Some long distance coaches in Mexico.

Most are locally built MAN, Scania, Mercedes Benz and Volvos. Americans are represented by MCI and Eagle. Locally built OISA and DINA are also present.

Most of these are scheduled intercity lines.

A MAN operated by ETN in Mexico City.

ETN also operates Volvos.

This SETRA is operated from northern border cities into the USA.

An Estrella Roja (from Puebla, in south central Mexico) M.Benz Multego.

This MAN Irizar is from Mexico City and operated by Flecha Roja.

ADO is the main line for Gulf ans southern Mexico services. They operarte Volvos.

Brazilian coaches are also present like this Marcopolo from TAP. They serve destinations in southeast Mexico.

More to come!!!!!

In the next post I´ll show medium and short distance buses as well as some oldies.

These are medium and short distance buses, mainly used in suburban and secondary multistop services. Some are former first class coaches.

Most brands are Mercedes Benz, DINA, OISA, MASA, Volvo and MCI.

Here are some examples from the Mexican forum:

A Brazilian M. Benz Torino in service between small towns in the Veracruz-Oaxaca border. This is sothern Mexico.

Another Torino fron Terranova. Services suburban Cordoba in Veracruz.

This is a Terranova Marcopolo also linking Cordoba with neighbouring towns. Another variation of that line colours.

This DINA from mid 90´s vintage was still in regular service in Sinaloa in 2010. It is a secondary line.

A 1990 vintage Eagle still working in Sinaloa.

This DINA is still in service in neigbouring Nayarit state. These coaches were the last entirely Mexican desgined to be sold by that manufacturer. Aterwards they partenered with Busscar from Brazil.

This museum piece was still in service in Escuinapa, serving small communities. It is a late 60´s DINA Flexble. I love the sound of their old but tough Detroit Diesel two-stroke engines!!!

Anyway, relics are confined to small and remote cities. Most medium distance routes arre served by modern buses like this Volvo from AU in southern Mexico.

Here are more oldies. They are used in areas with bad roads and can stand pothole punishment. Forget about confort...

This is a 70´s Somex, a long disappeared Mexican brand bought by Volvo.

However these small lines, from Mazatlan, are replacing them with new Mercedes Benz for even those services.

Finally, this a Mexican made OISA Jaguar. It serves smaller destinations for Omnibus de Mexico, a big company.

Here are some city buses from Mexico.

Few cities have a centralized public network like Europe. Most have a mix of public and private services in many cases without designated stops and frequencies.

Mexico has still a lot of homework to do, regarding urban bus services but some lines have very good service.

Anyway here are some pictures from the MExican forums..

These are Mercedes Benz Torino. From Monterrey.

Monterrey´s BRT.

This is in southern Mexico. Villahermosa TRANSbus. It is a modern integrated network unlike other cities.

From northern Mexico: Hermosillo SUBA. Equipment is from Volkswagen and local brand DINA. Bodies are also locally designed.

A Volkswagen Midibus. From Tuxtla Gutierrez in the south, close to Guatemala.

Mexico City: This is the METROBUS, our local BRT network. Equipment are Volvo, Scania and Mercedes Benz artic buses. Some low entry to be taken in 2012 for new Line 4.

BRT service from Tampico. It is called URBAN.

These Mercedes Benz Torino are from Tampico´s regular network. The crab is a "jaiba", considered a symbol for this beautiful coastal city, near the Gulf of Mexico.

From the same city; a Masteroad low floor bus. These are built by a local firm.

Here is a Navistar school bus type, used for urban service in Acapulco, outside the famous touristic areas. Have been replaced by less colorful, but more efficient buses. Many of these were also decorated inside, with neon lights and noisy sound systems...

For a very strange reason, this Mercedes Benz was destined and painted in Mexico City´s colours, but instead it was caught giving service in Poza Rica, another coastal city in the Gulf. It has since been repainted.

In northwest Mexico: a Chinese made Yutong. It is in service in Tijuana.

Some more from Tijuana. Mercedes Benz minibus

From ECORUTA service in Tijuana. Sadly their network is still limited to some areas. Besides air conditioning, they have also Wifi and information screens.

Another low-floor Volvo from Cancun.

Sadly, in many cities some relics or simply crude and/or inadequate vehicles are still in service.

An 80´s vintage FAMSA-International in¨Córdoba.

This is an early 80´s DINA with an equally ancient CAPRE body....

But even smaller cities have now modern transport, like this Renault Mascot in Tlaxcala.

This MAN Irizar is from Queretaro for its newly formed Transmetro service.

Sadly, smaller cities in the US don't get particularly good bus service. Here's one of the buses from the city I live in. They've since been repainted white&blue, but they're the same buses.

They don't run past 7pm, nor at all on weekends

It is because Volkswagen Truck and Bus is a Latin American venture only. Some years ago there was a MAN-Volkswagen LKW sold in Europe..

The venture went on in Europe from 1977 to 1993 but only with light vehicles based in the LT series. However the series were developed in Brazil to larger vehicles, and sold all over Latin America.

Since MAN was bought by VAG, the plant in Mexico builds Volkswagen Worker series, Volksbus series of minibuses, heavy transit buses, and MAN TGA lorries. The new VW Constellation series is also imported from Brazil.

This is a medium size Volksbus with a Mexican BECCAR body.

The CMA Flecha Azul, made by Viação Cometa. This model was made from the 1970's to the year 2000, always using Scania chassis and the body bilt in Duraluminium.
This is the brazilian bus i like the most.
