campaign to reach the customers.
