Sure, but most people who visit Chengdu (they're staying mainly in the central districts) won't see this masterpiece. Only we skyscraper fetishists will go on a pilgrimage to the city outskirts to see it in person.

If you go to NYC, it's really hard not to see the 1WTC. If you go to Shanghai, it's really hard not to see SWFC or the Shanghai Tower. If you go to HK, it's really hard not to see ICC. But if you go to Chengdu in the future, it will be easy to miss Greenland Tower. And IMO that really shouldn't be like this.

I'm sure they can see a 468 meter tower from the center. (On a clear day)

Yeah, probably from some skyscrapers in the city center, but not from street level.

i was thinking about this tower and really cannot make my mind up whether i love or hate the fact that this building will be so far outside the currently growing skyline. One the ne hand it will be drawing even more attention and look even taller and there will be nothing to distract from this uniquely designed building. On the other hand, Changdu has some really nice building clusters and with that being outside it just adds to more locations that all develop independently and therefor take longer to grow big enough for this wow factor that dense clusters can give you. just some random thoughts i had. (sadly no new update on gaoloumi)

Definitely some progress.

Just to back to the discussion about where the building will be visible from. It should be visible from the Global Center ('world's largest building') even on a smoggy day. That's the new southern center with a cluster of skyscrappers, which in future I think most visitors will go to at some point. It won't, however be visible from the traditional heart of the city tianfu square/chunxilu unless your in a tall building. I'd imagine you will also be able to see it from the elevated second ring road. The new airport is located to the south of the side but to the west, so it will be interested to see if it will be visible from the highway route in to the city.

yeah it is quite weird to think about it. The layout of the city does suggest that Tianfu Square is the center of the city in any terms, the whole street layout with the rings around it and the metro lines meeting exactly there does suggest this. Yet the skyline shows a different trend. A lot of the skyscrapers are in the south of the city by the industrial park areas. Another cluster is coming near the center but more to the north and now this behemoth is coming for a completely different area of the city.

skyline is formed not only of 200+ and 300+ towers, 100+ high rises can make a nice skyline too as they do in most of the European cities and as you see in this SSP map most of the high rises in Chengdu at the moment are at so called city centre

On the left side of this picture is TianFu square, on the right ChunXiLu. There are: 200m Sichuar airlines tower, 169m BaiYang building, 170m Aerospace tower, 180m Yanlord and 165m Fraser towers also 248m IFS and 339m TV tower in the background. All these and more in the city centre.
However skyline doesn't have to be in the city centre as it's not in London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing and so on

In the map below I only put 200+m towers, Greenland is nb1, and the distance from Greenland to city centre and to the TianFu new area (Global centre and south CBD) seems to be very similar, I would say ~10km.

Yeah, excellent maps. Makes it much more easy to visualize. By smoggy day I mean a typical Chengdu day, not a real smoggy day were you can't see shit. But I guess by the time it will by finished there will be other high rises and skyscrapers finished, so we won't really know for sure.

Construction Starts On Chinas Fourth Tallest

The Chinese property developer, Greenland, has begun construction on what will be the tallest skyscraper in south-western China in the city of Chengdu.

Designed by supertall specialists Smith + Gill, the 468 metre tall building has been designed to accommodate a mixture of grade A office space, a hotel, and shopping mall in the form of an attached six storey podium building.

120,000 square metres of office space will be situated in the lower part of the tower where the floors are largest, with a 51,000 square metre luxury hotel in the middle and at the top where the space is at a premium there will be 42,000 square metres of executive hosting space.

Drawing its architectural inspiration from the mountains that dominate the countryside around Chengdu and which are one of the world's more unlikely whiskey producing areas, the tower features a complicated collection of angled ridges with the crystaline appearance further emphasised at night when the ridges will feature LEDs that will make the edges of the facade shimmer like ice. At ground level a massive canopy encompasses part of the pedestrian approach to the tower with the glazed of a glacier.

The extreme height of the tower is further justified philosophically by the desire to connect heaven and earth through the design. Once built it will be the fourth tallest in the entire country.

"fourth tallest", chuckle.

" Fourth tallest in the entire country once built"

Even if it was completed by next week it still wouldn't be the fourth tallest in the entire country.

If completed this week, it would be the third tallest building in China officially. By CTBUH, only Shanghai World Financial Center and International Commerce Centre are taller.

Yeah you are right it would be the third tallest in China if completed next week and not counting the Shanghai Tower and the CTF or for that matter Ping An and Tianjin 117.
