2030 8th Ave | 39 stories | Approved

Approved by the city. 400 feet, 39 floors, 380 apartment units and parking for 350 cars at 2030 Eighth*Ave. Developer has no immediate plans to begin building but surely approval is a move in the right direction.

The P-I story has an image that mentions a future city park on what looks like the Enterprise rent a car lot. Any idea when this might be built? Personally, seems like it would be more of a bum hangout than a park but maybe I'll be surprised.

If it were possible or of I knew how I'd embed the Weber Thomson video.

Maybe this is where Mayor McSchwinn intends to relocate the bums from Piss Park?

The video is here:

That P-I article is funny -- running with the more-woes-for-Cosmo-owners angle on the story, as though a building across the street and half a block away is the same thing as a building 10 feet away across an alley.

That said, there have been 10 or 12 30+ story residential towers proposed in the general Denny Triangle area in the last decade, with only a few actually built (Cosmo, Aspira, Metropolitan Tower if you count it, the various Olives if you count them), so I'm not going to hold my breath for this one.

Yah I get what you're saying but I really hope this one does get built. It would be visible from almost ever typical skyline view of the city and would stretch the skyline some and fill in the void between downtown and the Needle from the Alki view so I totally support it. Plus it's an obvious upgrade from what's currently on the site.

Awesome! I was wondering about this tower a while ago... Glad it got approved. It will be one of Seattle's nicest residential towers. I hope they will start construction soon.

I did a Denny Triangle walking tour about a month ago, just to document some of the blocks/buildings before they get ripped down. Here are a couple shots of that block.

I have to admit I'm hoping that some of the empty lots/parking lots on the other side of Westlake get developed first before this site since there's already a building there and it would really help the corridor to get a continual line of buildings.

Ben
The empty lots across westlake are all part of the Clise properties. Those won't get developed until they have a developer to do the whole group of them:

Seattle needs to stop with the pocket parks already. Put a building on that Enterprise spot and create real parks somewhere else, unless they are going to turn Westlake into a park street.

What's going to happen to the unique facade that's there now? This cool building in Vancouver either built a retro base or preserved one. Photo by Entheosfog - http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...=1#post5417267

I too have wondered about what they'll do with the current buildings facade. I think it's absurdly dated and wouldn't necessarily like to see it integrated into a new building facade but it could surely be repurposed and salvaged for something.

Generally speaking, I really dig terra cotta facades. I hope this is preserved, but I wouldn't go to the mat for it.

Regarding the gripes from the Cosmo: Ugh. You. Ought in a city. You were foolish to think you'd have a forever view. A good friend of mine worked as a real estate agent when the Cosmopolitan went on the market, and her firm made her write up some of the sales that were happening on the opening sales event. There was a whole lot of hype and hysteria, and the people who bought into it are now kvetching that their 'investments' aren't performing as expected. See also O8. I just don't have a lot of sympathy here. Call me cold.

It's cool but I worry about a 'Vancouverization' of Seattle with too many bland glass condos...

True, i fear we are on our way, with similar architecture styles.

I like it so I def don't fear it at all. I hope for variety moving forward but the design review board doesn't seem to leave much room for a whole lot of that. I guess I just see it as a positive because if they build it then it's still a step forward from a basically abandoned 2 story waste of space.

I do too. I like Vancouver's density, but not its architectural homogeneity. We should learn by Vancouver be mimicking its density, but part from Vancouver by encouraging architectural variety.

This I absolutely agree with too. Increased density and the concomitant urban vitality is far better than an underdeveloped, undernourished urban wasteland.

Absolutely. For now Seattle has excellent architectural diversity with wonderful historical layers that haven't been bulldozed in a mad rush to throw up a thousand banal glass boxes. But there comes a point where you guys could see that slippery slope ahead. My hope is that architects and developers will be sensitive to this issue having seen the soul-destroying monotony and homogeneity up north.

Last I heard, it was not going to be saved. Enough of the original terra cotta has been destroyed or damaged if I'm recalling. This was discussed a year or so ago.
