Colorful Vietnam (September 2009)

In September 2009, me and two friends traveled north to south through Vietnam. These are some of the pictures I took, not necessarily urban, but I hope you enjoy them nonetheless!

1. Starting point was the capital, Hanoi. Here one of the bridges spanning the Red River.

2. Motorbikes.

3. Green wheels.

4. National pride.

5. New bicycle!

6. Fishing in the Red River.

7. Next destination was Ha Long Bay (imho. one of the natural wonders of the world!), including a visit to Thien Cung Cave.

8. A tiny floating fishing village, tucked away in one of the many hidden bays.

9. Local fauna

10. If you ever visit this place, be sure to overnight on a boat - it's a mesmerizing experience!

11. Next stop: the former emperial residence Hué. Here the Forbidden City and Citadel (with the famous flag tower).

12. Once again the flag tower, symbol for the (temporary) recapture of the city by the North Vietnamese during the Tet Offensive (1968).

13. An elephant in the Forbidden City.

14. Ancient gate and elephant.

15. Lotus flowers (the flowers are lovely, the seeds delicious!)

16. Destination number four was Nha Trang, a busy but cozy beach resort town.

17. With beautiful little fishing villages along the coastline.

18. Monsoon time.

19. Nha Trang skyline in the distance.

20. Old wooden suspension bridge across a small river: the inlands surrounding Nha Trang are a perfect place to go mountain biking or rafting.

21. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): time to go urban! This is Bui Vien Street, in the heart of the city's backpackers' district. Imagine being an electrician here!

22. Saigon traffic is famous, for all the wrong reasons.

image hosted on flickr

23. Motorbikes are ideal ...

24. ... not a guarantee for a fast ride ...

image hosted on flickr

25. ... but perfect for relaxing ...

image hosted on flickr

26. ... keeping an eye out ...

27. ... or moving stuff around.

28. Rickshaws waiting for customers.

29. Doing business

30. The colorful Ben Thanh Market, filled with fruits and vegetables ...

31. ... fresh fish ...

32. ... shellfish ...

33. ... and Halloween props

34. Fish that needs to be caught first, obviously.

35. Mmmm.... coco nuts...

37. Last stop: Mekong Delta. This is Vinh Long.

image hosted on flickr

38. A busy market place where life is dominated by water.

image hosted on flickr

39. Fresh haul of tobacco.

40. A Catholic church, a remnant from the French-colonial era.

41. Hello!!!

42. Hello again!!!

43. Hello again again!!!

44. Time to siesta.

45. An Binh Island in the heart of the delta, a tropical paradise!

46. Cham children in Chau Doc, near the Cambodian border.

47. The Cham are an Islamic minority zijn een Islamitische minderheid in Southern Vietnam and Cambodja, descendants of the once powerful empire of Champa.

Well, that's all, y'all!

Thank you, guys!

Vietnam is an absolutely amazing place to visit: gorgeous landscapes, lovely/lively cities, great culture and incredibly friendly people.
