New HSBC Headquarters

Banking jobs moving from London to Birmingham. 2,500 people will be working here in 12 months time. Great news for the economy of Greater Birmingham.

EASTSIDE

The district to the East of Birmingham City Centre is undergoing a massive transformation, with millions of square metres of office, retail, apartment & student accommodation either under construction or in the pipeline. Underpinning this expansion is the arrival of HS2 in the city - the UK's new high speed train network, with trains between Birmingham & London, Birmingham & Leeds and Birmingham & Manchester, travelling up to 400 kph (250mph).

Back to Exchange Square and a few shots of the skyline around that area.

Exchange Square being a phase 1 development consisting of three new builds reaching 8, 15 and 27 floors. Phase 2 will top out at 46 stories.

PerpetualBirmingham, thank you for the updates, the competition between Brum and Manc is heating up nicely.
In the third pic of the above update, are there any plans to get rid of the brown tower and multi-storey next door? Surely with all the Eastside efforts they can't last long surely?

Winter comes to town

Most of central Birmingham is hidden by the office buildings in Edgbaston, but a couple of developments are visible in the distance.

What. You mean our mini New York United Nations building??

There are one or two buildings in Birmingham I'd like to meet the 'wrecking ball' before the McLaren Building is dealt with!!!

It's the Martineau Galleries site, Hammerson currently own it.

ARENA CENTRAL

Currently U/C is in the foreground - 1 Centenery Square, new National HQ for HSBC UK. Currently scheduled to finish late-2018. At the back is the Holiday Inn Express which opened early this year. 3 Arena Central (the central plot behind the old Municipal Bank) is due to start and is currently undergoing prep work after gaining planning permission late last year. 3 more builds will cram into the site.

The area is also going through extensive tram works with tracks soon to be fitted which will see the line extended from Grand Central, through the golden mile of Broad Street and towards Edgbaston.

Centenery Square is also going through a makeover.

Birmingham just continues to race ahead.

No Sandblast, meant the littler building next to the multi-storey, the tower isn't that bad tbf, looks like the Exchange development will hide that vista from the new Curzon St.
Thank you Al for the heads up regarding the Martineau Galleries, so many projects!

That Holiday Inn is just terrible imo. How in 2015/2016 did any architect think that would be a good clad? Looks like it was created by Minecraft in 1997.

Hammerson are keeping their plans quiet at the mo'. I don't expect them to sell the land, but we will see.

It's the next BIG development in my eyes, right on the doorstep to HS2

Don't worry, it will be hidden behind a whole host of new buildings at the Arena Central site!!

It is a shockingly designed building and not in keeping with the area at all. Saying that, the whole area is a complete mix of crap design and top quality design. Some times you don’t know if you’re turning into a world class city or going back to the 60’s.

Only in Birmingham eh!

Hopefully that and Crowne Plaza don't last beyond the 2040s.
