SAN FERNANDO, La Union – The provincial board of La Union unanimously approved on third and final reading during its session last week an ordinance declaring Iloko as an official language of the province.

The ordinance though does not aim to replace English and Filipino, but rather support the use of Iloko alongside them in a multilingual partnership.

Vice Gov. Aureo Nisce said La Union is the first province in the country that has a comprehensive ordinance protecting and revitalizing the native language.

“This Code will preserve our native dialect… Speak Iloko to know your heritage and it should be proper for the young generation to learn the native language,” Nisce said.

Nisce said the ordinance is fully supported by Gov. Manuel Ortega because Iloko is slowly deteriorating, especially in urban areas where Filipino and English dominate.

MA-CHO TEMPLE (Brief description)

In the Chinese hierarchy of folk deities, Ma-Cho (Matzu) is the powerful Queen of Heavens and protector of the sea. She is the patron saint of fishermen and overseas Chinese.

Legend says she was born a mortal named Lin Mo-liang (silent girl) sometime during the Northern Sung Dynasty (960-1127 A.D.) near Meizhou Bay in Fujian Province, China.

During her lifetime of only 28 years she was said to be exceptionally pure of spirit and compassionate. It is said that she had supernatural powers and performed miracles, subduing evil spirits and averting disasters at sea. She sacrificed her life while trying to save seafarers endangered by rough seas.

After her death, people began to pray to her for succor and good fortune. She has a huge following in mainland coastal areas. In Taiwan, where many Fujian folk migrated, she is worshipped by almost two-thirds of the population. March is the height of “Ma-cho Mania” in Taiwan, when her birthday is celebrated in over 500 Ma-Cho temples. The most famous of these ceremonies is the Ma-Cho procession or journey, known as Chin hsiang (“carrying the incense”).

In Macao and Fujian (China), Taiwan and the Ma-Cho Temples in La Union and Batangas, the goddess Ma-Cho is believed by millions of devotees to be ONE AND THE SAME as Our Lady of Caysasay. Today, the Filipino-Chinese Communities of Northern Luzon based in San Fernando City, La Union, come to visit her on yearly pilgrimage at her “Mother” shrine in Taal, Batangas bringing along the image of Mama Ma-Cho of the Ma-cho Temple. MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Textile Society holds it annual year-end bazaar Habi on Oct. 20-21 at the South Court, ground floor of the Power Plant Mall at Rockwell (beside the fountain).

Featuring Filipino weaves from north to south, the bazaar will have on sale abel blankets, bags, place mats and napkins from Ilocos; hablon, jusi, piña and sinamay from the Visayas; t’nalak from Lake Sebu; Yakan weaving; ready to wear apparel, fans, antique jewelry and other accessories.

Special features this year are pure silks from La Union, Tepina from Palawan, and casual dresses embroidered and embellished by T’boli women. There will also be limited pieces of handwoven pure cotton cloth.

As part of its participation in the ASEAN Traditional Textile Community, Habi features this year woven items from Laos: traditional textiles produced in the ateliers of Carol Cassidy.

Cassidy, who has been working with silk weavers in Laos since 1989, shares her experiences in preserving traditional weaving and promoting native silk products in a talk titled “Weaving Success in Southeast Asia: Carol Cassidy Silks” which will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Bernas Room of the Ateneo Law School beside the mall. Admission is free.

About the Province La Union was created by virtue of a “Superior Decreto” issued on March 2, 1850 by Governor General Narciso Zaldua Claveria out of nine towns of Pangasinan, three of Ilocos Sur and settlements of the Eastern Pais del Igorotes in the Cordilleras. Its creation as a province was formally approved by a Royal Decree issued by Queen Isabela of Spain on April 18, 1854. From its inception as a province up to the Second World War, La Union experienced transformations in the socio-cultural and politico-economic aspects. After the War, rehabilitation and reconstruction were done eventually propelling the province as the center of commerce and trade and the administrative center of Region I. About the Municipality Originally part of Pangasinan, the town of Naguilian is known for its basi (sugarcane wine) making industry. Its name is derived from the Iloko word “Nag-ili-a”, which means the place where people from other places come to stay. “Nag” is a prefix which denotes past action, “Ili” means town and “an” is a word which modifies the word “ili”. Putting the three together, it becomes “NAGILIAN”. This was later modified as “NAGUILIAN” Naguilian has an area of 8,740 hectares. It is bounded on the northwest by the City of San Fernando, on the Northeast by Bagulin, on the west by the town of Bauang, on the south by Aringay, on the southwest by Caba, on the Southeast by Sablan, Benguet and on the east by the town of Burgos.
