@ That One Guy. It looks great in the flesh. I was indifferent to it mid way through it's build but when you drive through the city it does look absolutely amazing.

New Mid-rise Surfaces In Birmingham

Surfacing in Birmingham is the long-awaited proposal for a new mid-rise office building at 2 Cornwall Street.

Originally the subject of a design competition that saw the likes of EPR Architects unsuccessfully enter, the design from the pens of Associated Architects will have approximately 24,433 square metres of space, of which 17,651 square metres or thereabouts will be leasible grade A office space.

Development has been enabled by the fact that the occupier of the existing building, KPMG, moved to 1 Snowhill which is barely 100 metres away. The developer is likely to pitch this project at a similar financial company if they can.

Aimed at large companies that have a substantial office requirement, the building will rise to 14 floors and have a height of 58 metres although earlier designs saw up to 20 floors mooted for a design competition held by Ballymore.

Embattled Irish developer Ballymore however had the site purchased by West Register, the property arm of troubled bank, RBS for £7 million in 2012 which undertook a feasibility study into whether the existing building should have been renovated or demolished.

With the proposal now winging its way through the planning system, redevelopment has clearly been chosen over refurbishment, although it goes without saying that construction is unlikely to begin before the new building has a substantial pre-let.

I like the midrises on the previous page, let's hope to soon see some highrises too though. I also like pretty much all the updates, city arena redevelopment, John Lewis and New street station. It's good to see things happening in Birmingham
