52 candidates from abroad get into NIT in Trichy

As many as 52 students were on Wednesday admitted to NIT-Trichy under the Direct Admission of Students from Abroad (DASA) Scheme. A total of 314 have so far been admitted to the institution. "Most of them are from the UAE such as Sharjah and Dubai, and also from Malaysia and Singapore," dean Dr N Anantharaman (academic) told TOI.

The counselling for B Tech and M Tech admissions went through the "online choice filling" option and NIT Rourkela was the coordinating NIT this year for undergraduate programs under the Centralized Counselling (CCMT-2012). The CCMT linked the premium 20 NITs in the country though admissions were processed for all 30 NITs following the release of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) results in February this year.

School of Welding targets 16 training programmes

The School of Welding attached to Welding Research Institute (WRI) at BHEL here has set a target to complete 16 training programmes of five kinds: welding and inspection, certified welding inspectors, ultrasonic testing – level II, radiographic film interpretation, and NDT techniques, during 2012-13.

Already four programmes: two each in ‘welding and inspection’ and ‘certified welding inspectors’ have been completed.

Basic information

The former programme providing basic information about various welding processes, welding metallurgy, and inspection techniques benefits personnel from fabrication industries, automobile, power plant, ship building and a host of other fabrication sectors, while the latter is meant for those welding personnel who seek career as welding inspectors and those involved in quality control and quality assurance functions.

Focussing on International codes of construction, the ‘certified welding inspectors’ course equips participants to carry out inspection of weld in the fabrication of pressure vessels, structural, and piping. Over 4,000 inspectors have already benefitted by this course and are occupying key positions in the world, WRI sources said.

Likewise, the Ultrasonic Testing Level-II certification programme conforms to the requirements of American Society for Non Destructive Testing. Programmes in radiographic film interpretation and NDT Techniques are useful for quality professionals, designers, and manufacturing personnel.

The training workshop is equipped with facilities for SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) and SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) processes. The welding techniques and skills are taught for plates, pipes, and tubes in various positions. Welders are trained in variety of materials such as carbon steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels and non-ferrous materials.

Conducted 900 courses

Having conducted 900 welding and NDT courses benefitting 15,600 engineers/supervisors from private/ public sector organisations, and trained 4,800 welders under the technical skill development training programme since its inception in 1975, the School of Welding, officials said, was prepared to conduct tailor-made programmes specific to industries in welding and allied areas.

Almost every major industry in both public and private sectors has sent personnel for training at WRI that has been recognised by Indian Boiler Board to certify welders as per Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR).

The training programme conforms to codes such as ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), British Standards, and DIN (a German Institute for Standardisation) as well.

WRI has also been certified by American Welding Society as School Excelling through National Skills Standard Education (SENSE), and a participating organisation for SENSE Training and Testing Programme.

For Tamil Origin PIOs, NRIs and other PIOs & NRIs, this is the easiest route to get into NIT, Trichy. The entrance examination is also relatively much easier than AIEEE.

Anna University to become a single entity from August 1

Anna University will once again become a single affiliating university for engineering colleges all over the State from August 1.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced the date from which five regional Anna Universities of Technology (AUT) functioning in different parts of the State will be merged under Anna University, which was the state’s first technical university established in 1978.

The DMK regime had split the Anna University to create regional universities in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli from 2007 for various reasons such as decentralising administration of technical education and creating geographical proximity with affiliated engineering colleges. Anna University, the parent institution, was converted into a non-affiliating university, with some constituent colleges under it.

Policy decision

However, the present AIADMK government took a policy decision to merge the five regional universities and passed a bill to that effect in September 2011. Thereafter, it appointed a monitoring committee under senior civil servant Sheela Balakrishnan to study all aspects of the proposed merger, including the status of students, teachers, non-teaching staff, moveable and immoveable assets and presented a detailed report.

“Based on examination of this report, the Chief Minister ordered the merger of the five AUTs with Anna University, Chennai, and it will come into force from August 1,” an official press release said.

As a result of this move, 535 engineering colleges will be affiliated to Anna University, and 12 constituent colleges under Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Chennai and Madurai AUTs will become constituent colleges under it.

Departments of AUT, Chennai, will now come under Anna University. The departments of AUT, Tiruchi, will be merged to form one constituent college of Anna University based in Tiruchi. In respect of the departments in other AUTs, students would be attached to the respective zonal offices of Anna University.

Four zonal offices would function in the four cities other than Chennai for administrative convenience. These offices would monitor the functioning of constituent and affiliated colleges and also address the grievances of students in these institutions, the release said.

Scope for starting KV in railway workshop township bright

While there is still scope for a new Kendriya Vidyalaya to start functioning in the township of Golden Rock Workshop of Southern Railways from this academic year, the delay by a year in starting a Kendriya Vidyalaya in National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi (NIT-T) appears inevitable.

The Regional Office in Chennai has already completed the process of verifying the proposal of the Tiruchi Railway Division and submitted a report to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. The application was now in the list of “mature” proposals, N.R. Murali, Regional Commissioner, KVS, Chennai Region, said on Friday

Once the KVS receives the nod of Ministry of Human Resource Development, the school will start functioning. Even if the sanction order is received during August, the school can start functioning with temporary facilities readied by the Railways at the Golden Rock Workshop, Mr. Murali said, citing the start of a new KV during August at Neyveli last year.

The Southern Railway has provided an old school building for the temporary functioning of the proposed KV and has also earmarked 6.4 acres for the permanent campus at a short distance from the Tiruchi-Pudukottai national highway.

Though NIT-T has also provided buildings for functioning of Kendriya Vidhyalaya, it is understandably unable to finalise the proposal.

The MHRD is learnt to have advised the NIT-T to start the school in the civil mode, whereby the KVS will be required to incur the capital and recurring expenditure.

However, from the point of view of KVS, the NIT-T being an institute of higher learning, has to provide the capital and recurring expenditure by itself for the school, Mr. Murali said, referring to the instances of NITs in Silchar and Manipur starting KVs in their capacity as institutions of higher learning.

On the basis of the sanctions granted to the other NITs, the NIT-T is believed to be pursuing its case with the MHRD. However, even if it succeeds, the NIT-T can have a KV on its campus only from the next year, it is learnt.

Southern Railway has provided an old school building for the temporary functioning of the proposed KV and has also earmarked 6.4 acres for the permanent campus.

Students from diverse stations at National Institute of Technology - Trichy this year

Students from areas like Neyveli, Trichy and Namakkal have got admission in considerable numbers at the National Institute of Technology - Trichy (NIT-T) for this academic year, according to its dean (academic), Dr N Anantharaman.

Speaking to TOI on Sunday, he said that generally, students from the Chennai region used to garner a lion's share of the seats, but this year, students of Neyveli's Jawahar Higher Secondary School, Trichy's RSK Higher Secondary School and Namakkal's SKV Matriculation Higher Secondary School bucked that trend by getting admissions.

Admissions are strictly done by 'online choice filling' through a centralised counselling process and 50% of the 814 seats on offer in the undergraduate programmeme (both in engineering and architecture) are reserved under the home state quota (Tamil Nadu). A student's home state is where he completes his plus two board exam. In addition to this, there are a total of 109 seats reserved under DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) at NIT-Trichy and at the close of Sunday, 98 students had confirmed their acceptance.

Normally, schools like Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Dayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) Public School and Bala Vidya Mandir in the Chennai region would gain a majority of the admissions in the only NIT located in the state. Though rural schools in the rest of Tamil Nadu also have bright students, they could not successfully compete in the AIEEE exams, the parameter for admissions, due of lack of wider exposure and proficiency in the English language in which the entrance exam is conducted. "This is a welcome trend and more rural students must be brought into focus," said NIT-T director Dr Sundararajan.

Maintained and administered by the University itself. BIT was started by Barathidasan University and merged with AUT-T in 2007.

Thanks

btw, I knew that it started by Bharathidasan University b4 AUT-T comes in to picture...

But my question is how seat sharing will go...If it considered as Governement college, there won't be any Management seats available, so not much revenue to run the institution...I believe, it will be working as self financing mode as 50% goes to DOTE and remaining 50% filled by BHarathidasan University...

One of my cousin worked in this college as Lecturer long back, I don't know the seat sharing arrangement though...

No, BIT is funded by the govt but administered and managed by AUT-T. But BIM is fully funded by BDU university itself.

Yes, that is right. BIT campus will be a zonal center and constituent college of Anna University. I mentioned BIT because it was constituent college of BDU before AUT-T.

In what points to a divide within the IIM family, the new institutions are no longer hiding their unhappiness over the "discriminatory" and "elitist" attitude of the old IIMs towards them.

Despite their request, the six new Indian Institutes of Management or IIMs - in Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur and Raipur - are not part of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2012 preparation process; a decision that has not gone down well with them.

NIT-T conducts orientation for first year students

National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T) on Monday conducted an orientation programme for first year B.Tech/ B.Arch students, to familiarise them to the new environment.

Heads of 10 departments made presentations on the role of their respective departments in the campus life of students.

The new students were shown the central facilities in the campus.

A total of 594 B.Tech students and 35 B.Arch students attended the orientation programme.

Of them, 327 constituted students admitted from 50 per cent home state quota.

Against a total of 804 seats – 768 B.Tech and 46 B.Arch seats – 629 seats have been filled in three rounds and the remaining 195 seats are to be filled in subsequent rounds.

Allotment of seats in the fourth round for those in the waiting list will be made known by the evening of July 25, and the candidates will be admitted from July 26 to 30, according to N. Anantharaman, Dean – Academics, NIT-T.

The fifth and spot round will be conducted for admitting candidates to unfilled seats, he said.

Since last year, self-financed deemed universities could take part only in the spot round.

Vacancies arise during the course of counselling when students who are allotted seats in NITs choose to pursue their programmes in IITs or other institutions.

On Tuesday, internal sliding will be conducted exclusively for DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad), Dr. Anatharaman said.

These candidates are admitted based on their scores in Scholastic Aptitude Test conducted by the College Board in the U.S.

For the first time, the number of DASA students has exceeded 100.

This year, 101 students have been admitted against the accommodation capacity of 123, Dr. Anantharaman said.

WRI increases intake for its PG certificate programme

BHEL, Tiruchi, has enhanced intake for the one-year full-time PG certificate programme in ‘Welding and Quality Engineering’ being offered through its Welding Research Institute (WRI) from 30 to 35.

The flagship programme run by WRI in collaboration with PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, since 2008 encompasses three months of theory sessions at the college, and internship at WRI and fabrication shops in BHEL, Tiruchi, for the rest of the duration, to ensure high-level practical exposure to industry environment.

A major highlight of the one-year programme conceptualised in the context of global demand for quality welding professionals is the cent per cent placements every year with major fabrication industries.

The focus areas include welding engineering, non-destructive testing and quality control.

Candidates with B.E. degree in Mechanical, Production, Metallurgy, Automobile, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, and allied disciplines are admitted based on an entrance test.

The entrance test determines the knowledge of students in general science (Maths, Physics and Chemistry), strength of materials, thermodynamics, heat transfer, engineering drawing and machine elements, material science, and overview of manufacturing process.

According to R. Easwaran, General Manager, WRI and Labs, BHEL, Tiruchi, the course was started as part of the first phase of implementation of Centre of Excellence scheme for Advanced Fabrication Technology from 2007 to 2011.

The WRI, he said, was moving well in fulfilling the vision to become a world class research institute in the field of welding, fabrication and allied areas.

The Institute was recognised by the American Welding Society as an educational member; by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as a national research facility; and by Department of Science and Technology for training and certifying welders.

The WRI also enjoys the recognition of Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, National Institutes of Technology and the Anna University as a centre for doctoral research, Mr. Easwaran said.

I recently read about NIT Students' Face Book page for Freshers & Anti Ragging.

In our batch, my friend formed the Anti Ragging Committee and he was the President.

(Incidentally he was the one who ragged most no of students )
