Genting's Miami Casino Actually Would Be The World's Biggest

costar

Quote:
Digging through the archives of the exceedingly useful Crespogram Report, we struck gold. The giant Resorts World Miami, which Malaysian casino operator Genting has been itching to build at the Miami Herald Building and Omni sites, and which Genting has claimed to be downsizing, would actually be the world's largest casino if the original plans are actually built. Yep. The architect Arquitectonica, who had been muzzled by Genting when he originally proclaimed his design as 'world's largest', turned out to be totally right. With 849,650 square feet of gaming space split between the old Omni building and the blobby new one that's supposed to go on the Herald site, it trumps the current record holder, the Potawatomi Bingo Casino in Milwaukee by 69,650 square feet.

A major obstacle to Resorts World Miami has been removed: http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/12/1...o-vote-on.html

The demolition of the Miami Herald Building will allow Genting to begin construction of luxury residential towers at the site. The casino portion will remain on hold until Florida state laws have been changed by the legislature.

I Hope they finally put the casino in here.

Miami casino project will not be slowed by Genting’s Vegas development plans

Quote:
Genting Group’s plan to bring a mixed-use casino to 30 acres adjacent to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami, will not be affected by the firm’s recent $350 million purchase of 87 acres in Las Vegas, the South Florida Business Journal reported.

Resorts World Miami president Richard Goode responded to concerns that the Vegas project would siphon resources away from the Miami one, saying, “Not at all. We are moving forward with our Miami project as a standalone project.”

The recently scaled down casino project, which will operate under the Resorts World Miami name, includes convention space, hotel suites, residences, offices, restaurants and retail.

Genting Presents A Whole New Plan For The Miami Herald Site

Quote:
Genting has an entirely new plan for their Resorts World Miami megaproject at the Miami Herald Site (according to the Miami Herald) and, guess what, there isn't a gargantuan city-gobbling casino in site. In fact, it's all about parks (yes, parks), and view corridors, and a wide, luxurious baywalk, and even - gasp! - historic preservation. Well, sort of. The Miami Herald building may still be dunzo, but the art deco Boulevard Shops, with its high ceilings and rich architectural details will get a restoration as restaurant or nightclub space. That will begin this summer, and take about a year. Renovations and upgrades to the Hilton Hotel at the Omni, which Genting owns about a block to the north, have already begun, although there are no plans yet to do anything with the former Omni mall, which remains shuttered.

Genting plans to replace the Miami Herald with three condo towers and a luxury hotel, with parks to the north and south, and a wide baywalk linking to Museum Park. Parks will ease the transition to Museum park and provide a greenway to the Arsht Center. They're not trying to close any streets (the peoplemover is probably staying put too), and - this should thrill all the NIMBYs out there - there isn't a casino in sight.

Might as well move it to archives, then.

And another great project gone. I wonder which is next to die?

It's still quite alive. Genting is just doing some short-term yardwork around the site to generate some good will (and cash flow!) while they wait for the Florida legislature to approve the casino. Even if the casino isn't allowed, they will still develop the residential towers but they really want to see if they can get that casino which is vital to their current plans. If not, they may sell the site to another developer. But that would be a last resort.

No Longer Will News Lap at Miami Herald’s Door

Quote:
New York Times
March 24, 2013

MIAMI — One Herald Plaza rises like a boxy behemoth on Biscayne Bay, an industrial-looking rectangle that is not so easy to like but hard to ignore. A fitting trait, it turns out, for a daily newspaper.

The building, home of The Miami Herald, was built half a century ago on the waterfront just shy of downtown, in part to accommodate barges loaded down with newsprint for the presses. It was also intended to stand watch over Miami, a town forever on the cusp of another transformation.

For decades, news could literally be seen from the windows of The Herald: a dead body (or two) bobbed past in the bay, a man clambered up a radio tower sprinkling nonsensical notes like confetti, and Hurricane Andrew paid a memorable visit in 1992 but scarcely rattled the stormproof building. Down in the lobby, a prominent local politician committed suicide. A short sprint away, one man chewed off another man’s face.

The building and its most famous tenant stood for something. But soon, both will be gone. “This place said, ‘We’re watching,’ ” said Lisa Gibbs, a former business editor at The Herald who attended a farewell party last week, her tissues at the ready just in case. “It’s hard for me to think that something really hasn’t been lost. Plus, it’s got the best view in journalism,” she added.

Come June, the blocklong building, with its helipad, its ground-floor printing presses and a giant billboard blocking part of the bay view, will stand idle, a workmanlike shell without the workers. The building is expected to be demolished, flicked off the grid after failing to win landmark preservation status. In 2011, the McClatchy Company, which owns The Herald, sold the building for $236 million to the Genting Group, a Malaysian hotel and casino operator that will begin building a luxury resort and condominiums on the site. Genting’s plans for a giant casino failed to gain traction last year but will most likely resurface in 2014.

Herald employees will move into a renovated building in Doral, a small city on the west side of Miami-Dade County best known for its tangle of traffic, its proximity to the airport, affordable warehouses and an annual golf tournament. The building was the home of the military’s United States Southern Command.
