Hi, here are some snaps of the first part of my summer holiday in July to the Western Balkans, the small but beautiful nation of Montenegro.

After flying to dubrovnik in Croatia, it is but a short drive to the Montenegrin border and from there we take a short ferry trip across the mouth of the Bay of Kotor which will be our base for the week.

Next day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kotor, set in a secluded arm of the bay, the old town is a major staging post for cruise ships and yachts.

Once over the top the scenery changes and we soon arrive in the village of Njegusi, known in Montenegro for its ham and cheese.

Then after a nice drive through the mountains we descend into The historic heart of the Montenegrin nation. The old royal capital of Cetinje is little more than a large village but is home to former embassies, parliament, monastery and other trappings of its former status.

After our brief lunch stop here we headed down to the coast and caught the first glimpse of the fishing village of Sveti Stefan. Joined to the mainland by just a spit of land, the presque-ile was converted to a luxury resort in the 1950s before closing with the tourism crash that accompanied the early 90s Yugoslav wars of succession.

We meander down to the coast, past the resort of Budva and hit the beach at Sveti Stefan. Disappointingly the village itself is now only accessible by guests staying there

But there were enough good views and enough clear water to fill a couple of afternoons sunbathing

On to the small but beautifully preserved Venetian naval town of Perast, located directly opposite the opening of Kotor Bay a few km from Kotor town.

Traffic is restricted in The town, You have to park at the edge where the parking attendants ride Segways!

Most of these churches and „Venetian“ towns are in fact heritage of once thriving but today vanished Croats of Boka Kotorska. Since we had to give it up, at least it's good to see it ended up in the hands of Montenegrins who are becoming our best pals as we speak
