Foreign media on Bhupen da

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 7: Two respected newspapers of the United State and the United Kingdom –– The Washington Post and The Guardian –– have carried the news of Bhupen Hazarika’s demise in their publications. Referring to the balladeer as one of the most important cultural figures of North-east India, the UK-based Guardian in its report, said that late Bhupen Hazarika used music, cinema and the written word to stitch political ideology and ancient traditions into the fabric of popular culture.

Meanwhile, in its long obituary, The Daily Star of Bangladesh remembers his fondly and said that Hazarika shared a special relationship with Bangladesh. “The Bard of Brahmaputra, he penned a song on the liberation war, Joi Joi Naba Jata Bangladesh (hail the newborn Bangladesh), which is a stirring marching tune and which was on every Bengali’s lips during the war days and became a virtual anthem at the time,” the report stated.

---------------------------------
This shows the legend's popularity... With his demise the state and the entire NE at large has lost representation...
Hope to see someone stand up to fill up the vacuum by walking on his path...
I understand it is never possible to replace someone as great and dearest as Bhupenda.. but we have to have people who can represent and stand tall among others at the inter/national level representing this part of the world, which he did effectively and tirelessly for so many years..

May his soul rest in eternal peace.....God Bless his soul...

Sarabananda writes to PM for Bhupen monument

Staff Reporter

DIBRUGARH, Nov 7: A monument must be built by the Centre at the spot where Dr Bhupen Hazarika is laid to final rest, urged former MP, Sarbananda Sonowal, in a letter to the Prime Minister on Sunday.

Writing to Dr Manmohan Singh, Sonowal further stated that the national monument should be appropriately conceptualized, executed and preferably maintained directly by the Central Government. He mentioned that the Prime Minister was being approached since he represented the state in the Rajya Sabha.

Sonowal considered that such a step as important so that future generations of the country draw inspiration from such a memorial. He felt that the singer’s death had left a void in Indian society that can never be filled.

Meanwhile, messages of condolence on the death of Dr Hazarika continue to pour in. President of the Dibrugarh town unit of Sadou Asom Bihuwa Bihuati Bihu Bisheshaygya aru Bihu Bisharakar Kendriya Samity , Muktinath Borgohain said that the singer’s creations will remain in the hearts of the Assamese people.

Hazarika residence to be preserved - Rahul gandhi visits nizarapar, offers condolences

Nov. 9: Bhupen Hazarika’s Nizarapar residence will be preserved, just like those of Shelly and Shakespeare.

“The Bhupen Hazarika Trust will look after Bhupenda’s residence at Nizarapar. It will be preserved like the homes of Shelly or Shakespeare in England. His admirers and fans can come here to have a look at where he lived,” said sister-in-law Manisha Hazarika.

The residence was today visited by many VIPs, including Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, chief minister Tarun Gogoi and others.

Rahul, clad in a white kurta, was returning from Nagaland and dropped in almost unannounced, hours after mutterings of complaints that no Congress leader had come for the funeral.

Entering the premises, he headed towards the maestro’s photograph and paid his tribute with folded hands.

He then greeted the family members and spoke to his son Tez for about 30 minutes, looking relaxed as he sat with them.

“We talked of usual things. I asked him about his education and association with the Northeast. He also asked abo-ut my father. We even discus-sed Buddhism and about my interest in Buddhist monasteries. It was very nice,” Tez said.

Tez, who described his feelings like a New Yorker yesterday, was a transformed man. From a person who reacted to the massive homage that his father received as being “blown away”, today he bowed to the crowd like an Indian, or rather, like an Assamese stee-ped in tradition and culture. “I learnt the bowing in Buddhism. But the respect that people showered on my family today was magical,” said Tez.

A turnout of 50,000 to 60,000 people at a cremation is, after all, not commonplace.

During his visit to Nizarapar, Rahul Gandhi did not say anything on the issue of Hazarika being honoured with Bharat Ratna, a long-pending demand of the state’s people.

Kalpana Lajmi later told reporters how awards were being “politicised”.

“Bhupen Hazarika being honoured with Bharat Ratna has been discussed earlier. It’s sad how great artistes are deprived of such honours. These awards are now politicised,” said Lajmi.

The residence was a picture of gloom. In the afterno-on, the family members, after returning from Jalukbari, buried the asthi (mortal rema-ins) near the bokul tree in the front yard.

Hazarika’s sister Sudakshina, who broke down at the crematorium ground, was rushed back to Nizarapar on a stretcher.

The ashes from the cremation ground were brought in 12 containers wrapped in red cloth and kept carefully at the sotal.

“Many have requested us for the ashes from his cremation. Some also gave us jars at home to preserve the ashes for them,” said Samar Hazarika, Hazarika’s brother.

The ashes will be distributed to places like Tezpur, Koliabor, Arunachal Pradesh and others.

Over a crore collected as fine from traffic rule violators

GUWAHATI: The state transport department has collected a record amount of revenue from Kamrup metro district in the last seven months.

District transport officer, enforcement, Kamrup (Metro), JC Handique said the transport department collected Rs 1,11,14,857 as fine from traffic rule violators between April 1 to October 31.

The transport officials registered 5,122 cases of traffic rule violation during the period and settled 4,133 cases.

Handique added that compared to the same period in 2010-11, this year, over 29 lakh penalty has been collected.

"The aim of the transport department is not only to raise the revenue. The transport department is laying emphasis on ensuring security of the travelers and trying to detect vehicles with overload which is the cause frequent accidents", he said.

The drives were conducted at national highways and other city roads.

Handique informed that the transport department has recently warned the commercial vehicle owners not carry passengers above limit in the trackers and diesel auto vans.

He added that vehicles have been served notice that if found guilty of violating same rules, the registration of the vehicles would be cancelled.

Over 100 trekkers and 35 diesel autos has been seized by the transport department for violating traffic rules. Handique said the awareness level of vehicle owners to abide by the traffic rules is still a cause of concern in the city as the number of registered cases has not come down as expected. The number of registered cases last year was 5,160 during the same period.

Revise urban plan, govt told A STAFF REPORTER

Nov. 10: The city is yet to begin the process of revising its development plan, as instructed by the Union ministry of urban development under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The ministry has reminded the urban development department recently to begin revising the development plan, so that the changing physical, social, economic and policy environments are taken into account.

The city development plan requires regular upgrade, keeping in view developments in the field of infrastructure and governance. “The process of revising the city development plan has still not started,” a source in Guwahati Municipal Corporation said.

The ministry said the stress should be on the planning process rather than on the plan document.

The process should be comprehensive and focus on many aspects.

The first city development plan, which was prepared and approved in 2006, was done without the involvement of municipal councillors.

The National Institute of Urban Affairs, which had appraised the plan, noted this.

The ministry said it would reimburse the cost of preparing the revised city development plan, subject to the allocation of funds available under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The ministry has suggested that the process should be co-ordinated by the constitution of an empowered committee at the city level.

The committee, headed by the mayor or the chairperson of GMC, will provide all the strategic guidance and steer the preparation and implementation of a fresh development plan.

There should be a technical committee, which shall work in co-ordination with the stakeholders.

The source said a city assessment should be done to provide a baseline to assess the demand-supply gap, past trends to influence projections for the future, a basis for measurement of achievements of the plan and a reality check for vision.

The existing infrastructure and basic services should be assessed in terms of availability, efficiency, sustainability and satisfaction level of users.

Parameters that need to be assessed under infrastructure services are water supply, sewerage, solid waste management, housing and transportation.

On the basis of city assessment, a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity and threat) analysis should be prepared.

The revised city development plan should also comprise a financial plan, which shall incorporate all measures and initiatives taken by all institutions engaged in service delivery, to improve the fiscal and service-level position in the next five years.

48 brands for city shoppers

Guwahati, Nov. 10: The city is fast turning into a hot destination for international luxury brands, services and assets.

This fact was highlighted in the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-AT Kearney Indian Luxury Review report released last month. While focussing on car brands with more than 50 per cent of their dealerships outside the metros, it said Guwahati was a potential destination of luxury products as well as services and assets.

Multinational automobile giant Volkswagen, which debuted in the city this year, said it was already selling more than 40 cars a month — a sales figure which is a pointer to the fact that the city is growing in terms of demand and a taste for luxury.

The report also said the luxury market in India was gaining increasing visibility with each passing year. “While the ‘buzz’ generated by this sector is disproportionately high compared to the size of the market today, it does indicate that most global luxury brands recognise the potential of India’s luxury market. Giv-en the high growth rate of the Indian market compared to mature economies, it is only likely that interest in the Indian market will increase in the days ahead,” it added.

The country’s luxury market witnessed a robust growth of 20 per cent in the past year and is estimated to have reached $5.75 billion in 2010.

Another pointer to its growing desirability of the city in particular and the region as a whole is upcoming five star hotels to be set up by hospitality majors like Taj, Hyatt and Marriot groups in different parts of Assam and Meghayala.

In keeping with this trend, Sohum Shoppe Limited, a leading multi-brand retail chain of the region, is opening the Sohum Emporio — a multi-brand mall. The mall, which is coming up on the GS Road, is scheduled to open for customers on November 19 and will have company outlets of 48 top national and international brands under on roof.

Sohum Shoppe CEO Siddarth Jalan said the company had made a proper survey of brands to shortlist the hot-selling ones. “The best part was that we were recognised. When we approached people to open outlets here, they knew of Sohum, which was a plus point,” he said.

“The Northeast is a fashion-oriented market and dressing sense of the people here is better than many others. This gives us hope that there is market for luxury products. We are bringing in products which would sell in the Guwahati market,” Jalan said.

He said the company was looking at Rs 10-crore turnover in the first year and there were plans to enter Shillong later.

Some of the brands that would be on display are Body Shop, Tommy Hilfiger, FCUK, Calvin Klein, Swarovski, Veromoda, Jack and Jones, Esprit, Gant, Mothercare and Nike.

A senior official of Jack and Jones India said Guwahati was a place where brands could come up in a big way. “If we do not have brands in the market, how do we know the strengths of the market,” the official said, adding that the Sohum Emporio outlet would be the company’s first in Guwahati.

“We also look at the brand mix where we set up our outlets,” the official added.

Amit Dhanjani, marketing head of GAS India, a premium jeans brand, hoped it would be a good debut in Guwahati.

Tommy Hilfiger, a market leader in the highly competitive premium imported designer apparel sector, also has a showroom in the mall.

Tommy Hilfiger India CEO Shailesh Chaturvedi said they were excited to make their debut in Guwahati and hoped to do well. “A lot of customers from Guwahati are buying our brand in other places and when it is available in Guwahati, the response should be good. We have been doing extremely well in non-metro cities,” he said.

The apparel brand was launched in India in 2004.
