Do you know which side of the square is shown in the picture above? The number of windows is different to the earlier photograph. Have the houses been altered by the University?

Sorry, I think that the old print should have accompanied this photo:

( The same side of the square as the sports centre- it appears that a couple of doors have been removed and replaced by windows)

I thought that. . . but in the picture there seems to be one less window than the photograph. Anyway, it's a beautiful square.

Today I visited Croxteth Hall which in the West Derby, L12 area of the city, and which is taking part in the 'Heritage Open Days' this week.

The Hall ,and its very substantial land/grounds, was home to the Molyneux family - the Earls of Sefton until 1972 when it was handed over to the city council.

The first building was constructed in 1575, but underwent additions and extensions in Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne styles. The current, main West Facade and entrance was built in 1702.

Queen Victoria stayed in the house in 1851 during a visit to Liverpool.

The house is grade 11 listed. The parkland extends to 500 acres and includes various outbuildings, cottages, stables, a walled kitchen garden, a farm, water courses, woodlands.....:

Is the city named after the bird "liver"?

The origins of the name Liverpool and of its symbol The Liver Bird are not clear-cut and obvious. There have been many suggestions as to the origins of both.

It seems the most likely origin of the name Liverpool is derived from the Welsh language: Llif meant flood, and was the common word used to describe The Atlantic ocean; pwll meant pool or inlet.

As for the bird. It is said that a bird - with a sprig of broom in its beak - was first used on the city's seal in 1350. King John gave the city its first charter in 1207, and his patron saint, St John, was represented by an eagle; and broom is associated with The Plantagenets (his royal line).

Others have suggested it is a cormorant - which are still many in number over the river to this day?

Glad you like the pictures.

The city's 'Heritage Open Days' continue. Today I visited The Ancient Chapel of Toxteth - reportedly the oldest remaining dissenting place of worship in the U.K.

I then visited All Saints Church in the Edge Hill area of the city; & which sits on its second highest hill - and allows great views once you have ascended the tower.

Then I visited the Church of St John The Baptist in the Tuebrook area of the city. It is a fabulous 'English Gothic' creation:

The Ancient chapel of Toxteth ( Unitarian). Founded in 1611 as a school, and in 1618 as a chapel:

Many of the city's Unitarian 'worthies' were buried here, including members of the Holt and Rathbone families.

St. John the Baptist is absolutely stunning. Where is it? It looks like you are on a hill a kilometer or so inland from the center of Liverpool, yes?
