CM: Kuching – Serian LRT under study
[I]March 19, 2017, Sunday Samuel Aubrey,

Quote:
KUCHING: A Light Rail Transit (LRT) system connecting Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions is not a far-fetched idea after all.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said yesterday the LRT system is being studied for inclusion in the public transport plan now being drafted by the state government to solve traffic congestion in these three divisions.

On how soon the plan will come into reality, Abang Johari who is also Finance Minister and Resource Planning and Environment Minister, said this will depend on the new financing model which he will announce next month.

“I will announce the new financing model next month, and we see how it goes (from there). I have my way, we (the government) have to be creative. I cannot rely on federal (funds) for this one, because if we wait but it (the fund) does not come, then it gets halted.

“We need to have a solution for that. I have a solution but I cannot reveal to you now,” he told a press conference after launching the [email protected] Muara Tuang housing project for civil servants at Jalan Muara Tuang near here yesterday.

He said the proposed LRT system will provide easy access for locals and tourists to destinations within the three divisions especially places of interests within the southern tourism corridor which stretches to Tanjong Datu.

Abang Johari, who also holds the portfolio as Minister of Housing and Urbanisation and Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, envisioned the LRT system to utilise the latest in information technology (IT), where users can use their gadgets to plan their movement.

Having said that, he asked for patience in making this plan a reality, and leave it to the qualified persons including Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation and Ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Sudarsono Osman to do the proper study first.

“Datu Sudarsono has the experience, he will plan it. This one is a continuous programme. I don’t know how long I will be the Chief Minister. Whoever becomes the CM after me, he will continue (this initiative).

“As the Chief Minister, you must have long term policies for the benefit of the people,” he said.

He also mentioned that he has instructed Sudarsono and the permanent secretary of Ministry of Resource Planning and Environment (Dr Wan Liz Osman Wan Omar) to work together in planning the public transport system.

He pointed out that if the matter is not resolved, it will turn into an issue against the government since development of new townships and housing areas have led to increase in traffic volume and this leads to road congestion.

“We have to find a solution. This will involve substantial amount of money. Therefore, we need to do early planning.

“A car journey should take 30 minutes to reach the Kuching city centre from Samarahan. Public transport must be efficient. Although we have the Rapid stage bus coming, but we must have other alternatives.

“Of course, some people say this is hard to achieve because our population is only over one million people. But over time, the population will be more,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Abang Johari mentioned that LRT which is a much more efficient public transport syatem could be the way forward for Sarawak.

“Nevermind that people may say this idea is ‘jauh pawe’ (far-fetched). But if we can do it, then why not? If this can benefit our people, why not do it,” he said.

Touch ’n Go to be used in sales and purchase medium nationwide
Friday, 14 July 2017

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Touch ’n Go Sdn Bhd will introduce a new digital platform which will be used in the sales and purchase medium nationwide in the next six months, in line with the move to further enhance cashless transactions at the community level.

Chief executive officer Syahrunizam Samsudin said the platform, currently named Touch’n Go e-Wallet, was undergoing several evaluation processes by Bank Negara before it could be introduced to the public.

“Our vision is to introduce this cashless payment system deeper at the community level, not just at the city centre or shopping malls, but also at retail outlets close to the community. In the next six months, we will be launching this platform and we will see the reaction from the users by then,” he told reporters at the Touch ‘n Go Aidilfitri open house here.

The pilot project for the platform was launched in Taman Tun Dr Ismail two months ago in collaboration with the resident association, along with retailers, restaurant operators and market traders, and the respond had been positive in terms of the system's stability and user-friendly function. — Bernama

Putrajaya to take over Penang ferry service for RM1
12 Jun 2017, PM 5:04

Quote:
Penang's iconic ferry service will be sold to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the federal government's public transportation agency for a token sum of RM1.

According to Star Online, Penang Port Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Seaport Terminal (Johor) Sdn Bhd which is linked to tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, would pay a large annual sum to Prasarana over the next few years in view that the ferry service was a loss-making business.

The report, quoting anonymous sources, stated that since the opening of the Penang Bridge in 1985, each ferry would have incurred a loss of at least RM700 for every trip.

The report also said that the transport ministry had refused Penang Port's proposal to scrap the vehicular ferry service within two or three years after the takeover.

"There are too much tourism and heritage value in Penang’s vehicular ferry service," the source reportedly said.

The Penang Port Commission (PPC), the regulator of Penang Port, told the daily that the deal had been finalised and was awaiting cabinet's approval.

"Most of the time, outstation cars wait for our ferries.

"Since visitors to Penang love taking the ferry so much, Prasarana will look into improving the experience for them," he said.

The report said that Penang Port's new owners hoped to list the company on the stock exchange, but was being held back by losses due to the ferry service.

Based on images posted on Prasarana's Facebook page for Penang Rapid, the ferry service would be called "rapidFerry".

Presently, Penang Port operates a fleet of seven ferries. The last two ferries were commissioned in 2002 while the two oldest two ferries were commissioned in 1975.

The ferry service has been in operation since 1920.
ISKANDAR, MALAYSIA — A cross-border MRT link that will connect Singapore and Johor Baru in Malaysia is slated to begin passenger service by the end of 2024, ministers from the two countries announced on Monday (July 31).

t was also announced that Singapore rail company SMRT and Malaysia’s metro operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad will be exploring having a joint venture, which is an operating company to help design, build, finance and operate the trains, tracks and systems for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

These were disclosed on Monday during the 13th meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia (JMCIM), held in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Baru. The committee was set up in 2007 as a collaboration between the two countries, and the meeting this round was co-chaired by Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.

The RTS Link will connect Woodlands in Singapore and Johor Baru via a high bridge across the Straits of Johor, with a connection to Singapore’s upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line.

Once the RTS Link starts passenger service, the Tebrau train service run by Malaysian railway operator KTM Berhad will cease operations.

The link is expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers per direction per hour.

On the operating company for the RTS Link, the panel said that it would be directly appointed for the first concession period.

Singapore and Malaysia will each be appointing an infrastructure company to fund, build, own, maintain and upgrade the civil infrastructure and stations within their own countries.

Earlier last year, it was reported that the link will adopt the systems of Singapore’s Thomson-East Coast Line, including its signalling system, communication system and integrated supervisory control system.

The terminus for Singapore’s side of the RTS Link will be at Woodlands North station, along the Thomson-East Coast Line. Malaysia has also chosen Bu kit Chagar in Johor Baru as its main terminal for the link.
