Ethiopian Airlines deepens business relationship with AVIAREPS
Published by Ozgur Tore
THURSDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2011 23:16
Ethiopian Airlines has again expressed its trust in General Sales Agent AVIAREPS, the world’s leading Aviation and Tourism representation company, with the Dutch team in Amsterdam becoming the latest AVIAREPS office to be named a representative of the East African carrier.

After successful cooperation in the European countries of Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland and various South American markets, it is now the turn of the AVIAREPS Netherlands office to steer Dutch travelers to the soon-to-be Star Alliance member. Sales, Marketing and Ticketing activities will be professionally handled from the AVIAREPS office which is located in close neighborhood to Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Currently passengers from the Netherlands can choose between convenient Ethiopian Airlines connections via either Brussels or Frankfurt, with Lufthansa feeder flights in place to Frankfurt. From both the Belgian capital and Germany’s leading international airport, the airline departs 5 times weekly to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, which also serves as a comfortable and convenient hub from which to connect to a 63 international destinations, among them 51 throughout the African continent.

With its modern fleet, proven safety record and vast network, Ethiopian Airlines is a leading African flagship carrier.

“Ethiopian Airlines is one of our long-term partners with continuous expansion of services and markets”, appraises Michael Gaebler, Chairman & CEO of AVIAREPS. “We are glad that our cooperation is carried further with our eager team in the Netherlands and I do see the best of opportunities to position Ethiopian Airlines as airline of choice with Dutch consumers.”

“After our successful cooperation in Belgium, it was a logical step to also rely on AVIAREPS’ strength in the Netherlands”, states Tadesse Adane, Area Manager Benelux for Ethiopian Airlines. “Ethiopian Airlines has huge potential by providing an excellent product and vast African route network and we are convinced that the synergies in the whole Benelux area will be used to the best.

Does anyone here have more info on these Ethiopian flights to Madrid, if they were any succesful (it seems not, at any rate), why did ET chose to fly to Madrid and when they did quit flying the route ?

Ethiopian Airlines aims to become the largest & most profitable carrier in Africa by 2025

Ethiopian Boeing 777-200LR
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian Airlines is one of the largest and most profitable carriers in Africa. It has 34 aircraft on order, including 10 B787-8s with a network of 56 international destinations and 17 codeshare partners.

It plans to join Star Alliance and in 2010 had an operating profit of ETB1.6 billion (USD92 million). Ethiopianhas forged a successful path for its expansion plans and has come a long way since its beginnings as a joint venture between the Ethiopian Government and Trans World Airlines.

The carrier has set an ambitious, but realistic, 15-year strategic plan that includes becoming the single largest airline in Africa. It intends to generate revenues of ETB171 billion (USD10 billion) per year, acquire a fleet of 70 aircraft and improve its Skytrax customer service ranking from three to four stars.

If successful, the plan would make Ethiopian Airlines the largest and most profitable carrier in Africa.

African airlines aim to reap benefits via improved safety and service
Gavin du Venage

Nov 9, 2011

From cows on the runway to regional wars, the hazards that face African airlines are many. But a few are overcoming these obstacles to make the continent more connected than ever.

Building Brics
Emerging giants
Keep pace with the emerging economic powerhouses Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa Learn more
The past year has been especially difficult for airlines. The Arab Spring in North Africa and pirates off the Kenyan coast have had a severe impact on tourism, the lifeblood of the aviation industry.

Add to this the doleful contention by the International Air Transport Association (Iata) that the accident rate on the continent is 12 times the global norm, and it appears African travellers must be a hardy lot. But some airlines have evaded the dismal reputation to help build a link from the traditionally neglected continent to the rest of the world.

"African economic growth has been high and stable during the last decade," says Andy Gordon, a market forecast director for Airbus.

As a result, Airbus expects African air traffic to increase by 6.5 per cent annually between now and 2020, against a global figure of 5.4 per cent, says Mr Gordon. From 2021 to 2030, Africa's air traffic should rise by 4.9 per cent a year, against 4.3 per cent for the world as a whole.

With competitors such as Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways and a host of European carriers piling in to take advantage of the new-found desire for African travel, local airlines are having to raise their game.

Kenya Airways is one of the African carriers to have taken on this challenge. The airline flies to 55 cities worldwide, including 45 in Africa.

It flew 11 per cent more passengers between Europe and Africa last year compared with the year before, and its Middle East and Far East business increased by almost 20 per cent over that period, the airline's figures show. It plans to increase destinations by 60 per cent by 2015, and triple its fleet to 107 aircraft by 2020 so that it can fly to every country on the continent.

As a result, it is nipping at the heels of EgyptAir and South African Airways, the largest operators on the continent.

Ethiopian Airlines, the other East African player, is also expanding its operations. It ended last year with an operating profit of 1.6 billion birr (Dh341.2 million). The company has set itself the ambitious target of $10bn (Dh36.73bn) annual operating income, and plans to increase its fleet from 46 aircraft to 70.

It will be the first African airline to fly the new Boeing Dreamliner, which it expects to receive early next year. Ethiopian Airlines has 34 aircraft on order, including the Airbus A350, making it one of the largest-ever orders on the African continent. The big challenge now is to improve the continent's woeful aviation safety record. Iata notes that most of the accidents in Africa involve non-member airlines, often independent operators using elderly Soviet-era aircraft.

Come fly with us:
Industry Insights Take to the skies with The National as it charts the aviation industry. Learn More
"An accident rate in Africa that is over 12 times the global average is not acceptable. Improvements can happen," said Giovanni Bisignani, Iata's director general and chief executive, at the announcement of annual air accident rates earlier this year.

The economic benefits of expanding African aviation will be significant. The continent's airlines are expanding their routes to the north, and also linking up underserved African routes. Those wanting to fly from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to Abuja in Nigeria will no longer have to detour via Paris.

As for the cows on the runway, they may remain a problem.

Airbus Promoting A330 to Ethiopia's Flag Carrier
http://www.2merkato.com/20111219684/...opian-airlines

Quote:
A team from Airbus led by Mr. Francois Cognard, Vice President for sales, Middle East and North Africa, said to be promoting the Airbus A330 aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines, the flag carrier of Ethiopia, according to sources.
Aircraft manufacturers hold discussions with carriers as a matter of course said Cognard declining to comment on any ongoing negotiations between Airbus and Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to increase the number of its aircraft form 47 to 112 according to its Vision 2025 strategy. The airline will need to acquire a number of wide body aircraft including the Dreamliner aircraft that have been on order since 2005 according to an independent aviation analyst.

Managing different fleets of aircraft may be a challenging task but Ethiopian Airlines is considering the Airbus A330 as an option explained sources.
