yes. But buffer timing is very high... and running time is very high. It needs to be slashed to 4hrs 30min from present 6hrs and more.

Katpadi-Salem MEMU train service takes off - Report from Vellore

Steps will be taken to begin Katpadi-Villupuram service soon, says Minister

The much-awaited six-day-a-week Katpadi-Salem MEMU (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) train service was inaugurated by S. Jagathrakshakan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, at a function held at the Katpadi railway station here on Wednesday.

The Minister, along with Durai Murugan, Katpadi MLA and former Minister, and S. Anantharaman, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Chennai Division, flagged off the train on its inaugural run to Salem at 11.45 a.m. The inauguration of the service marks the fulfilment of the announcement made by the Railway Minister in the Railway Budget for 2010-11.

Mr. Jagathrakshakan said the Indian Railways provided excellent service by providing connectivity to several villages at a time when there were several villages in the country which were not connected by bus. The service provided by the Railways in India was unparalleled in the entire world, he said.

The Minister had a word of praise for the authorities of the Katpadi railway station for maintaining the station in a clean and neat manner. He said that he would convey to the Railway Minister the request of people of Vellore and Katpadi for the operation of additional trains between Katpadi and Chennai. Steps would be taken to begin the Katpadi-Villupuram train service, announced in the Railway Budget for 2012-13, soon. Delay in land acquisition was delaying the implementation of the project of laying a new rail route from Tindivanam to Nagari via Arcot and Ranipet, he said.

Mr. Durai Murugan urged the Railways to start a train service between Katpadi and Chengalpattu via Arakkonam and Kancheepuram. He also requested the Railways to expedite the construction of the railway portion of the road overbridge across the broad gauge railway track in Karnambut near Katpadi. The construction of the State Highways portion of the road overbridge has been completed and only the railway portion remained to be built, he said.

Mr. Anantharaman said the fare for the Katpadi-Salem MEMU service is just Rs.29 and very cheap compared to the bus fare between Vellore and Salem, which is Rs.129. At a given time, 1,200 to 2,000 passengers can travel in this train, which has been provided with toilet and water facilities. A total of 135 trains halted at the Katpadi station every day and about 10,000 passengers boarded or alighted from these trains . Passenger traffic increased by 9 % and income by 10 % in the Chennai division, compared to last year, he said.

Mr. Anantharaman said a four-hour gap in the operation of trains is required every day to facilitate the proper maintenance of the railway track. This is the reason for the inability of the Railways to operate additional trains. However, the Railways is trying to overcome this problem, he said.

R. Gandhi and J. Hassain, former MLAs from Ranipet, spoke. Usha Venugopal, ADRM, Chennai Division, proposed a vote of thanks.

Train timings

The regular service in both directions would begin on Thursday. Train No.66019 (Katpadi-Salem MEMU passenger) would depart at Katpadi at 5.45 a.m. and arrive at Salem junction at 11.45 a.m. after stopping at 27 stations en route. In the return direction, Train No.66020 (Salem-Katpadi MEMU passenger) would leave Salem at 3.30 p.m. and arrive at Katpadi at 9.50 p.m. The trains would run on all days a week except Saturday

Katpadi-Salem passenger train begins service-Report from Salem

It will connect all smaller stations in the busy sector

The much-awaited Katpadi-Salem passenger train that began its service three days behind its scheduled inaugural run, thanks to a political controversy, chucked in to the Salem Railway Junction at 4.45 p.m. to a warm welcome by passengers and rail staff here on Wednesday.

The train was flagged off at Katpadi in the morning by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Arakkonam MP S. Jagatrakshakan.

The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) service scheduled to be flagged off on March 18 from Katpadi Junction was cancelled at the last minute due to “administrative reasons.”

Railway sources, however, claimed that the train was cancelled following objections raised by the Union Minister, who claimed that he was not invited. As per the first invitation, State Health Minister and Vellore MLA V.S. Vijay was to inaugurate the service.

But since Mr. Jagatrakshakan under whose constituency Katpadi Junction falls, resented it, the Railway Board cancelled the inauguration. A team of senior officials from Southern Railways met the Minister and carried out the damage control exercise seeking his appointment for the rescheduled inauguration of the train service on March 21.

The Minister obliged them and accordingly flagged off the train at Katpadi at 10.50 a.m. The train (66019/66020) will connect all smaller stations that are located in the busy upcountry sector hitherto not served by long distance express trains. The train would run on all days a week barring Saturday

Buses introduced on four new routes

State Highways and Minor Ports Minister K. Palanisamy flagged off four new bus services in the district on Sunday.

The new routes were Omalur – Bommidi, Nangavalli to Magudanchavadi, Erode and Coimbatore.

Mr. Palanisamy said that the induction of 464 buses of State Transport Corporation by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa would benefit the people in the State.

He added that the new routes would meet the long-pending demands of the people and benefit them.

Under the MLA Local Area Development fund, a sum of Rs. 4.75 lakh has been sanctioned for construction of a Public Distribution System outlet at Vanavasi.

A community hall is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 lakh at Nangavalli and would be put to public use at the earliest, the Minister added.

MP S. Semmalai, MLA C. Krishnan, District Revenue Officer N. Prasanna Venkatesan, Revenue Divisional Officer S. Suryaprakash, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Salem) Ganesan and other officials participated in the function that had been organised in connection with the inauguration of the bus services.

Four new bus routes are

1. Omalur - Bommidi via Danishpet (Town bus)
2. Nangavalli - Magudanchavadi via Elampillai (Town bus)
3. Nangavalli - Erode via Edappadi
4. Nangavalli - Coimbatore via Edappadi

Our district minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy is concentrating only on the western side of the district from the day one (like Edappadi ring road etc). The ROBs/RUBs at Anaimedu, Mulluvadi Gate, Leighb Bazaar were allotted during the previous DMK regime itself. AFAIK he does not bring any big project for the city till now.

First he should have introduced some buses for Salem city routes.

Mr.Ganesan please look into the pathetic condition of city buses and introduce some new routes.

I agree partially with you Arun Kumar.

Yes the SH minister is concentrating only on Eddapadi since he is from that town and doesn't know much about the city. Only of the person who residing inside the city will take some initiatives on city needs.

The ROB's were just in talking mode during last DMK rule. But it got approval and found place in policy note and special annoucement only in this new gvt. But we have to wait and see how fast they are going to execute those ROB.

If this SH minister needs to do some good thing for the city, he should get special approval for converting 70KM approx arterial road in the city to 4-lane, median, parking, bus stop, walkway, sign boards, pedestrian crossing, uniform traffic signals concept etc.,

1. Pannagadu-Veeranam via Shevapet Market, Town RS road - 15KM
2. Narasothipatti-Ayyodhiyapatinam via Sundar lodge, Miltary road - 18KM
3. Kannakurichi Yercaud foot hills to Seelanaickenpatti with alternate Trichy road - 13KM
4. Salem Jn - Yercaud foot hills via Sarada col road, Hasthampati, Central Jail - 11KM
5. Redipatti-Uthamasolapuram via Salem Jn, T. bye-pass, 3 roads, Neithimedu - 12KM

This 70KM can be done SH dept itself.

- 20KM Salem bye-pass upgradation in co-operation with NHAI
- New 65KM city ring road with co-operation with NHAI

acheiving this only can make him as some one who did good for the city otherwise.. we need to him or we have to .... and no hope on the new mayor.

Good to see Nangavalli-Coimbatore bus.. It will go via Vanavasi, Jalakandapuram, Eddapadi, Kumarapalayam, Bhavani. Have to wait and see whether it goes via Erode or on NH-47 bye-pass.

After Attur and Mettur, Nangavali might be the third place to direct connection to Coimbatore. Hope they introduce Omalur-Coimbatore, Yercaud-Coimbatore, Gangavali-Coimbatore in future.

Arul, it was mentioned in Dina Thanthi that the Nangavalli - Coimbatore bus will go via Vanavasi, Jalakandapuram, Edappadi, Kumarapalayam, Lakshmi Nagar (Bhavani bypass), Perundurai, Avinashi. So it seems the bus will take NH 47 to reach Perundurai and not via Erode.

Also I have seen 2 more new buses from Pappireddypatti - Coimbatore and Pappireddypatti - Tirupur via Salem.

Good to see many new routes to Coimbatore/Tirupur.
