1. It's a "historic" tourist trolley
2. It's a US-style streetcar

But will it stay as a faux-historic trolley? The second blurb says new vehicles as part of the funding.

I agree about the silliness of those "historic" trolleys. Get a real modern streetcar instead and run it as real transit. Unless it is a stepping stone or on a route that will get heavily used by tourists (and locals).
Stockholm had a historic tram line going to an island with plenty of major tourist spots for about 15 years (new-built tracks but real old trams), then it got extended to a better DT end and new modern vehicles. The historic trams still run in summer as a tourist thing. But having fake historic trams? why oh why not show people that trams are a modern transit option?

Charlotte opens its first streetcar service in 77 years
July 14, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Reuters) - Charlotte, one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. South, launched its first streetcar service in 77 years on Tuesday, joining a host of American cities that hope to boost economic growth with new versions of an old mode of public transit.

Riders began using Charlotte’s CityLYNX Gold Line at 1 p.m., a few hours after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the North Carolina city’s downtown transit center.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, a former Charlotte mayor, said he expects business owners and developers to invest along the route

Is the Gold line built to a standard so that it can handle modern LRVs? I.e. will it be possible to run real trams on it instead of th efake-historic ones when the line is extended and demand builds for it to be focused on transit instead of on being sort of a destination itself?

Also: any plans for extending it? say to the amtrak station?

The long term plan is to actually relocate the amtrak station into uptown when they build (if they ever build) Gateway station. Gateway would serve the streetcar line phase 2 extension, amtrak, future SEHSR network and also commuter rail to potentially Gastonia in the west and North Mecklenburg. Just have to secure funding first, haha.

Charlotte mulls light rail expansion
Thursday, August 06, 2015

AN initial public consultation will begin on August 11 on proposals to expand the light rail network in Charlotte, the largest city in the US state of North Carolina

Charlotte Area Rapid Transit (CATS) is seeking feedback on plans for the 21.7km Lynx Silver Line, which would link the city centre with the suburb of Matthews, which has a population of around 27,000

Its temporary. The plans are when the next extension is finished in 2019, they will order modern Streetcars.

I'm surprised they get any funding at all from the feds because those trolleys certainly don't look wheelchair accessible to me and I thought that was mandatory on any project that got federal funding.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Construction likely to begin in 2014, will be 12000 feet runway, and will "allow flights to the Pacific Rim and deep into Europe", and the new runway will be used as a noise abatement runway. Will be CLT's fourth parallel runway.

The airport has long planned to build a new international concourse on the surface parking lots for rental cars, just north of Concourse A. Orr said that project will be built when there is demand.

The airport plans to build a small portion of that new international concourse, which would be initially used for domestic flights by Delta, United and Southwest. The four new satellite gates would be connected to the main terminal by a new walkway."

That's nice, but this is thread about public transport, where generally we are excluding developments in airports. For Aviation section, see here:

CATS and Charlotte Douglas Airport are a department in the city of Charlotte. Both deal with public transportation.
Also at the airport is Charlotte Regional Intermodal Facility at CLT.
