Surprisingly Greenland isn't launching supertalls in first tier cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tianjin) and even most second tier cities (Shenyang, Chongqing...) So weird.

It may have to do something with their (Greenland) perception of 'fair land value' maybe... the land in the 4 first tier cities, as well as in some boomtown cities like Chongqing, may be seen as way overpriced for a fair long term value from their point of view, while Wuhan, Nanjing etc offer 'reasonable cost and reasonable return' with less competition?

my guess would be cheaper. since it can buy rather cheap landprizes then build up and get much profit when the area besides the building develops. yet for shenzhen greenland didn't build because shenzhen's law made only locals be able to build, but since it was lifted greenland also showed up. if greenland also tries to get a plot in qianhai or another new area my theory may not be too far off.

edit: looks like NNShenzhen bet me too it with more information as well :P

I have also realized Greenland is mainly focus in second tier cities, I think they want these cities to become the top 5.

I think everybody knows why Chinese people like the height because its 666, very lucky!

I just saw this forum but I said for wuhan's new 707 m, this will be the first city in the world to have 3 megatalls!

Necessity isn't the point, profit is.
I find it very difficult to believe there really is demand for 5 or more 600m towers in Wuhan, or any other Chinese third tier city for that manner. No demand means no profit. These blind investors are in for a world of hurt.

other than Greenland the other megatalls are all in very early stages of development, none of these other than Greenland will finish before 2020 i think. if they do not rise all at the same time but have years between them the investors and developpers may see how vacancy rates and economy moves along with the time and they can get an idea of what they are getting in to. so if they start constructing they are pretty sure that they also make a profit, otherwise they wouldn't risk starting to build.

Is anyone knowing the name of the strange looking 400m+ tower in the middle of the model, between the 380m twins and the 666m tower?

Yes, I noticed that one as well. Is there a thread for that? It looks like a taller version of the Aspire Tower in Doha, Qatar.

yesterday i didn't find a thread for it. i think it is too conceptual and we have too few sources for a thread.

the design of the megatall is simple but very elegant. I hope we'll see something like that as final design.

Great rebuttal, the flaw in the original argument was if there was no demand for these buildings in 2013 therefore there would be no demand in the future either (post 2020). The Chinese are planning out 20 or more years into the future , as such they are making contingency plans . Who really knows what Wuhan will look like 25 years from now?

Are blimps common in China or did they just put it in there to spice up the picture?

(I love blimps.)

The mirror-clad tower on the left side of the pic posted by Zorg should be at least 900 mt!! Plus it's incredibly wide! Anyone knows the name of the project?
