English counties: from the charming to the rugged.

This thread will show photographs taken around various English counties, and will include not only rural scenes, but also pictures of county towns.

For such a small island - there is much variety. Most of the high & mountainous areas lie in the north of the country - in Cumbria, Northumberland, Yorkshire, Lancashire & Derbyshire.

Britain as a whole, including England, has some spectacular coastal stretches.

There is a wide variety of local stone, giving different counties their own particular flavour; that combined with many local vernaculars of architecture, makes for a thoroughly engaging place to visit.

The following pictures were taken in 'The Stroud Valleys' area of Gloucestershire, in south-west England. This county is known for its soft, warm and beautiful limestone - known as Cotswold Stone.

A wold is an area of upland plateau. What marks Stroud out from the rest of The Cotswolds, lies in the fact that this area marks the change from upland wold to sea-level countryside. It is an area comprised of five major valleys ( The Stroud Valleys) - each valley having its own atmosphere. There are multiple smaller valleys within each of the main valleys - creating a magical, characterful and thoroughly charming english landscape.

The town of Stroud itself. In the past it was a mill town, producing woollen cloth.

The Slad Valley was the home of author Laurie Lee ( Cider with Rosie). This was his local pub. This is, perhaps, the most beautiful and unspoilt valley.

Some images of West Yorkshire. Yorkshire is the largest english county, and is divided into North, West, South and East. It contains two national parks: The North York Moors and The Yorkshire Dales.

Haworth Moor - West Yorkshire. The home of the
Bronte sisters ( the parsonage they grew up in is pictured). You can certainly see where Emily got her inspiration for the novel, Wuthering Heights.
