That's when Bengal's fortunes went to sleep. The 80's & 90's are the worst two decades in Bengal's economy. As industries fled there were no such demands for too many office spaces leading to a lull in highrise office construction. In the 70's, Mumbai & Kolkata were neck-to-neck in highrise constructions. But During 80's & 90's, Mumbai, went on a spree of highrise construction, leaving Kolkata behind. Since the last decade, we are doing the catching up now.

In Mumbai, the trend is kind of similar. After Nariman Point and Cuffe Parade there was nothing much that was representative of Mumbai's real economic strength in India. The smart skyscrapers are a recent phenomenon and Mumbai is gaining ground in the skyscraper world. The other cities of India have also started building highrise buildings (in large numbers) pretty recently.

While both the Left Front and TMC in the last decade have encouraged highrise buildings, hopefully the politicans will build the promised financial hub in New Town. That could shake up the skyline of Kolkata. It would be disappointing to see a potential GIFT like project go down the drain. Wonder what is the status of the project after the foundation laying ceremony.

I hope the catching up happens soon. Any reasons other than the dark days of Jyoti Basu? Any FSI rules or regulations that are now removed?

I guess 7/8 years ago, The KMC changed the urban height act to facilitate building of talls (during Subrata Mukherjee's stint). Projects like Hiland park , South city, Silver spring & loads of others got cleared during that time.
And now the order of the day is to go vertical straight away, due to land 'issues' in Bengal.
Kolkata will be seeing massive highrise construction in coming years, that's for sure. Only thing to watch out for would be the corresponding infrastructure support needed in such highrise environment.

That's right. About 90% of the projects to take shape in 2012-13, will be pre 2011.
