LOP | Lombok International Airport

Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok) (IATA: LOP, ICAO: WADL) is a new airport in the final stages of construction on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. Currently, Lombok is serviced by Selaparang Airport (IATA: AMI, ICAO: WADA), the existing airport situated at Ampenan on the West coast of Lombok near the capital of Mataram.

The completion of the airport project and necessary complementary infrastructure such as a highway connecting to the city of Mataram has delayed inauguration of the new airport several times. At the close of 2010 the facility was yet to be issued the required operational certifications and tensions persisted with local landowners. In early January 2011 the project was thought to be suffering from an estimated US$12 million deficit in the funding required for project completion. In August 2011 the operational and technical director of state-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura-I, Haryoso Catur Prayitno suggested that the airport will be fully operational on 1 October, 2011 after airport simulations which will be conducted on 5-8 September, 2011. Such announcements have been made several times in the last couple of years only for the proposed date to pass with work still incomplete and the facility unable to open. When the airport does finally open it will accommodate widebody high capacity Airbus 330, Boeing 767 airliners as well as smaller aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus 319-320 aircraft already serving Lombok.

On 28 July 2011 the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (Indonesia), published an announcement stating that from 1 October 2011 at 02:00hrs all incoming and outgoing aircraft shall use the new Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok),(IATA: ---, ICAO: WADL). The effective date for the announcement was 22 September 2011. All operations at Lomboks existing Selaparang Airport (IATA: AMI, ICAO: WADA) are planned to cease on 31 October 2011 at 10:00 hrs.

Lombok International Airport ready for use on Oct. 1The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 09/16/2011 6:05 PM
A | A | A | West Nusa Tenggara Governor Zainal Majdi has confirmed that the new Lombok International Airport in Tanah Awu, Central Lombok will start operating on October 1.

“Landing and take off will commence at the new airport starting October 1,” he said on Friday as reported by tempointeraktif.com.

He added that with the operation of the new airport, the Selaparang International Airport in Matara would be shut down as of September 30.

However, he said that several parts of the new airport were still under construction, such as the gardens and roads, but mandatory flight facilities were complete.
The Air Transportation Directorate General under the Transportation Ministry has trialed the new international airport, including the navigational system and the instrument landing system (ILS).

The airport took six years to build, and consumed Rp 945 billion (US$107.7 million) of the state budget.

Lombok seeks added air links with new airport
Mimi Hudoyo, Jakarta, September 26, 2011

WITH the official opening of the Lombok International Airport (LIA) on October 1, the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial government is hoping to establish direct air links between Lombok and Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong and the Middle East.

NTB regional tourist office head, Lalu Gita Aryadi, said: “We would like to get direct services here. Malaysia is a potential market for us, but air connection has been an issue. Arrivals from Australia have been growing in the last couple of years, but we have been relying on Bali so far. Hong Kong is a hub for us to reach the China, Korea and Japan markets.”

He added that the regional government had plans to do roadshows and promotions in Indonesia and overseas to create awareness for the new airport and destination.

When asked why they were only making an effort recently, Lalu said: “We have been concentrating on pushing the airport authority to open LIA, (as the opening had already been postponed a few times). Once the airport runs, we will start promoting to airlines.”

Lombok's current airport, Selaparang, will cease operations on September 30. On October 1, all airlines will depart and land at LIA, located in Central Lombok, 40km from Selaparang, according to Lalu, quoting from the announcement made by the Angkasa Pura I airport authority.

Indonesia AirAsia (IAA) said that the airline had plans on flying the Kuala Lumpur-Lombok route four times a week next year.

IAA marketing and distribution director, Widijastoro Nugroho, said: “We have (always) been interested and planned to fly to Lombok as early as two years ago, but the airport opening was postponed and we have deployed the aircraft initially assigned for Lombok to other destinations.”

He added: “Now we need to plan again and wait for the availability of aircraft, probably next year.”

The airlines that currently fly to Lombok are Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batavia Air, Merpati Nusantara Airlines, Wings Air, Travira Air, and SilkAir.

Mataram's Lombok Int'l Airport Starts Operating
Jimmy Hitipeuw | Sabtu, 1 Oktober 2011 | 18:07 WIB

MATARAM, KOMPAS.com - Mataram’s new Lombok International Airport, located about 40 kilometers south of West Nusa Tenggara’s provincial capital, started operating on Saturday.

A Garuda Indonesia Airways Boeing 737-800 JR was the first commercial aircraft that landed at the new facility at 10.08 local time on Saturday. The plane landed smoothly on the airport’s runway, witnessed by thousands of people lining the airport’s perimeters.

The plane was carrying 108 people consisting of a group of West Nusa Tenggara government officials including Governor TGH M Zainul Majdi, councilors, as well as ordinary West Nusatenggara residents. They had been previously transported to Jakarta in order to make the flight to Lombok International Airport on the day of its opening.

The arriving people were greeted with a traditional ceremony to mark the new airport’s official opening. In his speech on the occasion Governor Zainul Majdi said, with the opening of the Lombok international airport, the local people’s long wait had finally ended.

"This is the beginning of progress as well as proof that West Nusa Tenggara also can advance and if all parties work hard then nothing is impossible," he added.

Meanwhile, Central Lombok Dsitrict Chief Suhaili FT appreciated all those who had supported the development of the international airport. Suhaili expressed his commitment to ensure the security and stability of the airport’s operations.

"No more doubts about safety. We can assure you. It is a testament that all parties in theis region want progress. Hopefully it is beneficial for all of us," he said.

Lombok International Airport has an area of 551 hectares and a runway of 2750 meters x 40 meters making it able to accommodate Airbus 330s or Boeing 767s. The airport’s passenger handling capacity is three million a year and it has a parking area of 17,500 square meters.

Apparently it was only for temporary...
The Airport Authority were giving free pass to local people to visit the airport for two days only...

This is how it's looks like today...

Jetstar sets off for Lombok

Quote:
The first direct connection between Australia and the Indonesia island of Lombok today took to the skies, with Jetstar becoming the first carrier to service the route.
Its inaugural Perth-Lombok service took off this morning with more than 150 passengers on board the Airbus A320 aircraft.

Speaking to a media delegation at Perth Airport this morning, head of commercial Nigel Fanning described the launch of services as “history in the making”.
“It marks our fifth destination in Indonesia taking us to 66 in total,” he said.

Chief executive David Hall anticipated that Lombok would soon become one of the most popular destinations on its network, with Indonesia the second most popular overseas holiday destination for Australians.
