One downside of incorporating an old facade into the design of a new skyscraper (such a process is called "facadism") is that the windows of an old (demolished) building's facade and the floor levels of a new building may not line up with each other very well.

Any other downsides to facadism?

At this point facadism is the best option we have to balance new development and retaining heritage architecture. The issue is finding an architect willing to integrate the buildings nicely enough.

I think there have got to be some examples of skyscrapers whose designs involve the floors of an old building and the new skyscraper's floors not matching up with each other. (This is close to what I mentioned earlier.)
