Find your school on Google Earth soon

In the 90s, the Central government’s motto was to ‘teach a child with a click.’ But now the computer has made its way into classrooms in several schools and all the schools in Karnataka will soon be found on Google Earth.
Quote:
Under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the government has taken up an initiative
to upload all the schools including lower primary, higher primary and high schools on Google Earth. As a result, an alumni of a remote school in Dakshina Kannada sitting in his posh office at USA or UK or Australia can look at his school with a click of a button.

Speaking to City Herald, SSA district coordinator Shivaprakash said
that under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Dakshina Kannada, the authorities concerned will use Geographic Information System (GIS) to map 1,924 schools.
“The SSA will acquire geographical coordinates of all the schools including lower primary, higher primary and high schools.

The project also includes a web-based application for accessing the District Information System of Schools Education (DISE) database and the integrated database of schools. The project includes collecting the names and addresses of each government-aided and unaided school and DISE code in each education district from the state project office. It also includes visiting the schools and capturing the geographical coordinates using GPS in a prescribed format.”

“In fact, the Block Resource Centre in each cluster has been given 3G GPS facility enabled smart phones to take the photographs of the schools. They were asked to capture minimum of 10 photographs of every school that covers the school building and any other infrastructure present within the premises. Each photograph will capture the correct description of the particular school. In Dakshina Kannada, the photographs of all the schools have been clicked and sent to state SSA office.

Though uploading of all the schools of Dakshina Kannada has been complete, it is not open for the public access. It will be open for the public only when all the process in all the districts are complete. Once all the photographs are collected, it will be verified. Through the National Information Centre’s data server, all the information provided by the DISE will be uploaded to the Google Earth.”

He says that even the schools which were temporarily closed down were included while taking the photographs.

The details pertaining to the number of students, teachers, facilities available in the schools will also be uploaded on the Google Earth in the future. The initiative will help in giving information on the drinking water facility, toilet facility in schools and to implement the development work.

The functioning of the BRC and CRP can be viewed at the state-level through GPS mobile facility. At the same time, during election, the details from a particular booth can be obtained easily through GPS facility, he added

110 schools to have playgrounds

Quote:
110 schools to have playgrounds
Naina J A, Mangalore, Mar 12,2012, DHNS:

* Work can be taken up under MGNREGS too

All those government primary schools, which do not have playgrounds will get playgrounds within a year.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan district co-ordinator Shivaprakash said that 110 government primary schools do not have playgrounds in the district. A proposal has already been submitted to the government through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to allot land to have playgrounds in these schools. The work on playgrounds can be taken up under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) as well.

White paper on toilets

As per the direction of the Supreme Court, all the schools must have toilets by March 31, 2012.

Accordingly, preparations are on for issuing a white paper on toilet facilities in schools in Dakshina Kannada.

Shivaprakash said “all the 1,181 primary schools including 955 government schools have toilets, as per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are also conducting a re survey to make sure that all the schools have toilet facilities. The survey will be completed by March 20. After the survey, the Deputy Commissioner will issue a white paper on the same before March 31,” he said.

All the Block Education Officers and head teachers of the schools have already confirmed in writing that all the schools in their jurisdiction have toilet facilities. Dakshina Kannada has seven education blocks with 114 clusters.

Under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, as many as 108 disabled-friendly toilets have been constructed in 108 schools in the last two years, at the cost of Rs 50,000 each.

“We have submitted a proposal to the government to construct disabled-friendly toilets in all the schools in its Action Plan for 2012-13. We have identified 13 schools, which will require additional toilets, which will be constructed during 2012-13.”

At the same time, all the schools have water facility. There are few schools which have three sources of water i.e well, borewell and panchayat water connection. All the schools in Dakshina Kannada have basic infrastructure of electricity as well.

Two school buildings which are under construction at Nadupadavu and Kundadka are yet to get the electricity connection, he said.

All the government schools in Dakshina Kannada can also boast of having a library. Under SSA, grant of Rs 3,000 to Rs 13,000 was given to the schools to purchase books for the library, he said.

During 2012-13, 33,200 metres compound wall for the school property will be constructed in Dakshina Kannada district.

“We have also asked for furniture for 23,000 students this year, so that the old furniture can be replaced. At the same time, a proposal of Rs three crore has been submitted to the government for repairing the school buildings in the district.”

Teacher-students ratio

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan district coordinator Shivaprakash said that as per the Right To Education Act, the teacher and the students ratio should be 1:30. In Dakshina Kannada, the average teacher-students ratio is 1:24.

“Under SSA, we have sought funds for the construction of four additional classrooms during 2012-13. As 13 schools do not have a separate head masters’ room, the construction of the same has been included in the proposal for 2012-13.”

NITK sets up a rooftop hybrid power system

Quote:
* The research project will cater to the institute and also feed the state grid

Come summer and the state dreads power breakdowns. In an attempt to mitigate the power crisis, a rooftop wind-solar hybrid power system was recently set up at the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal.

Dr Dattatraya N Gaonkar, who is part of the project, told Bangalore Mirror that a 10-kW wind-solar hybrid power system was set up as part of a research project funded by the ministry of power (MoP) through the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore. The system is connected to the local MESCOM grid. It can cater to the demand of both MESCOM and NITK.

The system consists of two wind turbines of 3.2 kW each and a photovoltaic system of 3.6 kW capacity, a power electronic converter control system and related equipment. The converter can detect the load in NITK and feed the institute or connect to the MESCOM grid.

The project is being undertaken in two phases at a cost of Rs 25 lakh each.

The first phase covered the installation, which is complete. Studies on various parameters like the quality of power and wind speed are going on.
The researchers are also looking at the possibility of having rooftop grids for domestic purpose. Once the results of the studies are out, in the second phase, the researchers will design new controls for schemes considering two other sources, like fuel cell and micro turbines, along with the existing wind and solar systems.

Gaonkar said, “The project is a step towards setting up a micro-grid with multiple distributed energy sources capable of operating both in grid connected and isolated operation.” The others in the project include Dr Udayakumar Yerragatti and several PhD scholars.

Prof Sandeep Sancheti, director of NITK, Surathkal, said, “We are taking the lead in harnessing renewable energy sources through these projects. Also, such initiatives are needed for research purposes.”

Model government school in DK

Quote:
Mangalore,Mar 31, 2012, DHNS :

Reading corner in every classroom is speciality in this institution

A look at the campus of the Mullakadu Government Higher Primary School at Kavoor in Mangalore will give a person an idea of how a government school should ideally be.

A teacher helping students in their studies at Mullakadu Government Higher Primary School. dh photoNormally, a typical government Kannada school faces some shortcoming in facilities.

Be it hygiene, classroom, teachers, toilets, mid-day-meals there is always some issue that needs to be dealt with ‘urgently.’

However, a visit to this school is likely to change the perception of a government school.

The tiled floors, full-fledged library, playground, and a rangamandira can be seen only in private schools. However, here is a government school which is a head of others.

The school was started in 1965. At present as many as 257 students are pursuing education from first to eighth standard. Under Rashtriya Madhyamika Shikshana, ninth standard has been started from 2011-12. Now, the Zilla Panchayat has declared the school as a model school in the district.

The school had not received any additional funds to carry out the activities. Utilising the available funds, the school has created facilities for it, said officials.

Seating arrangement has been made for all the children in Nali Kali classrooms. One can also get a view of round table in the classroom for discussion.

The students are given opportunity to portray their creativity including in writing stories, poems in the classroom daily. ‘Meena Club’ is active in the school. The Club trains girl children in developing leadership quality, creates awareness on hygiene.

Reading corner in every classroom is the speciality of the school. The reference books needed for the students of a particular class are kept in the mini library in every classroom. This has helped the students to gain knowledge. At the same time, every classroom has teaching aids. The school also has a complaint box, first aid box, computer room, disable friendly toilet, water facility and fire extinguisher.

The school is ahead of the rest of schools in maintaining the documents pertaining to the school. The National Joint Inspection Committee from New Delhi had visited the school in January 2011. The committee has not made any remarks on the loopholes in maintaining the documents. With the effort of school head teacher Chandravathi Rai, the school was able to get the attention from all over.

She has won state-level best teacher award. Now, she wants to retire from service by taking up the work on compound wall. As many as eight teachers are tirelessly working by joining hands with each other to make the school a model school.

About 98 per cent of the children who are pursuing education come from labour class. Of which 80 per cent are from SC/ST. The students say prayers in English and Kannada on alternative days. Hence, children are quite confident of English language, says teachers.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash said “Mullakadu school was not given any special funds. However, the school authorities have utilised the available funds effectively. I feel proud to say that this is our model school.”

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan coordinator Shivaprakash said “we want all the government schools to excel on the model of Mullakadu school.”

Bantwal has 48 'smart schools' with webcam

Quote:
RENUKA PHADNIS

Last week, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) of Hassan wanted to speak to teachers of government high schools in Bantwal. Instead of travelling to each school, located in remote corners of this taluk, he pulled up at B.C. Road on NH8 and walked into the office of the Block Education Office. There, he logged into the Net, and using a webcam and Skype, he spoke to teachers of Navoor High School and Government High School, Manchi, about the "guidelines to improve SSLC results."

The school is part of Meghavahini, a project that, for the first time in the State, links online 35 government high schools, all in Bantwal, it is said. Seven aided schools and six private schools are also networked.

Other than officials, School Development Monitoring Committee (SDMC) presidents, headmasters (HMs), teachers, and students of Class 8 to 10, communicate with their counterparts in other networked schools using the webcam.

Chamaraj A.T, Hassan DDPI, said: "We are so loaded with work in this system of administration that we cannot reach many schools though we are concerned about them. So we say, 'You please come online'. It is a good way of creating a bond."

He said that teachers feel good that the DDPI was sitting with them trying to sort out their problems while enabling and motivating the headmaster.

He said: "There is so much stress on getting high marks, anxiety, and the HM is the pivot of any change in schools. But if we don't talk to teachers and give them confidence...the HM will not be motivated...

This (web conference) gives him moral support and is a real way to understand him and his subject, appreciate it.

It makes a difference to the way he transfers knowledge to his students."

Shashimangala Pai, HM Government High School, Sujir, near Farangipete, who came online, told The Hindu on the webcam that official communication and exam preparation were subjects that were frequently discussed.

H.N. Nanjundaswamy, Headmaster of the Government High School, Navoor, which is 6 km from B.C. Road, said that he and his students spoke over the webcam with other government high schools (such as the ones in Kavalapadur, Kanyana, Panjikallu, Soorya and Kodamannu).

Power shutdowns and connectivity pose a challenge. However, BSNL does respond to phone calls and ensures the connection was restored, said Ramananda, Education Co-ordinator, Bantwal.

Sudhakar K., BEO, Bantwal, said that 81 schools would get networked by July this year in Meghavahini. Plans were on to tie up with local engineering colleges so that students could learn more of electronics and physics.

Srinivas College, Valachil, is building a website that will help 380 educational institutions in Bantwal communicate, he said.

The university would then send the same before the State Government and seek permission to start the course. Mr. Murthy later told The Hindu that starting a certificate course would be a step towards commencing Bachelors and Masters Degree course in the fine arts.

They would consider starting a Fine Arts Faculty in the University, He said the university was awaiting permission of the State Government to start the M.A. (Bharatanatyam) course. Mr. Murthy said response had been poor to undergraduate courses in dance and music.

The Vice-Chancellor said Mangalore University had been working towards protection and promotion of native language, art, and culture. The university had 19 chairs dedicated to various subjects including Tulu, Yakshagana, and Fine Arts.

“Except for Ambigara Chowdaiah Chair, all the 18 chairs are active. In case of Ambika Chowdaiah Chair we are awaiting passage of a statute necessary for its working,” Mr. Murthy added.

Tailoring course for unemployed youth

Quote:
Mangalore, April 11, 2012, DHNS:

* Unit will have 48 sewing machines

Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT) in association with the Department of Textiles and Handlooms will hold training for unemployed youth in tailoring under Suvarna Vastraneethi, at its premises in Mangalore.

Addressing a press meet, MIFT Director M G Hegde said that Department of Textiles and Handlooms has set up a full-fledged unit in MIFT with 48 sewing machines to impart training to the youth.
He said minimum 40 youth can be given training in the unit at a time.

The applicant should have passed seventh standard and must be below 35 years of age. The selected will get a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month. Three types of training are given for the applicants viz one month, two month and three month.

The initial month-long training focuses on the operation of electrical and electronic sewing machines, with special emphasis on how to control the speed and maximise production and stitching. The training will help many youth in securing jobs in the readymade garment manufacturing units, in Bangalore and Hassan. “In fact, we are in contact with 10 garment manufacturing companies for providing placement for the trained youth,” he added.

He said there is a demand for cutting experts, quality control assistants and embroidery tailors. There is a need for 10,000 tailors for the garment units in Bangalore and Hassan. The MSW students are creating awareness among unemployed youth in and around Mangalore on Suvarna Vastraneethi.

However, several youth are not ready to get trained as many feel that tailoring is not a good profession, he said adding that pamphlets are distributed among the youth.

Two staffs from MIFT were given special training at Garment Training Institute in Bangalore, to impart training for the unemployed youth in the institute.

He said the institute with 20 machines was providing free training for unemployed youth for the last two years. “We had organised training in tailoring for 10 batches of students with 20 students each. About 150 trained youth are working in and around Mangalore and Manipal,” he said.

The best student in each batch hailing from economically poor background was given an electrically operated sewing machine free of cost by the institute chairman Dr Aroor Prasad Rao.

Dakshina Kannada gets excellent results
The Hindu

  • 123 schools secured 100 per cent pass result this year in SSLC as against 53 schools last year
  • 22 government schools have achieved the feat
  • Special classes by teachers pay dividend

Quote:
This year, the number of schools in Dakshina Kannada with cent per cent pass in the SSLC examinations, has more than doubled.

In 2011-12, 124 schools have got cent per cent pass results in the district when compared to 53 schools in 2010-11.

Of the 124 schools with cent per cent pass this year, 22 are government schools, nine aided schools, and 93 unaided schools, said a release from the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Dakshina Kannada. (In 2010-11, of the 53 schools that had scored 100 per cent pass results, there were eight government schools, two aided schools and 43 unaided schools.)

The same trend is reflected in Mangalore city where schools had overall got a higher pass percentage than last year.

Mangalore city block

The pass percentage in Mangalore City block is 94 per cent this year, an increase of over last year's 89 per cent. It stood first this year (and last year), in the district, Dayawathi, Block Education Officer (BEO), told presspersons in the city on Friday.

She said that in Mangalore city, 14 schools had got cent per cent pass result. Of them, two are government schools: Balmatta Government Pre University College for Girls (High School Section) and Government Junior Technical High School, Kadri Hills.

The one aided school with cent per cent pass is Adarsh Bharathi High School, Padil.

The 11 unaided schools with cent per cent results are: Capitanio English High School, Kankanady, Nalanda English Medium High School, V.T. Road, St. Aloysius High School, Urwa, BGH High School, Kavoor, St. Joseph's High School, Kulshekar, BEM High School, Car Street, Noble High School, Kunjathbail, Sarojini Madhusudan Kushe High School, Attavar, Beary's Public School, Hat Hill, Indira Gandhi Memorial High School, Konchady, and St. Ann's School, Kuntikana.

In Mangalore City, the pass percentage is 85.65 in government schools, 93.94 in aided schools and 96.16 in unaided schools.

Meanwhile, the pass percentage is 99.4 in three government schools: Milagres High School, Hampankatta, Sacred Heart High School, Kulshekara and Shrinivas Pathashala, V.T. Road. All three schools are opting for a re-evaluation as each of them has one student who has failed despite excelling year round, she said.

All girls pass

While all 77 students (all girls) of Balmatta Government Pre University College for Girls (High School Section) have passed, six have got distinction and 44 have got first class.

Ms. Dayawathi said that the school (which is in the same compound as her office) had teachers who worked like a family. Students begin the day with yoga and meditation.

Vinoda B., Headmistress in charge, Balmatta Government Pre University College for Girls (High School Section), told The Hindu that the results were due to the efforts of the eight schoolteachers, who worked as a team. In particular, the success was due to the special classes that the school held every day since June last year to clear the doubts of students from classes 8, 9 and 10. One teacher handles two days of special classes.

All students are encouraged irrespective of their academic performance. Last year (2010-11), the school's pass percentage was 95 and it was 100 in 2009-10, she said.

Puttur, Belthangady

Sheshashayana Karinja, Block Education Officer, Puttur, told The Hindu that 24 schools got cent per cent pass including one government school (Government High School, Sarve), two aided, and 21 unaided schools.

He said that the pass percentage has improved throughout the block due to training camps and the daily one-hour class held for six subjects on six days and special Maths coaching, he said.

Shivaram Bhat, Principal, Government High School, Sarve, told The Hindu that teachers held monthly tests and group discussions which helped students.

In Belthangady block, 16 schools got cent per cent pass. Of them four are Government schools (including Kalmanje, Guruvayankere, Mithabagilu and Koiyuru), six are aided and six are unaided schools, Lokesh C., BEO, Belthangady told The Hindu .

Speaking to The Hindu over the telephone, Ms. Aithal said that she used to travel from her house in Amasebail village to Kundapur town on the school bus, which was one-and-a-half hour's journey.

Her favourite subject is mathematics. She did not attend any tuitions.

“I used to study daily for three hours. I used to read what was taught in the school daily. Hence it was not heavy during the examinations. I used to be attentive in class. This used to help me grasp the subject properly,” she said.

“I want to become a doctor as I like to help people. I want to join MGM College in Udupi for PUC,” Ms. Aithal said.
