✈ | ET* | Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ አየር መንገድ; የኢትዮጵያ? in short), formerly Ethiopian Air Lines, often referred to as simply Ethiopian, is an airline headquartered on the grounds of Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It serves as the country's flag carrier. The company is wholly owned by the Government of Ethiopia. Its hub is Bole International Airport, from which the airline serves a network of 64 international destinations and 16 domestic ones. The carrier flies to more destinations in Africa than any other airline.Likewise, it is one of the few Sub-Saharan profitable airlines, as well as one the fastest growing airlines in the industry. The airline's cargo division has been awarded The African Cargo Airline of the Year in early 2011.
Ethiopian is a member of the International Air Transport Association, and of the African Airlines Association since 1968. The airline does not currently participate in any airline alliance, yet it was accepted as a future Star Alliance member in late September 2010.

Ethiopian Airlines welcomes corporate travelers to GBTA 2011

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) extends a warm welcome to the corporate travelers attending the upcoming 2011 convention of the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA). Leading the delegation from ET is Mr. Kagnew Asfaw, Director of Sales & Services for the Americas.

“I look forward to meeting with GBTA members and suppliers in Denver. Ethiopian Airlines has so much to share with all the Travel Management companies and their customers,” said Asfaw. “In the past year we have had unparalleled success in the U.S. market, and our daily non-stop flight to Addis Ababa has dramatically increased our ability to provide fast convenient connecting service to destinations throughout Africa.”

ET introduced the new Boeing 777-LR – the aircraft with the greatest range in the world – in the U.S. market in December 2010. The introduction of the 777-LR allows non-stop service from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Addis Ababa (ADD), saving business and leisure travelers several hours of flying. The new planes feature an expanded business class cabin with individual reclining seats and new onboard entertainment options. The daily daylight departures are timed to allow for daylight arrivals and to connect with other ET flights serving the most destinations in Africa.

The Star Alliance announced the nomination of ET in late 2010. After a year of systems integration and coordination, full membership will be announced this fall. This will further increase the benefits available to the global business travelers. New frequent flyer program integration, lounge access and code sharing will be available to all.

“Our goal is for Ethiopian Airlines to become the business travelers’ first choice for any destination in Africa,” said Asfaw. “Ethiopian’s experience, technology, route system and fleet, coupled with the famous hospitality of the Ethiopian people, will provide the best business airline in Africa.”

Ethiopian’s Market Share in Africa to Grow 10 Fold by 2025
.

The Ethiopian Airlines said it was planning to increase its market share in Africa by ten folds in 2025 by raising the quality of its service and number of its aircraft.

Tewolde Gebre-Mariam, CEO of the airlines, said that Ethiopian would add 70 modern, fuel-saving aircraft to its fleet.

According to Tewolde, Ethiopian's annual income has now reached 1.6 billion dollars and the company was working to raise it to 10 billion dollars. The airline’s annual number of passengers is currently over three million, three times greater than the number of passengers over the last five years.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines said yesterday that it had signed Multi Crew Pilot Licence (MPL) training and consultative services agreement with the Canada-based FlightPath International.

According to the agreement 48 pilots will be trained for B737NGs and Bombardier Q-400 aircraft in the MPL programme. The first batch of trainees will start training at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy in October.

The MPL is a new pilot training and licensing system established in 2006 by the International Civil Aviation Organization to qualify first officers for airlines.

Ethiopian Honors 12 Pilots

Monday, 22 August 2011 15:34

The Ethiopian Aviation Academy has honored the latest batch of graduates from its Pilot training program on August 16, 2011. During the graduation ceremony held at the Ethiopian headquarters, Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam CEO of Ethiopian Airlines gave out diplomas and pilot wings to the graduates who have successfully completed the two years pilot training program. Achievement awards are also presented for top performing pilots.

The pilots have covered the commercial pilot training course which was given as classroom instructions for 695 hours and practical flight training both or single and multi - engine aircraft for 200 hours. The graduates have also attended simulator training for 60 hours and passed level 4 English proficiency assessments given by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The School has so far graduated 947 pilots since its inception in 1964 out of which 621 are Ethiopians and 325 are foreign nations from 37 different countries mainly from Africa and Middle East.

The academy has recently bought ten DA40NGS pilots training aircraft from Austrian Diamond Aircraft Manufacturing Company to enhance its pilot training and signed an MPL (Multi – Pilot Licensing) implementation consultancy agreement with FlightPath International Company based in Canada.

Ethiopian Airlines Pilot Training School has high tech equipment including the B737-700/800 as well as 767/757 simulators that provide training for its own pilots as well as pilots from different countries. The syllabi of the school are approved and accredited by Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Currently, 150 pilots are being trained in the school, out of which 144 are Ethiopians and 6 foreign nationals.

Nice thread.

I'm looking forward to see the Dreamliner in operation, but I fear that it will be further delayed.
