Kerala’s famed Nehru Boat Race got off to a colourful start yesterday at the Punnamada Lake, watched by more than 30,000 people, including hundreds of foreigners.
The 59th edition of the prestigious boat race was inaugurated by federal Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. According to organiser Tomy Pulikattil, this edition appears to have become one of the best as far as the number of foreign tourists are concerned. “But with regards to the local crowd, this time the numbers appear less than the previous edition because of the holy month of Ramadan,” Pulikattil said. The crowd of over 30,000 gathered to watch the event included more than 2,500 foreign tourists, according to estimates. “This is amazing. We have been to several parts of the globe but are witnessing this marvellous spectacle for the first time ever,” said a British tourist shouting out with his wife in support of one of the snake boats which was in number two position. “We read a lot about the boat races of Kerala and have seen videos, but seeing it with our own eyes is an experience. We have decided that we will be back next year also,” he added. The most keenly-watched event was the snake boat race event simply because of the architecture of the boats that varies in length between 120ft and 140ft and each has about 120 oarsmen. “We are also impressed by the lovely display of the typical art and dance forms of Kerala that were showcased during the interval. There were around 140 artists performing and this is like the icing on the cake,” said a tourist belonging to a German group. Over the years this race is the curtain raiser for the new tourism season in the state and also the first of a series of popular boat races in nearby districts of Kottayam and Kollam. The boat race dates back to 1952 when then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited the state and a pageantry of boats accompanied him from Kottayam to Alappuzha. Former bureaucrat and governor P C Alexander was the sub-collector of Alappuzha at that time and had sprung into action, organising an impromptu race in Nehru’s honour. On returning to Delhi, Nehru donated a silver trophy, the replica of a snake boat placed on a wooden abacus with an inscription and his signature. This is the trophy that the winner of the snake boat category is awarded. About 50km from the venue, at a solemn function in a church at Mavelikara, Alexander was laid to rest with all honours. He died last Wednesday at the age of 90. |

Kuttanad: Tourism Department plans facelift
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The banks of crisscrossing canals and green paddy fields in Kuttanad will soon be made more attractive with the Tourism Department planning for a total face-lift. Kuttanad will be given more emphasis for infrastructure development in Kerala in the 12th Five Year Plan of the Union Tourism Ministry. An approach paper for the development of infrastructure in the tourism destinations in Kerala will be prepared before presenting it to the Union Government. Tourism Secretary V Venu told ‘Express’ that a study report had been prepared for infrastructure development in Kuttanad and backwaters in Alappuzha district. Based on the study, a master plan will be prepared which can bring about a massive change in the tourism sector in Kuttanad. It is estimated that the project could be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore. A portion of the fund will be provided by the Union Government and the rest will be met from other sources, including the fund of the Tourism Department. A two-day regional conference of tourism ministers from South India, held in Kollam recently, has discussed about the possibility of exploring the tourism potential in each state. The changes in the schemes of the Union Tourism Ministry will be discussed with Planning Commission before finalising the projects to be implemented in various states. Apart from Kuttanad, new destinations which can be developed as tourism spots will also be identified. The master plan will be prepared after considering the tourism development projects being implemented in the neighbouring states. Confederation of Kerala Tourism Industry president E M Najeeb said that it was high time the branding and marketing of tourism industry was redefined. Kuttanad can be converted into the most attractive tourism destination with more infrastructure and by improving wayside amenities. There should be tourism product upgradation as Kerala is facing stiff competition from the neighbouring states. The high taxation in tourism industry should also be revised for its growth, he said.

Correct. The distance from Kottayam to Cherthala is 32 Kms. Kottayam-Kumarakom is 14 Kms. Vaikom and Cherthala are very close, situated in the opposite banks of Vembanad Lake.

So this will be the nearest IT park from Kottayam. The so called Kannur IT park will be more than 50 kms away from Kannur.

Cherthala IT park is located at a place called Pallippuram, which is further north of Cherthala Town. Still, it is not going to be of any benefit to Kottayam Dt.

Joy Alukkas, Chairman of Joyalukkas group, announced on Wednesday that the jewellery group has decided to establish eight malls in the next 30 months at a cost of Rs. 1000 crores.
Named “Mall of Joy”, these malls would be designed to offer single window shopping experience mainly for weddings. The first in the chain of Mall of Joy would be inaugurated near the private bus stand on Mavoor Road in Kozhikode in March 2012, Joy Alukkas announced at a press conference. The second mall would be opened in November in Thrissur. The mall in Kochi would be on three acres situated near the Oberai Malland in Thiruvanathapuram in Attankulangara. In Palakkad the mall would come up near private bus stand, in Kottayam near the Baker Junction and in Alappuzha near Irumbupalam. “Today’s consumers love the convenience of a destination that offers them the best under one roof during every shopping trip”, Joy Alukkas said adding his malls were designed to meet such expectations. Besides Kozhikode, these Malls were proposed to be set up at Kochi, Coimbatore, Trissur, Kottayam, Palakad, Thiruvanathapuram and Alappuzha. Each Mall of Joy would feature two anchor stores – jewellery and silks besides fashion and clothing, accessories and cosmetics, watches, footwear, eyewear and optical, beauty parlour, restaurant and food courts and a play area for children. Each mall would have a minimum of two lakh sq feet areas with parking space for at least 200 cars and are being designed by architects and interior designers of international repute, Joy Alukkas said. The Joyalukkas group had a business turnover of Rs. 2,800 crores. It is expected to swell to Rs. 3,700 crore this year. Responding to questions about the spiralling trend in gold prices, Mr. Joy Alukkas said though the prices of gold had risen, the volume of sales had dipped. Joyalukkas group would open sales outlets in different parts of the country in the coming months and that it was also preparing for a public issue, he said. Mr. Alukkas who started business with a showroom in the United Arab Emirates, now owns a chain of 85 showrooms spread over nine countries. As many as 26 of them are in Kerala. Seed godown at Kalarcode to fill the rice bowl of Kerala
ALAPPUZHA: The state government has set up a
seed godown complex at Kalarcode in Alappuzha to provide quality seeds to Kuttanad farmers on time. Agriculture minister KP Mohanan would inaugurate the new facility constructed by the Kerala State Seed Development Authority, on Friday, said agricultural department additional director V V Pushpangadan at a press conference here on Thursday. Ninety per cent of seeds required by the farmers in Kuttanad can be stored in this godown, he said. "Kuttanad farmers would need as much as 1,000 metric tons of seed for the second round of cultivation, and around 3,000 metric tons for 'puncha' cultivation. This godown can store 2,000 metric tons of seed, and the seed processing plant here can convert two metric tons of paddy crops to seed within an hour," he said. "The construction of two seed godown complexes under the Kuttanad package is on at Mavelikkara and Panthalam. Each godown will have a capacity to store 2,000 metric tons of seeds. The construction of another such complex with 2,000-metric ton capacity at Eruthenpathy in Palakkad will be completed soon. Once these buildings are completed, the farmers in the state would not need to depend on other states or private agencies for seeds," Pushpangadan said. He said the government allocated Rs 2 crore to Kuttanad farmers who had suffered crop-loss last summer. All farmers should insure their crops for getting compensation in case of crop-loss. G Sudhakaran MLA will preside over the inaugural function of the seed godown. |
