Populous builds thriller in Manila: world’s largest indoor arena


Construction has commenced on the world’s largest indoor arena in Manila, Philippines, designed by the Populous.
The ground breaking ceremony was held last week for the 50,000 seat indoor stadium at Ciudad de Victoria.
With a construction value of AUD $200M, the arena has been commissioned by the Philippine religion, Iglesia Ni Cristo (the Church of Christ) and will be complete in time for the Church’s Centennial Celebration in 2014.





Populous has designed the arena with engineers Buro Happold, and construction will be carried out by Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp.Project Director, Populous senior principal Andrew James, said:“The building’s capacity pushes the boundary of Arena design and will eventually establish itself as the world’s largest indoor arena. The form uses simple geometry to create an elegant appearance, while also giving the venue a powerful presence within its setting.”





The arena has been master planned to enable a further 50,000 people to gather at a “live site” outside the arena, to share in major events. While the arena will hold major church gatherings, it will also operate as a multi-use sports and concert venue, capable of holding a range of events, from boxing and basketball, to live music performances.

the roof will span some hundred and sixty(160) meters which is about one and a half of soccer pitches...

...the roof will contain 9,000 tons of steel works, all the steel works will brought here from outside of the Philippines probably from Korea, it will be assembled here at this particular site(ciudad de victoria) in bits and then will be erected upto its final position 60 meters upto the air from where we are now standing so about fifteen stories high and be a major building..

...the building will be founded on piles, piles are now being constructed, they will be taken down..so the building will be safely founded on pile construction,.
one of the biggest challenge we found on this particular project was designing for earthquake loads.. and we'll be designing this building for about a third of the deadload of the building, we will be designing for the horizontal loads for the building..

...the building will be fully airconditioned, it will be the average temperature with 25 degree centigrade which is world class standard for comfort..
i think its a fantastic team that we are involved in and we really look forward to making this a world class project.."

I don't know where "near Manila" is.

Quite a long way from central areas such as Intramuros.

The Arena will be about 8 miles north of the MRT North Avenue station.
But there will be no train connection and getting a jeepney from North Avenue to the Arena will take about 30 minutes.

A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable but burdensome possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth.

Are you insecure? For your information Cowboy Stadium has a capacity of 80,000+ but it's floor area is only 20.000 sq.m. While the Philippine Arena has a capacity of only 50,000+ but has a floor area of 36,000 sq.m. and a height of about 15 storeys. So PA has more space to move than Cowboy stadium which use to be the largest in the world. But still, it's an stadium and not arena. The way I look at it, you are insecure to INC.

Naming is stupid and arbitrary. But the point is...is that the projected Philippine Arena has no right calling itself the "World's largest domed arena" when in fact, just one of the others, the Georgia Dome (NOTICE "Dome" -- not arena or stadium or coliseum) can hold up to 80,000 for a major boxing match! So it is a big FAT LIE perpetrated by a so-called "church" nonetheless!!

Aside from Arena, INC is also building sports complex and stadium in the same area simultaneous with PA. It only means that arena and stadium are two different type. Put that in your mind.

Jeez, how dumb can some people be? Totally brainwashed by the Ka Manalos. In the bolded segment above, it is NOT granted. Indoor stadia are ARENAS; outdoor stadia are stadia. Which is why the Georgia Dome is BOTH an arena and a stadium. It says "Dome," doesn't it? And the Philippine Arena is going to be a domed structure, right? Where does it say that an "arena" only seats 55,000 and it becomes a stadium at 75,000 even though it is "domed" as the Philippine Arena is called? DUH!!

#2 - Re Madison Square Garden -- you forgot to mention that it's NOT SQUARE.

So how much have you given of your earnings to this medium-sized stadium? (Which is great for the Philippines, but please don't lie like nearly all the Phil. leaders.) No wonder I never trusted the INC before.
