Imports of vehicles on the increase this year

Imports of vehicles on the increase this year

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.p...this-year.html

Cambodia's imports of vehicles surged more than 60 percent in the first half of the year, Ministry of Commerce statistics show.

Imports of vehicles, including motorbikes and cars, totalled 335,131 units in the first six months, from 208,611 units in the period last year, the data shows.

Toyota (Cambodia) Company Chairman Kong Nuon said yesterday the firm’s imports had bounced back following a downturn caused by the March 11 earthquake in Japan.

“Year on year growth in demand from customers is high,” he said. “When the disaster happened in Japan, we didn’t have autos to supply our customers. Now, everything is back to normal.”

The company targets sales of more than 550 Toyota vehicles this year.

Phnom Penh’s motorbike dealers said they had also seen an increase in 2011.

“This year, I can sell 50 motorbikes a month, compared to 30 a month last year,” said Kim Chhay, owner of Kim Chhay Motorcycle Shop in 7 Makara district.

“Our business has been very good as the economy gets better, and Cambodian people earn plenty from their havest of crops such as rice, cassava and corn,” he said.

As of June, Cambodia had 1.49 million motorcycles and about 300,000 cars, buses and trucks, according to a report obtained from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport’s Overland Transport Department obtained by The Post yesterday.

It is nice to see progress, a strong sales means people is earning more.

But strong car sales does indicated there are more demand for roads, and the government must work hard to improve road conditions.

With the introduction of a $5000 electric car, there might be a huge rise.

Revving up: Demand for cars rising in Cambodia
Phnom Penh Post, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 12:00
Revving up

Vehicle imports to the Kingdom increased by more than 50 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2011, according to Ministry of Commerce statistics.
Imports of vehicles, including cars, motorbikes and bicycles, totalled 517,612 units between January and September, from 344,036 in the period last year, the data showed. As of September, the total value of vehicle imports stood at US$266 million, a 53.7 per cent year-on-year increase from $173.1 million according to the ministry.
Kong Putheara, director of statistics at the Ministry of Commerce, this week attributed the growth to the development of the economy and lack of automobile factories in the Kingdom.
“People’s demands are growing, but we are still undersupplied. We lack heavy industrial factories to produce vehicles to meet the demand,” he said, adding that he saw a dramatic rise agricultural vehicle imports. The majority of the vehicles were imported second-hand from Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Japan and United States, Kong Putheara said. Toyota (Cambodia) Company Chairman Kong Nuon said the firm’s imports in the first nine months of the year were similar to the same period in 2010. “I suspended purchase orders in April after the tsunami in Japan, but orders have finally increased again.”

No, we need a reliable public transport system, then get rid of bikes in the city center, we need to limited Tuk Tuk license, get rid of cars that are not roadworthy, heavily tax cars purchase, and high road use cost.

We also need car parks, lots of them. If you can not afford a car park, you can't afford a car.

The road expansion, etc can come later. Flyover didn't solve problem, as it is mostly drivers altitude that make the traffic so bad.

800 Toyota vehicles have been sold in Cambodia in 2012, up from 500 Toyata vehicles in 2011 and the target for 2013 is more than 1,000 Toyota vehicles ... very significant amount compared to the total number of vehicles imported in 2012 at about 2000 vehicles

Not to be outdone by Japanese Automobile giant, Worldwide Garage Co.Ltd., distributor of Great Wall Vehicle from China said Great Wall vehicles are a big hit in Cambodia to the point that Worldwide Garage is going to negotiate with Great Wall Automobile to set up the assembly line for Great Wall Vehicles in Cambodia in 2013, thanks to the growing demands since Jan 2010.

Even MR Asia (agent for Fort Motor) the growth of Ford Motor in Cambodia is rising at 15% a year ... but it can grow at the rate of 50% a year if they can find enough spare parts of Ford automobiles to meet the demands.

BTW, the demands of second handed vehicles in Cambodia is at 20000 Vehicles a year ... This has caused the rampage stealing of vehicles and smuggling across the border to meet the demands to the point that the neighbors have to set up the task forces run by Border patrol Police, Army and Marines to arrest those illegal automobile smuggling to Cambodia.

Car registration must be a joke here, if the origin of the car can not be trace, then it should not be allow to register, unregister vechilces on the road should be pull off the streets.

Definitely big and sick joke ... even after they have learnt that the cars to be registered has been stolen cars ... They just pretend to be oblivious that the cars to be registered are the stolen ones ... After all, they may even participate with this organized crimes by themselves ...
