MISC | Sustainable Transport Systems

Threat created to show the efforts that are being made in order to create "green" transportation systems in our cities and, of course, the systems themselves such as any kind of Integrated Public Transportation System

MOVIGAS, PUNTA ARENAS - CHILE

Punta Arenas is the southernmost city in Chile and one of the world's southernmost, located on the coast of the Strait of Magellan. It has a population of app. 120,000 people. Its the most important city in the Chilean Patagonia and it is characterized by its port area, its military bases, a duty free zone, and its extreme geography and weather.

On July, 2010, MOVIGAS was introduced. It consists of 61 eco-friendly buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). he vehicles have Cummins engines BGE-Plus 230-31 with Euro V and EPA 2010 emissions certification, which are highly efficient compared to other models of existing natural gas engines in the world market. The engines were built in North America and later sent to the King Long factory in Asia, where are being assembled.
These engines allow the use of renewable energy, in this case CNG from methane biogas, which allows them being extremely efficient as well as environmentally, are highly energy efficient fuels they can use 100% ecological fuels, which transforms the Movigas fleet in the greenest of South America.

PHILEAS PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Phileas is high quality public transport, developed by Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven (SRE), Netherlands, along with some other companies for the Cooperation Foundation Eindhoven Region (most prominently; APTS and Bombardier). It is an advanced guided bus intended to deliver tram-like public transport at a very low cost: the infrastructure is much cheaper, because of less maintenance, and there are no rails and overhead lines. The biggest feature of the bus is the recharging of the battery by means of electromagnetic induction; which means that the battery can be made much smaller, and thus less heavy and environmentally damaging.

Because it has a guided system, the bus doesn't need a bus driver. The route already is programmed in advance. But in 2008 the decision is made to have a bus driver, because of the Dutch Law, every vehicle on the road needs a driver.

In the last years this technology is sold to Istanbul, Douai (France), Korea, Haifa, Amsterdam, Helmond, and Cologne.

In the beginning there were a lot of problems, because this technology is to advance and many years ahead. This project is build by the hi-tech and innovations companies in Eindhoven and Fokker Aerospace. Now the Koreans are improving this hybride technology.

Electric rail transit running on power from water power and buses running on various green(-ish) power sources...
That's almost all of Stockholm's public transit (there's still diesel buses as well). Public transit is inherently "green".

NEW GREEN BUSES FOR LONDON

In 2012, London will host its third Olympics (1908 - 1948 & 2012). Motivated by this, the city will renew its famous "double-decker" for a modern and eco-firendly version of them.

Don't forget at least our buses are largely bioethanol or biodiesel as well as compressed natural gas. We've probably got one of the "best" non-electric bus fleets out there despite it still being polluting.

It does? More per person-kilometer? sounds very wasteful, not just pollution wise but also in fuel costs. Might be smarter to just run a lot of taxis in such cases...

Yeah, and thats one of the only thing i can say about Sweden, which is notably better than Denmark. I hate to bring in politics, but, over 10 years ago, our new government cancelled programs etc. bringing us from the top of windmills development and a lot other technologies, to nothing. We could have had what you guys have, I directly jealous about that!
