Riba Stirling Prize 2014: Birmingham Library is your favourite new building

Birmingham's new central library has won a BBC online vote to find Britain's favourite new building.

The library was one of six new buildings, including the London Shard and Liverpool's Everyman Theatre, shortlisted for this year's Riba Stirling Prize for architecture.

Readers of the BBC News Magazine were invited to choose their favourite of the six buildings listed for this year's prize. Approximately 90,000 votes were received.

The winner of the Riba Stirling Prize itself will be announced this evening by Riba at a ceremony in London.

A new works has commenced at this location known locally as SnowHill1. The grassed area is a viaduct, underneath the viaduct is a service road leading to an underground car park, witch is underneath the tram tracks. The offices to the top right of the first photo will be the headquarters of HS2.

The utility works have all been completed some time ago, this photo shows the junction of Bull and Corporation Streets.

They are proper going to town with this Tram network in Birmingham. Is it going to be larger than the Manchester Metrolink?

Not by a long shot unfortunately, there is funding currently in place to stretch the above tram line over to the other side of the city centre, with further funding for a second line heading over to the airport.
