There is a new article in this week's Crain's Chicago Business about the new zoning code. I don't have a subscription to Crain's. Does anybody else? I would love to read what they are saying about it. The article is titled "Do's and Don'ts" or something like that

I get daily links to Crain's articles emailed to me, but not necessarily all articles that appear in the newstand version. We get the newstand version in my office, but someone must have it in their office. If I get my hands on it, I'll at least give you an idea of what it says.

It's a very brief article and probably doesn't tell you any more than what you might have learned about the new zoning code from the Chicago skyscraper forums. Most of the information is actually in captions under 4 pictures accompanying the article, regarding 4 new elements of the code addressing: (1) blank walls (windows and doors must now comprise at least 17.7% of walls facing a sidewalk; (2) patio pits (sunken patios now must be built behind a property's required front-yard setback, rather than flush with the sidewalk); (3) open space (65 sq. feet of open space per unit now required, and parking lots don't count toward the requirement); (4) podium parking structures (not banned outright, but developers now limited to 1.1 parking spaces for every unit smaller than 1600 sq. ft.)
