WA's answer to the VIC thread! There's less to choose from, but still some nice little towns on offer

Great thread Spare Towel, love the old buildings.

I noticed driving north through the wheatbelt a lot are abandoned now and falling to bits though, wonder what will happen with them.

Yeah, so many once prosperous townships have almost completely vanished. At its peak, Menzies (728 km NE of Perth) had a population of approximately 10,000. According to the 2006 census it is now home to 52 people.

"Lake Ballard is the site of Antony Gormley's (2002) mesmeric installation "Inside Australia". The work was comissioned to mark the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Perth International Arts Festival in 2003. It consists of 51 sculptures, derived from laser scans of the inhabitants of Menzies. The scans, used to map the body in three dimensions produce cross sections which were reduced by two thirds, to create an "insider". The figures are cast in an alloy containing molybdenum, vanadium and titanium, which metals are all found in the Archaean rock of Western Australia. The sculptures are placed on an area of about 10 square km on the lake."

I read somewhere that the large gaps between buildings were intentional to avoid a fire of London effect

When I went to the goldfields I was surprised to learn about some of the towns that existed during the gold rush, but have since completly dissapeared.
Broad Arrow and Kanowna for example, used to have 10,000+ people, stock exchanges, and regular rail services to Kalgoorle. Now there is nothing but maybe a grotty old pub at Broad Arrow.

Menzies is one of the most depressing towns I have ever been to, but the lake/sculptures near the town were amazing.

Those buildings in Coolgardie are stunning, especially when you consider the setting, the town is in the middle of nowhere.

I think some of those pubs in Boulder were irreparably damaged in the Kalgoorlie earthquake recently and taken down?
