Jupiter is the end of the Miami/South Florida metro area.

There is a massive Indian reservation just northwest of Tulsa.

Sorry for the delay in the maps, I've been working a lot on the Pearl River Delta. It will be done soon.

In the mean time, up next is the 'City of Columns', and just across the Gulf, (according to Forbes) America's cleanest city

Havana, Cuba
Metro Population: 2,141,993

Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach, FL

Miami City Population: 399,457
Fort Lauderdale City Population: 165,521
MSA Population: 5,564,635

Good news - the Pearl River Delta is very nearly complete, expect to see that within the next day or so, along with another surprise

In the mean time, some more maps:

Next, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and the home of North America's largest mall

Cairns, Australia
Metro Population: 150,920

Edmonton, AB
City Population: 730,372
Metro Population: 1,034,945

Interesting to compare Cairns and Havana on the same page. 150.000 vs 2.142.000 (factor 14 difference) inhabitants, but the urban area footprint differs maybe only by a factor 2 or 3.

Not to mention the difference between Havana and Miami!

what will happen with the metro area of Miami once it's all filled up ?
as far as i understand there are some building restrictions, also visible on the map you showed above (clear border between build up area to the right and swamps on the left)

It just keeps spreading north. Even north of the area on the map it's very built up along the entire coast. Then that blends into the Orlando area two hours to the northwest. Florida is really running out of huge empty areas in the circle that goes from Orlando through Tampa, southwest Florida, Miami and then back up to Orlando.

A lot of infill development and as you can see now in Miami, they're building up now - lots of skyscrapers in South Florida's future.

Amsterdam City Population: 780,152

The Hague City Population: 500,000

Wow, cool to see the Randstad on the same scale. Seems pretty spread out.

You can clearly see the strict planning policies in The Netherlands: areas around cities have been purposefully kept undeveloped so that cities did not grow attached. Other places, like Hoorn, Almere, Hoofddorp, Zoetermeer, Purmerend, Hellevoetsluis, Nieuwegein were specifically built out to take pressure off the bigger cities.

It makes it really hard though to define a metro area. Whenever you include the next city, it makes sense to include the next next one. Also, there is not really one dominant city. Amsterdam is somewhat dominant, especially for international business, finance and culture, but The hague (government), Rotterdam (logistics and industry), Utrecht (distribution, retail hq's, conventions) are all dominant in their own field as well.

Especially to the south and the east this development pattern continues to include cities like Arnhem/Nijmegen and Breda/Tilburg/'s-Hertogenbosch/Eindhoven (not included on this map).

Well gentlemen, I told you it was coming, and here it is. For super wide screens only. After 2 weeks work, I bring to you the powerhouse of southern China, the mighty

Pearl River Delta, People's Republic of China
Guangzhou City Population: 12,700,800
Shenzhen City Population: 10,357,938
Hong Kong City Population: 7,061,200
Dongguan City Population: 8,220,237
Huizhou City Population: 4,597,002
Foshan City Population: 7,194,311
Macau City Population: 544,600
Pearl River Delta Conurbation: 63,724,157 - 120,000,000 (varying statistics)

notes: I did my best to include every sizeable piece of urbanity in the region. There are thousands upon thousands of tiny settlements in the Delta region that I couldn't possibly include, but most of the areas worth mentioning are covered. Please appreciate this map took me many hours to complete, so while it may look pretty to you, I am glad to see the back of it :P

@ the spliff fairy

I would like to nominate the Yangtze River Delta for that title in about 5 years.

It would be interesting how YRD would look compared to PRD in terms of urban area integration.
