nabasa ko sa news after milenyo inutusan ni GMA ang MMDA at DPWH na alisin ang mga puno sa daan para hindi sagabal tuwing bagyo.

Stop killing EDSA trees, MMDA urged

By MICHAEL PUNONGBAYAN

The Philippine Star

The Philippine Bar Association (PBA) and the environmentalist group Mother Earth Foundation (MEF) are now asking the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to stop killing and uprooting trees along EDSA.

Both are denouncing the agency and its workers for allegedly decimating some 37 grown trees from White Plains Avenue to Boni Serrano Avenue fronting Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

Former president and current PBA committee on environment chairman Linda Jimeno said their group and the MEF are calling on the MMDA to immediately put an end to the killing of trees along EDSA.

According to her, global warming is already a problem and is "threatening our very existence as inhabitants of this planet."

"Pollution and the rising heat may be alleviated by the presence of these trees yet instead of planting thousands more, the MMDA is destroying them. The city is where we need them the most," Jimeno told The Star in an interview.

MEF chairman Sonia Mendoza said the MMDA is making it appear that the trees are being balled and not being killed outright.

"I took photos and I saw the pitiful state of the trees that were still standing," she said.

They've relocated the trees in Katipunan, so they should be able to do the same in EDSA...but that's not the point. Why would they cut down the trees in EDSA, that stretch of road already lacks trees...they should be planting more not cutting them down.

Also, what more if they start the construction of the MRT extension. That area will be a nightmare. They should start doing the proposed interchange in the area.

What I hate about EDSA is those overpasses and bypasses that seems to come out of nowhere unlike the one I used to know where cars can freely cruise the highway and enjoy the sun at the same time. EDSA's cluttered set up makes you feel stressful as you drive or even pass there.

I hate BF for blocking the EDSA/North Avenue Interchange Project. When Trinoma opens, his Uturn Slots will die

The ever chaotic EDSA... As much as possible I avoid passing through EDSA. I always take alternate routes. Driving along EDSA is so stressful and the pollution is unbearable in some areas. What happened to the Clean Air Act? A lot of the buses are smokebelchers.

Based on experience, EDSA is still the fastest route for me from Makati to QC. The alternate routes are likewise clogged including some parts of C5.

I agree. Except :

A. Southbound portion of GMA-Kamuning flyover where vehicles pile up due to exiting buses at Farmer's ibabaw Exit

B. Northbound Nepa-Q Mart area due to again, buses, blocking two to three lanes loading passengers

C. North Avenue U-turn

D. Congressional U-Turn. MMDA should put barriers on the outer three lanes to avoid being blocked or impeded by the U-turn lanes (inner 2 or 3) in order to have THRU TRAFFIC lanes

Well, it all depends on which part of QC you're going from Makati. I'm from Makati & Mandaluyong and my route varies according to my destination. Like I've said previously, as much as possible I avoid passing through EDSA but there are instances that EDSA is still the best way to go (just portions of it).
