Belgrade Airport terminal overhaul advances

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has begun the third phase of its Terminal 1 overhaul today. As a result, the entire facility will be closed off to passengers with check-in and passport control procedures to be carried out solely at Terminal 2. The ongoing overhaul, scheduled for completion by April 2017, includes capacity expansion, new commercial space and a new automated baggage sorting facility. The newly refurbished hall between terminals one and two will feature 28 new check-in desks.

Hainan Airlines eyes Belgrade service

Hainan Airlines, China's largest private carrier by both market share and fleet size, will launch over ten international flights this year with Belgrade likely to be included as well. Speaking at the Belgrade Tourism Fair yesterday, the Serbian Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, said, "I expect for a deal to be reached with a private Chinese carrier for the introduction of flights between Beijing and Belgrade. Air Serbia is not in a position to commence direct flights to China. That is why I asked Chinese carriers to do so and we are very close to reaching a deal with a private airline. Following the good news concerning flights from Beijing, there will be more positive developments from China". Last month, Mr Vučić held talks with representatives from HNA Aviation, the parent company of Hainan Airlines, during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Hainan Airlines' Senior Vice President, Hou Wei, told the "China Daily" that economic growth campaigns like the Belt and Road Initiative, of which Serbia is a part of, and various bilateral free trade agreements have led to a rise in people-to-people exchanges, which is spurring demand for flights to certain destinations. He added that traffic rights for routes connecting major cities are tight, so direct flights to second-tier cities are practical. "Direct flights between first-tier Chinese cities and second-tier foreign cities, as well as second-tier Chinese cities and top-tier foreign cities, are expected to grow rapidly in the future, given the significant demand for international travel in China. We analyse the markets city by city, to study their economic development models, annual fiscal performance, average income and their demographics, like if the majority of their population is turning into middle class consumers given to wanderlust".

Earlier this week, Serbia's outgoing President, Tomislav Nikolić, noted he would bring "good news that will benefit both Serbian and Chinese citizens" following his state visit to the country next month. He added the news would be communicated to the public by the Prime Minister. Furthermore, earlier this week, Serbia's Minister for Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, Rasim Ljajić, met with China's Ambassador to Serbia to discuss "concrete steps to increase the number of Chinese tourists". Speaking after the meeting, the Chinese Ambassador said, "We expect for a direct air link between the two countries to be introduced this year, which, together with the abolition of visas for Chinese citizens, is the most important step towards a significant increase in the number of Chinese tourists to Serbia". Mr Ljajić noted that Serbia will present a joint product with Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia for Chinese tourists.

Sino-Serbian relations have soared since the launch of China's Belt and Road Initiative, which has seen the arrival of several large Chinese companies to Serbia and the abolition of visa requirements between the two nations. "We will launch more routes connecting China with countries and regions along these two trading routes to assist our counterparts in building and operating airports to improve local transportation services", Hainan Airlines' President, Sun Jianfeng, said. He added, "In comparison with 2016, a growing number of countries are working on simplifying visa procedures for Chinese travellers, including the introduction of digital visas, lowering of visa fees and shortening waiting periods".

Belgrade Airport posts strong Q1 results

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport handled just under a million passengers during the first three months of the year, recording its strongest first quarter on record. During the month of March, the airport welcomed 343.771 travellers, up 9.8% on 2016. The figure was accompanied by a 3% increase in the number of operated flights. As a result, during the first quarter of the year, Belgrade Airport saw 955.988 passengers pass through its doors, an improvement of 9.9% compared to the same period in 2016. The airport added almost 86.000 passengers on last year's result. Furthermore, both the national carrier and foreign carriers serving the Serbian capital saw their passenger numbers improve on last year.

Commenting on the results, Belgrade Airport said, "With a planned summer schedule which will see the introduction of new routes, a good charter season, as well as more charter flights during the Easter and May Day holidays than ever before, and an increase in capacity on existing services, Belgrade Airport anticipates for its passenger growth to continue into the year". During the first quarter, the airport opened its new de-icing facility, began work on the overhaul of its Terminal 1 building (expected for completion by the end of the month), unveiled plans to expand its departures area and began tender procedures for its 25-year concession process.

This coming Tuesday, low cost carrier Transavia will commence operations from Amsterdam to Belgrade, which will be followed by the basing of a second Wizz Air Airbus A320 aircraft in the Serbian capital during the second half of May. As a result, four new routes will be launched and frequencies will be boosted on existing services. Greece's Ellinair will commence new flights from Thessaloniki this summer, while Air Serbia will introduce services to Venice. Unlike last summer, the Serbian carrier will operate services to New York, Hamburg, St. Petersburg and Malta from the very start of summer. Despite decreasing frequencies on several routes, the airline will maintain the same capacity on many of them during the height of summer, more on which you will be able to read in the coming days. In addition, Israeli carriers Israir and Arkia, which commenced operations to Belgrade last winter, will maintain five and three weekly flights each from Tel Aviv respectively, with the latter deploying the Boeing 757 aircraft on two of three of its weekly services. Meanwhile, easyJet, Lufthansa and LOT Polish Airlines will boost capacity on their services to Nikola Tesla Airport.

Hainan finalising Belgrade flight plans

The HNA Group is finalising its plans for the launch of flights between Beijing and Belgrade with the Serbian President-Elect, Aleksandar Vučić, noting that an official announcement is due next month. "The [outgoing] President had constructive talks in China last week. I believe all is set for flights between Beijing and Belgrade and I will be able to formally announce the good news on May 14 or 15", the incoming President said ahead of his visit to Beijing next month. Initially, Mr Vučić noted that a formal announcement would likely occur last week, however, this did not materialise. The HNA Group, which owns Hainan Airlines, has confirmed it plans to introduce services to Belgrade this year, as well as invest in Belgrade Airport, a flight training school and an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul centre in Serbia.

The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, yesterday emphasised the upcoming service between the two capitals noting that, "Next month's visit will be an opportunity to discuss joint projects and strengthen economic and all other forms of cooperation, which will be attributed by the establishment of direct flights between China and Serbia". Last week, the Serbian government noted it was also looking into possible services between Shanghai and Belgrade. Air Serbia, which boasts a Special Prorate Agreement with Hainan Airlines, met with representatives from the HNA Group two weeks ago and is in discussions over strengthening the partnership between the two in order to cooperate on the future route.

During the first quarter, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Serbia has grown 102%. It comes after the two countries abolished visas for each others' nationals in mid-January. "We hope that the visa free regime, the establishment of a direct flight, joint presentation with our neighbours, as well as the strengthening of regional cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe will have an influence on Chinese tourists to perceive this region as more attractive than before", the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said. Flights between Beijing and Belgrade last operated in 2000 when they were run by JAT Yugoslav Airlines.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has marked the 55th anniversary since opening the doors at its present site. To celebrate the occasion, the airport has set up a gallery in its Terminal 2 building comprising of 55 photos of famous personalities who have used the airport's services including Queen Elizabeth II, Neil Armstrong, David Rockefeller, Elizabeth Taylor and Kirk Douglas, to name a few. Speaking at a birthday ceremony, Belgrade Airport's General Manager, Saša Vlaisaveljvić, said, "Since its opening in 1962 up until today, the airport has constantly expanded and developed to grow into one of the most successful companies in the country. With almost 2.000 employees and five million passengers handled per year, I can say it is our goal and a realistic expectation to surpass the 5.5 million passenger mark this year".

Belgrade readies for second long haul route

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport says preparations are underway for it to handle its second scheduled long haul service later this year. The airport's General Manager, Saša Vlaisavljević, noted, "We are expecting our second long haul route, which will be to Beijing. The service will launch in the second half of the year, although talks are still underway on the exact date". The HNA Group, which owns Hainan Airlines and another dozen carriers in China, has inked a letter of intent with the Serbian government to commence services between the two countries. Serbia's President Elect, Aleksandar Vučić, will travel to Beijing tomorrow where, he says, details of the new route will likely be made public on May 16 when he holds talks with the Chinese President and Prime Minister.

Hainan Airlines' Senior Vice President, Hou Wei, said that economic growth campaigns like the Belt and Road Initiative, of which Serbia is a part of, and various bilateral free trade agreements have led to a rise in people-to-people exchanges, which is spurring demand for flights to certain destinations. "Even though Hainan Airlines is a latecomer to the global market, pursuing a differential competitive strategy is necessary for the company, as other carriers have already scooped up many market resources", Mr Hou said. He added that traffic rights for routes connecting major cities are tight, so direct flights to second-tier cities are practical. On the other hand, HNA Group CEO, Huang Qijun, noted, "We will launch more routes connecting China with the Belt and Road countries and help our counterparts build and manage airports to improve local transportation services". The HNA Group is bidding as part of a consortium with China National Aero Technology for a 25-year concession for the financing, development, maintenance and management of infrastructure at Belgrade Airport.

Belgrade Airport's General Manager noted that the ongoing expansion and overhaul of its facilities will have it fully prepared to welcome a second widebody jet on a regular basis. "We are expanding capacity because there is a real need for it. Once the reconstruction of Terminal 1 is completed later this month, we will have 33 new check-in desks, including 28 standard ones and five self check-in counters for passengers to use at their disposal. The new check-in desks will be connected to a new baggage sorting system", Mr Vlaisavljević said. On the other hand, the Tourist Organisation of Belgrade said visitor numbers from China to Belgrade grew 124% during the first quarter, while the number of overnight stays increased 116%. "This gives us reason to be optimistic in the lead-up to direct flights from Beijing and we are certain numbers will further grow with the new service", the head of the Tourism Organisation added.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla airport boosts Q1 net profit

Quote:
BELGRADE (Serbia), May 15 (SeeNews) – Aerodrom Nikola Tesla [BEL:AERO], the operator of Serbia's Belgrade airport, said on Monday its net profit rose to 510.2 million dinars ($4.5 milion/4.1 million euro) in the first quarter of 2017 from 497.2 million dinars a year earlier.

Operating income increased 11.3% on the year to 1.959 billion dinars in the first quarter of 2017, while operating expenses rose 12.6% to 1.371 billion dinars, Aerodrom Nikola Tesla said in a filing with the Belgrade bourse.

Revenues from the sales of products and services reached 1.76 billion dinars in the first three months of 2017, up from 1.56 billion dinars a year earlier.

The airport operator said last month it targeted passenger traffic of 5.5 million in 2017.

The airport serviced record-high 955,988 passengers in the first quarter of 2017, up 10% year-on-year.

The Serbian government owns the entire capital of Aerodrom Nikola Tesla. Earlier this month, it extended the deadline for submitting non-binding offers in the tender for awarding a 25-year concession contract for operating Belgrade airport to May 30 from May 25.

Big problem for Tesla airport is ,that it has no city rail or metro connection.I think if any of possible bider for a airport concession includes a railway connection to a city center would mean a signicant advantage to win a concession!
There is only 3 km distance from the airport building, to nearby city rail line and station "Zemun" city rail named as "BG VOZ" or (BG Train) ,such a short distance to connect the airport to a mass transit existing line.

e-Zemun
Belgrade city rail BG VOZ line so close to the airport building but yet so far.

On this map you can see the position of City rail line to nerby airport, and existing rail road connection deep under the city center, as well as main railway station.

Belgrade Airport completes terminal overhaul

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has completed a multi million euro upgrade of its Terminal 1 building which includes the addition of 33 check-in desks, eleven retail desks, commercial areas, oversized baggage check-in, a new baggage sorting facility and an additional 475 square metres of space. This will result in an increase in capacity from the current 5.5 million passengers per year to seven million. Last Friday, the airport put into use one of the overhauled areas for check-in purposes (dubbed Terminal 2b, check-in 400), which was formerly used as the arrivals area for domestic flights. On the other hand, the finishing touches for the remaining upgraded facilities within Terminal 1, which will also feature open views of the apron, are being carried out. The official opening of the overhauled terminal is expected in the coming weeks. The upgraded facilities also feature five self check-in desks and two self bag drop-off points, the latter being situated in the check-in area 600. While not officially confirmed, it is believed that the overhauled terminal will be used by foreign carriers, while Air Serbia and Etihad Airways Partners would gain exclusive use of Terminal 2.

General Manager, Saša Vlaisavljević, previously noted that the ongoing expansion and overhaul of the airport's facilities will have it fully prepared to welcome its second long haul flight, from Beijing, which is to launch during the third quarter of the year. "We are expanding capacity because there is a real need for it. Once the reconstruction of Terminal 1 is completed, we will have 33 new check-in desks, including 28 standard ones and five self check-in counters for passengers to use at their disposal. The new check-in desks will be connected to the new baggage sorting facility". The airport had previously overhauled the first floor of the Terminal 1 building and put it into use in 2015.

Further investment into Terminal 1 is expected by the end of the year. The airport plans to begin construction of an open air observation deck, which should be located within the premises of the T1 building, Furthermore, it will complete the overhaul of its "A" departure gates. Although the gates are jointly shared by both terminals, the "A" gates are considered to belong to T1 as they were part of the original building when it was opened 55 years ago. While almost all gates have been renovated, four remain untouched since the early 1980s. The project will include the overhaul of 2.640 square metres and the construction of an additional 6.360 square metres of space, which will take in 800 square metres of retail areas. The work will encompass the installation of five new jet bridges, with the last gate to cater for wide-body aircraft. Moreover, an additional two ground floor gates will be opened from which passengers will be bussed to their aircraft at remote parking positions. Meanwhile, the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) has completed tender procedures for the preparation of technical documentation for the construction of a four-level 75 metre new control tower. The project also includes the construction of a two-level flight control centre, which will be linked to the tower. SMATSA anticipates for construction to take three years to complete.

Hainan Airlines schedules Belgrade launch

Hainan Airlines will introduce flights between Beijing and Belgrade via Prague on September 15, with ticket sales to commence in the coming weeks. Flight HU7937 from Beijing via Prague will touch down in Belgrade at 09.20 local time, with the return journey scheduled for 11.10, each Monday and Friday. The airline will maintain flights with an Airbus A330-200/-300 aircraft depending on demand, but has also received approval to dispatch a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route if the need arises. China's largest private carrier is seeking regulatory approval for fifth freedom rights between Prague and Belgrade, which would allow it to sell tickets between the two capitals. Currently, Air Serbia maintains flights between the two cities ten times per week. If the existing schedule is sustained by both airlines, there will be a total of three daily flights on the Belgrade - Prague - Belgrade sectors each Monday and Friday. Hainan has also received approval to operate a third weekly flight to the Serbian capital if it wishes to do so.

Meanwhile, Belgrade Airport handled its second-millionth traveller of the year this Tuesday, the earliest it has done so since opening its doors more than half a century ago. The two millionth passenger passed through Serbia's busiest airport eleven days ahead of last year. As a result, it welcomed 194.875 travellers during the first two weeks of June and is on course to overtake both the record set for the month in 2015, as well as last year when there were 1.000 passengers less. Despite a fewer number of flights by Air Serbia this summer, which no longer maintains services to Istanbul, Warsaw, Kiev and Varna, foreign carriers, which are registering a significant increase in both passenger numbers and aircraft movements, are expected to push the airport to a record breaking year.

During 2017, both Transavia and Atlasglobal launched flights to the Serbian capital from Amsterdam and Istanbul respectively. The latter has boosted its operations from daily to ten weekly services due to strong demand. On the other hand, Wizz Air stationed its second aircraft in the city, launching four new routes. Furthermore, Greek leisure carrier Ellinair introduced new flights over the weekend, while Egyptian airline AlMasria Universal Airlines will introduce two weekly seasonal flights from Hurghada tomorrow, which will be run until the end of summer. Other notable changes include an additional six weekly flights by two Israeli carriers from Tel Aviv this summer, an extra three weekly services by Qatar Airways from Doha starting in September, as well as Air Serbia's new four weekly service to Venice which will be maintained during the winter season as well.
