If you try to remove certain vignettes after they expired, sometimes they become sticky and it takes a bit of work to clean the inside of the windshield without scratching it.

Swiss vignettes, if left many months, are the worse to remove, because they are designed in a way to be "irrecoverable" and "untransferable" to other cars.

I even don't want to remove my expired vignettes. They are memories of my trips...

The bulgarian vignettes aren't untransferable, and you can actually remove them quite easily, and for that reason, they write the number of the car on it:

In this example, it's CA 1487 HP.

"A bit of work"... that's a good example of understatement

It is not advisable to do that, it can be punished if you have too much invalid stickers.
I don't like stickers at all because they obscure clear view, so I put my yearly vignette behind back mirror and I remove other vignettes as soon as they become invalid.

In Switzerland, when presenting your vehicle at the compulsory technical inspection, you can be requested to remove outdated vignettes if the inspector considers them "too obstructive" on the windshield.
In this case, you have to sign an electronic device to confirm that you will do it "soon", so scratching on-the-spot is not required for having your vehicle pass the inspection.

In Greece, it seems we are lucky. At the moment we have only the annual road tax sticker to put on the windscreen. Please note that the empty space on the stick is used in order to put the car plate number that is separately printed on the road tax invoice received by the Tax Office.

However, if anyone does not put away older stickers and has quite an old car, this is a sample of how your windscreen is like.

I just remove unvalide stickers, otherwise I wouldn´t have enough space on my windscreen.
Just valid stickers actually on my window: A, D, SLO permanent, SK, CZ semipermanent and the electronic toll collector for DK, S and N.

And yes, there´s also toll in DK, S and N on special sections: DK = because of the bridges, S = valid for bridge linking S and DK and bridge linking S and N and N = all the toll roads in N

While we're on the topic of windscreen stickers (mainly toll vignettes) in Europe I have a question regarding the use of vignette stickers on rental cars.

Suppose I fly from the USA to Munich and rent a car there to drive south to Ljubljana by way of the autobahn including the Karavanke Tunnel, the two-lane tunnel that connects Austria with Slovenia (a separate toll is required for the tunnel from what I understand). As both Austria and Slovenia require vignettes in order to use their expressway networks and the vignettes are the sticker type would these vignette stickers be allowed on a rental car?

From reading the posts on this thread I understand that certain countries' vignette stickers are difficult to remove once applied. How would the vignette stickers come off before you return the rental car?

Vignette stickers are allowed and required on rental cars, if you drive on motorways. If it isn't already on the car, you have to buy it yourself, and you don't have to remove it.

^ I imagine if there is an annual sticker for the country you rent from it would already have one, it would make more sense otherwise there could be fines to chase up. Not sure how it would work in your example if the vignette is still valid for a while after you return it.
