I knew prostestants and catholics don't quite get along in Ireland, but it was quite a of a shock for me

Only in the North, its a lot less bad in the South and even in non-council estate neighbourhoods which are less segregated.

That wall in Derry is much less imposing than some in Belfast, such as this, photo from Ross on wikipedia;
