Birmingham City University - Green Heart
City Center

Height: N/A | Floors: N/A | Client/Architects: Birmingham City University/Associated Architects.

Links: http://=http://www.associated-archit...of-birmingham/
  • Green Heart project at the University of Birmingham. The appointment involves the creation and delivery of 5.5 hectares of open space at the centre of the campus created from the demolition of the old campus library, replaced to the west of the site by the new £42m library designed by Associated Architects.

    The proposal will place public realm at the centre stage with all buildings accessed from it, reopening a 300m long central spine first conceived in the late 1920’s. Associated Architects will design the pavilions and update walkways to the east as well as overseeing the project delivery as lead consultant. Churchman Landscape Architects are working as part of a full multi-disciplinary team with ARUP & Couch Perry Wilkes to design the public space with their proposals focusing on the value of external space as common ground fully accessible by the academic community and re-establishing the University’s original vision through its grand axis.

    Construction is due to commence following the demolition of old library in September 2016.
  • Completion 2017

  • Current status: Proposed

2 Arena Central
City Center

Height: 62m | Floors: 12 | Client/Architects: HSBC / Make Architects

Links: http://arena-central.com/
  • In 2015, global bank HSBC announced that it would forward-purchase the full building as the head office of its UK ring-fenced bank serving personal and business customers.

    Occupying a prominent position overlooking Broad Street and Centenary Square and the new Arena Central public realm, the target BREEAM Excellent and LEED Gold office space will offer efficient floorplates of up to 21,903 sq ft over ground and ten upper floors.

    2 Arena Central has been designed as three interlocking ‘blocks’, 2 Arena Central features two offset balconies, providing outstanding views across the site’s new public realm and extensive landscaping and Centenary Square.

    The building’s distinctive woven cladding pattern creates a distinctive façade with the overlapping masonry ‘ribbons’ colour-matched to the Portland Stone of the adjacent buildings.

    With planning consent in place, the building is due for completion in 2017, with HSBC to take occupancy in 2018.

  • 1 Arena Central is a first choice location for either a single occupier seeking a prominent HQ location or multiple tenants, with flexible and easily sub-divisible floorplates supporting the delivery of a number of office layouts.

    Alongside its 135,000 sq ft of Grade A offices – with typical floorplates of 21,000 sq ft – 1 Arena Central offers 5,000 sq ft of high quality retail space with an inset terrace facing out towards Centenary Square.

    The upper floors have been designed to accommodate a variety of occupier requirements, with a flexible layout arranged around a central lift core and two perimeter stair cores, with a balcony and terrace on the top floor.

    The exterior of 1 Arena Central has been designed to create an impactful and timeless facade with alternating glazed and fully opaque panels creating a tessellated, chequerboard effect around the building.

    The basement provides 68 car parking spaces, alongside 54 secure cycle spaces with lockers and showers. Funding is currently being sought to develop 1 Arena Central on a speculative basis.

Some very exciting things happening in Birmingham! I absolutely love Beorma Quarter tower and 103 Colmore row. They're pure class and I wish they were taller and hit the 150m mark. But I'm sure Birmingham will get there sooner than later!

I also can't wait to see Paradise circus masterplan come into fruition! That will be a game changer for the city centre for sure.

When is it a good time to visit Birmingham? Will tram works finish anytime soon?

It'll take time but who knows. Beorma grew in height. Maybe within the next 18 months we may see something hitting that height.

Good time to visit? Well any time but Christmas market coming up soon. Voted one of the top 10 in Europe. Normally a very fun and festive time.

Centenary Square Redevelopment
City Center

Height: N/A | Floors: N/A| Client/Architects: BCC / GRAEME MASSIE ARCHITECTS.

Links: https://www.architecture.com/RIBA/Co...rrevealed.aspx
  • The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, launched by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Landscape Institute on behalf of Birmingham City Council, attracted nearly 200 entries from architects and designers around the world, all vying to make their mark on the city by redesigning Centenary Square.

    Graeme Massie Architects’ winning design was selected from a shortlist of just five by a panel of judges, which included Birmingham City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Ian Ward.

    The lighting columns, which will provide a unique and iconic image for Birmingham;

    The fact the scheme is multi-dimensional, incorporating trees, seating and water with a ceiling of lights which can be appreciated not just from the square but from the terrace of the library and the higher floors of surrounding buildings too;

    The ‘timeless simplicity’ of the design which also offers the flexibility for the location to be used for a wide range of events in the long-term;

    The design fits in well with the existing and planned developments in the area;

    The design complements the history of the square as well as providing an iconic design for the future.

Birmingham's Most Expensive Apartment Sold
City Center

Value £1.8m

Links: http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/busi...-sold-10318452
  • The most expensive city centre apartment ever has been sold in Birmingham.

    A penthouse flat in the former Debenhams warehouse in Holloway Head, better known as Concord House, has been bought for £1.8 million - believed to be only the second time an apartment has topped the £1 million mark.

    The resident of the "ultimate bachelor pad" can at least count one pop star among his new neighbours, namely The Vamps' bass player Connor Ball.

    Mr Dodd said: "What a nice guy - he just turned up with a skateboard under his arm and his rucksack on his back. We showed him round a flat and he said 'I'll take it, thanks'."

    The £1.8 million flat, which is around 4,200 sq ft, has four terraces altogether including one long enough to run sprints up and down.
